Alpine Blackbird PMD-B100T - GPS receiver - automotive Review

Alpine Blackbird PMD-B100T - GPS receiver - automotive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought an Alpine Blackbird because of the rep Alpine has, and for its good looks. I admit that I didn't do the homework I usually do online before the purchase. At first I was extremely disappointed because it seemed to route me on wierd pathways. I even exchanged it at the store for another because I was convinced there was a problem with the unit I bought.

After sitting down and "playing" with it for several hours, I finally understand that the routing you choose (there are four: shortest, quickest, and minimize, or maximize, use of interstates) makes a HUGE difference. Pick some local places you are familiar with, sit in your most comfortable chair, and choose different routing methods to the same place, using the demo feature. You'll soon learn how this device works, and then you will truly be able to enjoy it for what it is--a great piece of equipment.

It's beautiful to look at. The windshield-mount cradle is sturdy and doesn't allow it to vibrate around. It's easy to see the screen, and the only real quibble I now have is battery life--about two hours on a full charge. I plan to use it on my motorcycle, and I don't want to add the wiring to my bike, so I'll buy a second battery and change it out when necessary.

Overall, I rate this product highly. The main thing is to take some time to really understand how it works. There may be systems out there that are more intuitive, but once you get a handle on this machine, I think it is a very good one. It retailed at close to 500 d's until the new "200" model came out, so you can get some great near 200 d deals on these B100T's right now. I'd say, do it.

Cobra CPI 475 400 Watt Power Inverter Review

Cobra CPI 475 400 Watt Power Inverter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We needed a higher power interter to use in our RV when camping without shore power. We needed to power two laptop computers, charge cell phones and PDAs and run a small fan. This Cobra unit reviewed well so I ordered one from Amazon. It was delivered in just a few days (thanks Amazon). It has a solid feel to it, connectors are of good quality, and it is small enough not to be obtrusive in the confines of an RV.I used the cigarette lighter plug and put this on our dining table. The two AC plugs accommodated two AC adapters for laptops. As a bonus, there is a USB port on the Cobra that will supply 5 volts! So, I can charge my Blackberry simultaneously. What a delight!!The unit has an internal fan which only runs as needed. If I'm just charging a cell phone, then the fan does not run - but when I've got a load on - the fan runs and effectively cools the inverter. This is not a pure sine wave inverter but I've had no trouble at all using it with various laptops, pdas, fans, and cell phone chargers.I've not used it to power a TV or Radio (those could be more sensitive to interter noise). After a months use, I'm delighted with the inverter - it meets my needs completely.

XtremeMac IPV-APV-10 AirPlay Boost FM Transmitter for iPod Video (Black) Review

XtremeMac IPV-APV-10 AirPlay Boost FM Transmitter for iPod Video
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A good FM transmitter is certainly hard to come by. In general none are actually good; it usually comes down to finding the lesser of too evils. I previously had the original Airplay by XtremeMac. I liked that transmitter a lot although there were some problems. When I got my new 80 gig iPod, i needed to get a new transmitter and --after a lot of research-- decided on this one.
Simply stated, this transmitter is ingenious, the best out there. The signal strength is amazing (and far surpasses the old one), I've actually gotten a clear sound standing over 35 away from the receiver. The Airply Boost actually over-powered my friend's iTrip (when we put them on the same station) and his was closer to the receiver.
The on-screen display with the controls is really easy to use and has some useful features that other transmitters do not (like the mono/stereo option). The fact that it is on the screen means that the Airplay Boost does not waste the battery unnecessarily.
That brings me to another point: portability. The Airplay is very portable. Unlike the Belkin Tunecast(s)there is no extra wire. Rather, the Airplay becomes part of the iPod. In addition, the Airplay is incredibly light (and quite chic in my opinion) so it does not really affect weight. Some FM transmitters attempt to sell themselves on their great car integration. True, some may fit into the cup holders, but with the pass-through dock connector, you can plug in AND take out a power supply whether it is in your house or it is a car charger (which you can't always on the car only ones). I'd like to go back to another point: the battery. The Airplay runs off the iPod's battery, which is great for transportation.
The biggest problem I had with the old one was that it drained the battery a lot. Maybe it's just the new battery, but I find the Airplay Boost to affect the battery a lot less, and with the pass through dock connector, power is rarely an issue.
Just a note on the design, the extra antenna actually rotates (which turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me).
The Airplay Boost, as a matter of fact, only has one issue. That is that the Airplay prevents you from putting most (not all) cases on your iPod. For me, the pros greatly outweighed that con and I don't think about it too much. As a matter of fact, I can't really think of any other cons. So, for all iPod owners, the Airplay Boost is a must-have and far surpasses any other FM transmitters (it has a plethora of unique features and superior power). I've had mine for over a month and I use it more than my headphones. For $31 on Amazon, its a steal.

