(More customer reviews)I bought this item about a month ago and find it very useful.I live in Los Angeles so a GPS system is very helpful finding my way around.I agree with another reviewer that the load time is a bit slow, but nothing that would cause me to have an issue with it.The maps themselves are Navtech maps and are used in the majority of preinstalled GPS systems of major car makers. There are several options with the 'advanced' mode and the basic mode offers simple navigation tools. I would recommend this to anyone considering a GPS system who doesn't want to spend over $500.

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters Review

(More customer reviews)I received this unit for Christmas primarily for my bike, but once I purchase the car mount adapter it will be used in the car as well.

This is an excellent unit, to say the least.One reviewer mentioned that it's too difficult to turn the unit on- I say "hogwash".The pushbutton is stiff, yes, but that's done to keep the unit from turning on accidentally while in your jacket pocket or carry bag (and with a touch screen, you can well imagine how much mischief one could accidentally create if it turned on without your knowledge).Ditto with the Scala Rider headset- you don't want the thing accidentally turning on, running the battery down, do you?

Another reviewer mentioned that it doesn't have a "speedometer" or trip meter function- it most certainly does have a speedometer, and what I assume is the "trip meter"- but since TomTom set the unit from the factory to eliminate as much extraneous information as possible, you have to activate it in the menus.Once that has been activated, it'll be there until you turn that feature off.In fact, there are a great number of features you can turn on and off in the menus.

I found the documentation to be adequate, and to the point.The printed documentation is to get you up to speed until you charge the units and turn them on- it's easy sailing after that.The unit is very easy to use, and it has tutorials right on the unit, so in my opinion further paper documentation is rather redundant- actually, I think it's pretty smart on TomTom's part to include tutorials on the unit itself rather than supply a printed book- that way I don't have to carry around the book, as all of the information is already on the unit!They really don't say much about the bike power cable, but I can certainly understand why- it's not possible to provide information about every bike out there, and if you aren't familiar enough with your bike, or can't figure out how to install it, it's probably best to get someone who is (like your bike dealer) to do the installation.

I've got a Motorolla Razr phone, and the TomTom easily hooked up to my phone via Bluetooth, and it painlessly downloaded all of my phone numbers I have stored on the phone (thank you for providing this helpful feature!).

I do wish that it gave the street name when it gives you instructions to turn, but I soon got used to how it works- not only does the display give you very clear instructions on where to turn, it also gives you the street name.Once you get used to it, it's easy.But I would like the option of hearing the street name (my PDA does, but the map display isn't as easy to see as the TomTom).While playing with the unit as my father-in-law drove the car, I discovered one potential issue with having the street name spoken to you- what happens when the street name is changed, but your maps haven't been updated?If you rely on the spoken street name, you might miss it- it's best to take a glance at the screen to make sure you're taking the correct turn (I found one such road- the name has recently been changed, but the map showed the old name instead).Still, I'd prefer to have it spoken, and visually double-check the map.

Overall, I give the TomTom an A-.TomTom, if you're reading this, I'll give you an A+ if you guys update the software so that it'll give you the street name by voice- then you'll have the best bike GPS available!However, I'd still buy the unit as is.It would just increase the functionality by including this feature.