Uniden Gps402 Maptrax 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Uniden Gps402 Maptrax 4 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All of the GPS units in the $300-$400 price range have some limitations. But, this Uniden GPS-402 works great is easy to use and has very few negatives. The only ones which I could see were no text-to-speech capability and no Bluetooth wireless functions. If these two issues do not concern you, then this is the GPS for you. This is a great looking GPS with a beautiful 4" screen which is auto adjusting and excellent in direct sunlight. The 402 uses the latest version of NavTeq maps and has wonderful planning & routing options which you cannot get on the Garmin models (add, delete & mark way points and view routes). The GPS-402 comes with an excellent windshield dock and bracket which is easy to attach and remove and is very stable.Exceptional ergonomics and functionality - one can cancel the current route by simply touching the corner of the map screen. One can get to the route option screen by touching any part of the map screen while proceeding to the destination.Even though it does not have text-to-speech the GPS-402 works very well with visual bars and a voice counting down from 1000 feet before turns. One can display the entire route on the screen by simply dragging the screen toward the destination point before you drive it.The unit can also route by street intersections as well as addresses and POI's.The POI database is current and seems to have a countless numbers of restaurants and other points which I checked for some small and large towns. It pulled up every imaginable museum for the greater Seattle area. This was better than expected since it states over 2 million POI's total.Maybe they save on some categories like movie theaters. This GPS also has excellent external buttons and controls which can same time over using screen menus. The GPS-402 has the latest SiRF III chipset and tracks in seconds with instant auto rerouting. Did I mention that this GPS seems well built and comes in a very attractive case with black rubber grips on the sides (looks better than the picture). I understand that the Garmins are very easy to use and are great products, but I will stay with the Uniden with a larger and better looking screen , more functionality & routing options, with the same ease of use for less money than the Nuvi-350.

Harman Kardon GPS-510 4-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator and Media Player Review

Harman Kardon GPS-510 4 inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator and Media Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nice looking device, fits perfectly in hand. Touch screen is slick and very responsive... menus are easy to navigate and a home key is always present to take you back to beginning.

Charged it up and took it outside... was surprised when it locked on the instant i powered up... it had our spot on the map where it should be, so we started walking to end of street and the 510 tracked almost instantly when we were walking, as well as when we turned direction and headed back other way. Spent the next few days having it on in car and GPS function worked extremely well... never had any mistakes or weird routes (keep in mind only tested over a few days)... said names of streets clearly. Seemed to perform very well as GPS device.

Now for media player review:

OK, first of all -- the screen on it is very sharp and crisp... demo movies, and movies i loaded on to it, display very nicely. converted some dvd's to .avi or .xvid (cant remember which right now) and it played with no problems.

Anyway the biggest disappointment in the media department is that there are virtually no basic options/controls for mp3 or video playback. On videos there is absolutely no options to select from (zoom, full, etc.)... but they played well, so not a big deal.

MP3, however, is a different story. There is no "now playing" feature, nor the ability to create playlists from the player. (and of course no equalizer options or anything else.) So say you have a bunch of pop songs on the player and a bunch of classical and/or comedy tracks -- if you are in your car and you want it to shuffle through all of your pop songs there is no way to do that unless you have made a playlist on your pc comprised of only pop songs and have downloaded that playlist to the player. VERY restrictive. You can sort by artist/track/album in the player.... but you can't choose it to select more than one specific artist/track/album at a time. So if you want to listen on shuffle -- it's either shuffle through EVERY song on the player, or shuffle through one artists tracks. you can't specify more than one of any category to play through the player. Big bummer.

Add into all of that the fact that you are restricted to a max of 4GB of storage on an SD card -- so a couple of movies and you are going to have to buy another card if you want to carry around a lot of songs at the same time. Oh and no ability to view pictures either in case you wondered.

Summary: If you are looking at this as the perfect device to include mp3,video, gps -- i would pass. Personally the restrictions of the audio playback, along with no pics and 4 gb max just wouldn't cut it for me. I use my mp3 player (creative vision w) all the time in car, in house, etc. and need those basic mp3 controls. The extra price of the 510 for the media capabilities isn't justified IMO. For the same price of the unit ($400ish) i can get a nice gps only device and a solid media player (creative w for instance) with 30 - 60 gb of onboard storage.