Rand McNally 528881469 7-inch Intelliroute TND 700 Truck GPS Review

(More customer reviews)Well as one of the first to get this I figured I'd give a review. The screen is great. It's pretty clear and seems tough enough not to need a screen protector. The plastic that was on the screen out-of-the-box left glue residue which was a pain to remove. It comes with a stylus that works great but navigating around with your finger is easy and works just fine. I usually just have to tap it with the back of my finger. When you get it, charge it for a few hours before you use it at all. I'm not sure if my over sized good laptop even was charging it. So use the wall outlet. It comes with nice cables for both wall outlet and 12 volt, as well as a good usb cable. The supplied mount is excellent and easy to use. No tools required. The screen part snaps into another flat part on the mount and you have to make sure it's clicked in all the way or it will drop out.. AFTER IT IS FULLY CHARGED, plug it in the pc and get your first free lifetime update. The software loads fine and tries to start up each time you use the computer. I stopped that and made a shortcut to start it myself. There are no options I saw to disable it from auto starting... I used ccleaner/tools/startup to disable it. The program DOES use a lot of resources when running, but you only need to update once in a while.
My first drive with it was Tampa to El Paso. It saves my height, width, weight and hazmat class. I was hauling hazmat. It gave a killer route that would have saved time but I had to alter it for the company fuel stops and routes. It tells you everything you need to know. Where travel centers are and what they have, scales and weigh stations and much more which can all be symbols on the map if you wish. YAY now i don't have to buy an iphone. Some stuff in the manual says parts are for future use so I'm guessing the updates are going to give even more. You can manually adjust the zoom. The automatic screen zooming works great. One time it was dark and cloudy with a cool looking sky and I looked at my screen and saw the exact same thing as I approached a ramp. You can save all your addresses and stops and put notes in them for phone numbers and gate codes etc. Then make groups (folders) for your addresses so you can find them even quicker. I sat there for 9 hours like a jerk and typed in all the company terminals and drop yards. It was fun. I'm saving each new stop now with notes too.
Once the GPS kinda got confused and mixed up my current rout with a completed one. It may have been my fault but I don't think so. I just restarted it real quick and it worked fine again.
I also used it in my car. It's easy to switch between truck and car mode. I drive a medium large car and the 7 inch unit was a bit to big and did obstruct my view a little.
The voice is fine and easy to adjust. The thing is nice and it works good. The traffic and road updates for life. I don't have to use internet or buy a netbook (with gps) and software... I'm happy I got it. I don't get lost anymore.
I like the TND 700. I'd just like to tell Rand Mcnally that since we spent as much on this as for a laptop, please make this the best and keep updates and innovations coming to us for the next few years at least. I'm kinda expecting you to make the software on the unit and on the TND DOCK (pc software) a bit better. I'd also like to be able to set up routes INTERSTATE to INTERSTATE to INTERSTATE to FINAL in order to comply with company route solutions. Sometimes we can't take all those better routes the unit suggests. You can make this worthy of five stars with just a little more effort.Well, I gotta haul A$$. Joe

TomTom XL 340 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)As soon as I bought it we went from MD to NJ so had no time to connect it to a PC and update it, but out of the box it did everything it was supposed to and was fairly easy to use (this is my first GPS device that I have used).

The instructions that came with it were nothing special and I have since discovered more detailed ones online. I liked that the GPS had the speed we were going and the speed limit of the road you are on in a box at the bottom of the screen which turns red when you are going around 4.5 miles over the limit. One time it stated the limit as 55 when it was really 65 on the NJ turnpike but this was before doing a map update and in any case you can correct it on the device itself and the next time you connect to tomtom online it uploads that information to the general community as you have the option of accepting other people's corrections (you can limit it to when many people submit the same correction instead of trusting a single person's report and by default it will only accept Tomtom's officially confirmed corrections). We also loved the lane assist feature - it comes up nice and clear which lanes you should be in. 2 miles before a turn it already announces what you will be doing and it re-announces it when you get closer and closer. Adjusting the sound level is a 2 touch operation. You press the bottom left part of the screen (can't remember what the image is now) and it brings you straight to the volume level which also has a box checked that allows it to increase the volume with the speed your vehicle is going at which is nice.

The only glitch we had with the unit was that during the first start up we were setting the different options and when it got to where you choose the voice, we began testing out each voice and then went back to the voice we wanted and when I hit the "test" button again I didn't hear anything but ignored that and selected the voice. After a while though it became apparent that we were not getting any voice despite the volume being on and up etc. I went in to the preferences and found the voice selection (the manual in the box was not detailed enough to tell how to do it but it was easy enough to find) and chose another voice which tested okay then reselected the one we wanted which also tested okay and selected it again and all was well.

When I got home I installed the Tomtom Home software from their website (it did not auto install after plugging it in to my PC which was good because it was better to use the latest version anyway - it can be updated after installing so don't worry about that). Whilst doing the maps update I did a little searching around and discovered that some people had a big problem doing the 1st update where there was not enough room on the device for it and it could potentially cause problems on the GPS. Thankfully, it seems to be a problem that was fixed and the map update went well. But in line with some advise online, I went into the device through windows explorer and did a copy and paste of the entire drive which represented the device pasted to my harddrive as a backup (the Tomtom home software can also do this for you, except mine was updating so I couldn't use it yet). My only surprise was that it took over 5 hours to download the update! After that it gave me a screen full of other updates including the software on the GPS itself. I initially deselected the install of the "Dave" voice update that it wanted to download and install, and all the rest went okay. After that though, I decided to update the "Dave" voice too and after downloading it gave me an error that the GPS was too full to install it. I went to the Tomtom site and found the answer to installing it. You load the Tomtom Home software and you can click on "Manage my Device" on page 2 (click the arrow to go to next page of options), from there you can click on on the device and see what is on it and click what you don't want so space is freed up and you can back the files up and then remove them all from there (I removed all the foreign language voices for around an extra 80MB of free space ). After that, installing the latest "Dave" voice went without a hitch. Since I don't use that voice I didn't really have to update it. Apparently the voices marked "computer" (generated) on the device will pronounce all the street names while the natural voices will not. It seems to have a lot of flexibility in being able to add your own list of POI's, voices and many other things. You can also get through the Tomtom Home software many other POI's and stuff other people have provided for free.

So far I am pleased with the purchase and would recommend it to others though probably not at the recommended retail price (at that price you can get a deal on the Garmin 765T - which has many nice features including free traffic reports - not sure how that compares to Tomtom's IQ routes though. We bought ours on Black Friday for a significant price reduction).

Sony NVU73T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)So I am in the market to get a GPS unit for my car, so after reading some mixed reviews about the Sony NV-U73 I decided to try it out for myself.Now I am a Sony fanboy so I was hoping that this product would do very well for me, especially since it was on sale at the local Radio Shack.

Let me start with the good:

1. Beautiful display, bright with lots of contrast.
2. POI's come up on the GPS as their logo...ie If I was driving past a Citgo, the Citgo logo was displayed on the GPS...very cool.
3. The unit will tell you which lane to be in for complicated exits/turns on the highway.When you approach an exit, it goes split screen and shows you which lane you should be in to take the exit.
4. Fairly accurate to tell you when turns are approaching.
5. Displays your speed.
6. Mount is very stick and can move in 360 degrees.

Now the cons:
1. SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW...slow to pick up a signal, super slow to re-calculate a route, and tooth-numbing slow to calculate an initial route.
2. It can't handle hypens, ie if a house number is 28-44, your out of luck cause it can't find that.
3. Minor gripe, but the RDS antenna is not built in.
4. Takes forever to search POI's by name.
5. Mapping alogrithem is good, but not the best out there.

So, if this unit wasn't so slow it would be great.But it was taking about 3-4 minutes to acquire the GPS satellites, and another 2-3 minutes to calculate routes.Not helpful if you're in an unfamiliar location.

There are better units out there for the same price.Get one of those.

(More customer reviews)I bought this unit on Thanksgiving Black Friday. I have used it for over 15 trips. I am totally satisfied with the performance of this GPS. I have tried it on different type roads in southen California, and it works great in all situations. Yes, it is just a entry-level GPS ( but don't get this wrong ), here "entry-level" just means it lacks MP3, Pictures and Bluetooth functions. It has all essentail features with pre-installed the newest US and Canada Map. Re-calculating route is fast and route-picking is wise. The size and shape make this unit extremely portable, you can simply put it in your T-Shirt porket ( this is important since many cars have been broken for stealing the GSP. Just like other reviewers here, I expected there is connectivity kit and desktop software in the original package for updating the Map or customizing the POIs. However, the original package doesn't have those in the box. But it is unfair to blame this for such a low price ( I got it at $200). Besides, I think all we only need is a USB cable and SmartST 2006 software in order to achieve the same features of N40i. I have contacted Navman customer service, they told me that the optional connectivity kit will be available at their online store by the end of Jan, 2007.