Now if you aren't a big mp3/video user, then perhaps you would be satisfied with the limited media options as a trade off for the convenience of having it all in one package instead of having to carry around 2 units.

Hope this helps someone.

SanDisk Sansa Speaker Dock for Sansa e100 and m200 Series Players Review

SanDisk Sansa Speaker Dock for Sansa e100 and m200 Series Players
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like other reviewers, I was impressed with the sound out of such seemingly small speakers. However, my Sansa is much newer (e280, and apparently not backward compatible with all the accesories...) and it did not fit on the dock or in the clips - nor did any of the additional connection configurations work to power/charge the player while playing it through the speakers. The headphone jack connector worked to play the music from my player through the speakers, but that was it.So, my recommendation is that this system is great if you have the correct version of the Sansa player. If not, the jumble of cords and lack of charging capability make this system less desirable.I am returning mine and plan to buy something that my Sansa will dock into directly.

UPDATE:I purchased the Altec Lansing im510 Dock for my e280 Sansa at Best Buy and it sounds (and charges)great. It's about $80 now.

Harman Kardon GPS-300 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to get my Dad a GPS for his summer road trip.I have a GPS-500 myself and knew it would be easy enough for my parents to figure out. From the pictures of the product it looked like the GPS-300 had the same easy to use interface as the 500.Thankfully it did.My dad had no problems learning to use the device.GPS locks quickly and the interface is snappy.

The 4" widescreen is a huge plus compared to other $300 GPS devices. 3.5" is just too small for someone my parent's age to see.I haven't seen anyone else offering a screen of this quality at this price point.

My parents don't use the music player, but I can confirm it is the same player as my GPS-500, with the exception of video and DRM support. It lets you browse by album, artist, genre and playlists.Music is played from the SD Card slot.

At this price you can't go wrong. It's as good as other products costing much more including the nuvi.In my opinion, the graphics and UI are the best of any PND at any price. If you need video and/or DRM go for the GPS-500.Either way you won't regret your purchase.

Product Description:

The 4-inch widescreen LCD display offers a wider map view than standard GPS navigators. Harmon Kardon is lauded within the trade for its high-quality loudspeakers and A/V components, and now the company has leveraged its expertise to develop the Guide + Play GPS-300, a portable GPS navigator with an integrated MP3/WMA player. The GPS-300 sports a sleek, 4-inch widescreen interface that gives users access to a robust navigation system with a simple touch of a finger. The interface lets you toggle between device menus with ease, perform a point-of-interest (POI) search to find nearby restaurants, coffee shops, or bookstores, and access the music player at a moment's notice. More significantly, the GPS-300's navigation and music functions are tightly integrated, so you can see and hear all the important navigation information even while playing MP3 files--a rarity among portable navigation devices. Users can even set volume priority between the two functions.
The 4-inch widescreen LCD display, meanwhile, offers a larger map view when in GPS mode than standard navigators, with a 480 x 272 pixel resolution to ensure a clear, crisp viewing experience. It's also a breeze to supplement the built-in U.S. and Canada basemap thanks to the Secure Digital (SD) card slot, which accepts cards as large as 4 GB. As a result, you can install European street maps, rural U.S. street maps, topographical camping maps, and a host of other map types. And, of course, you can add MP3 and WMA files via the cards as well.

The GPS-300 offers tightly integrated navigation and music functions, with the ability to prioritize the volume levels. A pocket-sized, virtually invisible portable mount secures the slim GPS-300 for automotive use, with a ball-and-socket joint providing an almost unlimited number of viewing angles. As a result, you can easily position the screen so that it can be seen from anywhere in the vehicle. Other details include 3 million points of interest, 2 GB of internal flash memory, a USB 2.0 high-speed interface, a rechargeable battery that runs for up to five hours per charge, a 12-volt power cable for in-vehicle charging, and a carrying case that's perfect for travel.

On the first speed bump I hit, the cradle left the mount, thank God there was no traffic on the road and I was able to pick up my GPS before it got run over, I used some rubber tape to secure the cradle in the ball and then while going over a railroad track, the whole ball came off the mount. The one that looks like a zip tie works much better.

Coleman 400 Watt Power Inverter - 800 Watts Peak Power PMP400 Review

Coleman 400 Watt Power Inverter - 800 Watts Peak Power PMP400
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just before Hurricane Charley and his 2 sisters rubbed up against the Orlando area a couple years ago, I bought the Coleman 400 Watt Inverter. We lost our power for 5 days at a time.