A neighbor of mine just bought a Garmin StreetPilot c550 for $699 (not include tax yet) a few days ago. We made a comparison test. We installed two units side by side, during the test drive, I found Navman F20 pick the route smarter than Garmin c550. Calculating time are almost same. For voice instruction, c550 will tell you the street name for turns which is a great feature, F20 doesn't tell you the street name you are turning to at local but you still can see the next turning street's name on the screen. F20 will tell you the freeway "exit number" on the freeway instead of the street name(someone will think this is even better but I still prefer sound out the street name like c550 did). While both of units' voice instruction is very clear enough for me, c550 has much high volume voice than F20. The volume of F20 is OK for me but I hope it can be as high as c550. c550 has a better feature than F20, you can find POIs with detailed info, for example, with a few of touches, you can easily find restaurants or hotel around you with their phone number (This is a great feature my friend like the most since he is a salesman). For F20, it is only easy to find Parking and Gas Stations with one button touch. F20 also lacks the features like play musics and store pictures and bluetooth for making hands-free calls. c550 does have those extra features.

Bottom line, as a basic GPS device, it included the latest GPS technology and update Maps, it is accurate and reliable GPS with much cheaper price than other brands like Garmin an Tomtom. If you are looking for a basic GPS unit not a all-in-one unit, then this is the one I highly recommended. And remember, we should only compare two GPS within same price range.

LG LN740 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)After reading mixed reviews I decided to give this unit a try. Coming from a Lowrance Iway 500c, I was looking for the newer sirfstar III receiver as well as faster routing and quicker satellite acquisition. The LG excelled at all three.

- Great satellite acquisition times, about 5 min for the first cold start and then almost instantaneous for subsequent reconnections. The unit has a sleep feature which seems to keeps the unit on similar to that of a laptop without having to reload maps, the OS, etc.

- Quick routing takes under 5 seconds for the initial destination. If you miss a turn, the unit reroute quick enough to make the next turn. Likewise, the logic of the system is pretty good, which will take to on a different route if optimal rather than trying to get you to U-turn back.

- Very accurate location plotting compared to my old GPS. I was impressed by the system mapping me on which lane direction i was traveling (North vs South, etc) and the maps included even the small police-only paths located in the medians.

- The display and speaker both seemed lacking at first in terms of brightness and sound quality, but upon actually use on a 2 day trip in the NY/NJ/PA area and over 300 miles of driving I found that everything worked well. The screen once located about 2-3 feet away on the windshield looks more than acceptable and the speaker works great once you get used to what it sounds like and to somewhat listen for it if you are blasting your music. The layout is simple yet effective, showing your distance to next turn, and the unit doesnt annoying repeat commands from too far away (go straight for 10 miles, 5 miles, then 2 miles etc).

For the price and the features you cant go wrong. No GPS is perfect -- the garmins Nuvi's dont have multistop routing and the TomTom One still uses Teleatlas maps. Both are more expensive and dont include text-to-speech which makes it a difficult comparison. Going to their next series with advanced features adds on another $200-300 or nearly double the cost. Give the LG a chance and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Sony NVU44 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Text-to-Speech (Gun Metallic) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Sony NV-U44 a few days ago on an impulse buy, as it was on sale at a local electronics store for $138, regular $250. I had thought about buying a GPS before, but I decided I needed one now because my son just began driving and he is not very good at navigating his way around! So after buying it I looked around and heard about the mediocrity of sony's other GPS units and I was a little worried about my purchase. I am happy to say however that this unit does not suffer from any of the issues that the bigger Sony GPSs face. It's touchscreen is snappy with almost instant loading of screens, the POIs are numerous and I haven't gone somewhere yet that wasn't in the GPS. It finds the satellites almost exactly after you turn it on, and route calculations are very swift. If it has to recalculate the route it is almost instantaneous and it is amazing! Also, the searching of addresses is very quick and when I went into the store to play with the other GPS units after I purchased this one I found none of the other GPSs I played with to be as responsive and quick as this one. I find that to get the best navigation you need to set the route mode to "shortest route" away from general and it is more consistent that way. I couldn't find any reviews of this GPS on the internet so I hope I helped, as if you are buying this unit you do not want to buy in the Dark! My only gripe is that the physical buttons are sometimes hard to press, but it is not like you will be pressing them very much, so it's something I don't mind really.

Delphi NAV300 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this GPS around Christmas - 2007 for $150.It lists for $399.I had originally ordered another GPS but the store, where I made my purchase, lost my original order.I agreed to accept the Delphi NAV-300 because it was supposedly of equal or greater value.

The good, the NAV-300 does what it is supposed to do.Punch in a destination and it gets you there, as long as the destination is on the GPS map.I was able to find a particular place in Boston, MA that I would never have found without it.It worked well under a mile of road tunnel.

The bad, I noticed a few quirks right way.For example, when driving on the interstate, right in the middle of the highway with no exits approaching, it will tell you to, "Now turn left," making it necessary for me to turn the volume down.Another problem with this particular unit is that I have not seen a single map update since I purchased the NAV-300.I noticed recently that the NAV-200 had a map update through a third party vendor for $99.The other day, I went to Gray, Maine and it could not find a road.When traveling a stretch of newly built highway, the GPS went off the map.I am guessing I will have to eventually pay for a new map if I want improved service.

This GPS works fine, most of the time, with the existing map but it certainly is worth no more than the $150 that I paid for it, especially if I have to pay a high price for future map updates.I would strongly recommend another brand because it seems that Delphi does not offer maps for any of their GPS units and the NAV-300 is supposed to be a higher-end model.

Buyer beware - do not purchase a GPS unless the manufacturer promises, up-front, free map updates for the life of your unit, otherwise, you will be paying down the road (no pun intended).

Garmin nuvi 550 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)So, finally I got my nuvi.It was a tough choice: many GPS carriers are available, and each has many models that come in vast variety of flavors.I've narrowed it down to Nuvi 550 for the following reasons:

1.Text to speech to me is really annoying.I want my GPS to tell me when and where to make a turn, and not worry about spending extra time looking off the road to confirm street signs. Although with latest update, TTS capabilities are now available for this model (use Garmin's WebUpdater).

2.I wanted my GPS to help me out more than just driving directions.I hike, I camp, I travel all over, and not just North America.I wanted the versatility of being able to navigate and pin point my location on the highway, in the mountains, offroad, and not just be able to locate nearest gas station. Before Nuvi 500/550 I would have had to purchase 2 GPS units: one for the car, one hand-held (e.g. Colorado series).

3.I needed it to be durable, and reliable.8 hour battery life + waterproof function to me are the two features I'm very very happy with.To date, my little nuvi took 2 falls (one on the rocks, and another one flying off down some stairs -- don't ask), and I'm happy to report gadget is functioning flawlessly.I'm not advocating it's indestructible, but it does have durable construction indeed.

4.Satellite communication is superior for the product.Leafs, heavy cloud cover, even indoors, I get fair reception.It does have its quarks rarely, but overall, it pin-points me within 10' radius.Gotta love it.With the latest firmware update location has been even more precise, so it's worth doing it asap.The update also adds a variety of language options and scooter mode, which is really neat.

Here's something to be aware of...This model unlike 500 does not come with topo maps or marine maps.It felt like a fair trade because it gave me Canada, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and all of US maps (includes Alaska and Hawaii) vs. 48 lower states+topo in the other model only.But here's a catch.No mapSource software.There are so many free topo maps (and for that matter many others -- e.g. Israel maps, which garmin does not market) available, but there's no way to load them.Because of the proprietary interface, mapSource is the easiest way to take advantage of all these resources.There is third party software available, but it's not the easiest thing to use.Another annoyance is that unit does not come with any case.There are not hard to find, but still.

So, besides lacking the software, this is a great unit worth every penny.I found LCD display to have good visibility in a daylight, volume was great - I could hear it just fine with stereo on, and overall display was smart and simple.It's small and light, so it's easy to carry it around, and suction cup for the windshield is great, no need to get any extras.I also like the fact that it has swappable batteries. On long trips with no access to electricity, just bring a few extras, and you won't get stuck. Really no learning curve to using it, and performance is fantastic.Great investment, no regrets here.

FM transmitter is terrible

There is absolutely no support on the web for this product. You cannot download drivers, software, or manuals .
You have to exit navigation mode to do anything else, like listen to music, view pictures, or change any settings such as adjusting the brightness.
The maps are on the CD ROM, my CD ROM was defective, and kept receiving data read errors on every PC in my house when I tried to read from the CD ROM.
MUSIC: There is not playlist or auto add. You can only play the files in one folder, if you have multiple folders you cannot go to the top level folder and play all of the files in the sub folders...so using it as a music player is not really a viable option, unless you have all of your music in one single folder and almost no desktop music player (i.e. windows media player, itunes) arranges music files into a single folder

Video Player: is ok if you can figure which mp4 video files it will play, because it won't play most of them...don't bother looking in the instructions for details because you won't find them. Just like the music player you will have to have all of your videos in a single folder if you want to be able to have anything similar to a playlist. This doesn't represent as big a problem as the audio player as long as you are watching TV shows or movies because they are longer so you are trying to find a new track every 3 or 4 minutes.
Navigation Screen: The maps are little plain, pretty plain, there isn't a lot of difference between the 2D maps and the 3D maps. You won't find anything for trips like you find on the manufacture's devices like GARMIN, so there is no Odometer, Tripometer, or Speedometer. That is a pretty depressing point for me
Bluetooth connected pretty easy on my AT&T Tilt phone, but was unable to use the contacts function via bluetooth; also the SMS messages function does not work either.
Pros:

It has audio
Navigation works pretty well. It is pretty easy to use, but you need to spend some time getting to know the setup.
Voice is clear and pronounces most street names pretty well, although the speaker is so poor it is hard to hear a highway speeds.

Overall:
I would not recommend this product, it's a shame because it has a lot of features but none of them work well enough to be a selling point. Really disappointing is the fact the speaker is so poor and that the FM transmitter is pretty much worthless because that is something that should have been pretty obvious during product testing.
If Sanyo comes out with a firmware/software update, I might change my recommendation; until then I would navigate away from this GPS.

UPDATE:
After 3 days the unit suddenly stopped working. It will power on with a "SANYO" logo and that is it, did all of the resets that the manual called for. Nothing.
Tried calling customer support----unable to get through. Sanyo has a very simple phone tree that gives you two options. 1 for if you purchased walmart cameras and 2. for all other Sanyo products, when you press 2, it starts the phone tree all over again.

Update 2: Finally got in touch with the Sanyo Helpless Desk, told the them all of the troubleshooting I did and the pretty much told me to take it back where i got it.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT !!!!

Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. The nuvi 1250 even remembers where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nuvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. HotFix Satellite Prediction
Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nuvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to three days after the device was last turned off.

I planned several trips, researched numerous items as to locations for my upcoming trip. During the trip I searched for my nearest Starbucks coffee houses, rest areas and restaurants. I found this little device to be invaluable, for my Spouse also (who, not being a computer person... immediately began using it). I am addicted...I love it. Can't wait to start planning the next trip. I did have 2 instances of misdirection to areas that were not as requested...(1)a Starbucks (was not where I was directed...I accredited this one to the fact that Starbucks had closed some of its stores in recent months)(2)a restaurant was not where I was directed. I believe Streets / Lanes / Avenues and Ways played a big part in this misdirection. I love my Garmin nuvi 1490LMT 5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator.
One last item... my vehicle is equipped with OnStar and the first cell phone to be turned on in the vehicle is usually the first to be picked up by the OnStar Bluetooth phone system (it only handles one at a time).... The Garmin nuvi 1490LMT 5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator will pick up a second Bluetooth cell phone and is loud and clear. Thanks Garmin.