Clamping this unit directly to the battery and closing the hood, I ran an extension cord into the house and plugged a 3-way into the end.We could run 3 12in. oscillating fans all night and sleep comfortably!

Most fans draw less than 1 amp per hour, so the draw on the battery is minimal.Just fire up the car (sitting in the AC) for a few minutes and the battery is topped off.

I went this route because the generator method has too many negatives for me: Theft or worse, fumes or worse, and the incessant noise. This can make your neighbors more than a little testy, especially if they have no power at all.And as always happens, the more you have the more you want. All we really needed was a way to cool off and cold drinks. The cooling off problem resolved, we turned to cooling food and drinks. This is easy.Freeze clean gallon milk jugs with drinkable water. As it melts, you've got cold water! (Unlike tornadoes, hurricanes let you know they are coming; you have time to prepare.) All of your cold stuff will be cold already so the ice chest and frozen water will work fine for a good many days. 2 ice chests lets you go get more stuff without it thawing or melting before you get back home.We use a Coleman stove outside for cooking and making coffee. The coffee became a huge hit with the neighbors! We use battery operated lights instead of candles.Candles are a no no!Not much light, unwanted heat and a real fire hazard.Candles are for romance. A boom box will run forever on batteries as long as you don't use the cd or cassette player. and lastly, we have a small battery operated TV. We are news junkies.

Here's how to figure how many amps you are drawing off your car battery:
Amps X Volts(120)= Watts.Examples: .5amps X 120volts = 60 Watts.3amps X 120volts = 360 Watts. That's the limit for this 400 Watt Inverter, so forget your big ticket items.

Delphi NAV200 GPS Navigation System - NAV20000-11B1 Review

Delphi NAV200 GPS Navigation System - NAV20000-11B1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this item about a month ago and find it very useful.I live in Los Angeles so a GPS system is very helpful finding my way around.I agree with another reviewer that the load time is a bit slow, but nothing that would cause me to have an issue with it.The maps themselves are Navtech maps and are used in the majority of preinstalled GPS systems of major car makers. There are several options with the 'advanced' mode and the basic mode offers simple navigation tools. I would recommend this to anyone considering a GPS system who doesn't want to spend over $500.

Mio P550 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Mio P550 3.5 inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't recommend this item. There are a couple of pluses, but there are a number of problems:

First, the pluses--
--The price is good for a GPS unit and PDA.
--The SIRF III GPS received is responsive, receiving good reception even inside my house (except for the basement).
--The Wifi is fast.

Now the minuses:

--The battery life is poor.I ran through a fully charged battery in a little over an hour with the Wifi on.
--The screen is poor quality. There is bleeding of text and images and the resolution does not appear good.Possibly, this is because the screen is quite large for 320x240 resolution.
--The PDA functions are not integrated with the mapping and GPS functions. E.g., there does not appear to be a way to access your contacts list within the Mio Maps.
--Mio Maps is clunky software. It requires multiple taps and is not intuitive.
--There are typical Windows Mobile memory problems because applications do not shut down when closed.I guess I'll need to pursue the third party software route to address this problem.
--Internet Explorer is a dated and inconvenient browser for mobile devices. It doesn't format pages well and will not load secure sites such as Chase Banking.I downloaded Opera mobile but they want to charge $24 for a registered copy.
--The device is quite heavy. It is industrial in appearance; not attractive but not terribly ugly.It is a bit odd that the screen is so recessed.
--I was surprised that the device connects to ActiveSync via USB 1.1.This causes synchronization to be very slow.
--Skype did not work very well even though I have a very fast home Wifi network.
--Almost no software came with device (only Worldmate, Mio Mapping and the basic Windows Mobile).Outlook was not even included. This is a first, in my experience.

I haven't used the mapping software extensively. It's based on TeleAtlas.

Garmin zumo 220 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Motorcycle GPS Navigator Review

Garmin zumo 220 3.5 inch Bluetooth Motorcycle GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Zumo is a great motorcycle GPS but it does have its flaws.

The first thing you'll notice is that the Zumo doesn't come with a printed users guide. Garmin expects you to download the PDF version. It was easy to find on-line and this approach is fine since we're all supposed to be going green. What ships in box is a quick start guide. The web site says "installation instructions" are included but this is not accurate. The only installation information is contained in the quick start guide. It's pretty basic but more than adequate unless you want to attempt installing the wiring harness. If you plan on using the wiring harness you need to know how to tap into the electrical on your bike and handle all of the cable routing yourself or take it to a pro for assistance. (One note on the wiring harness: the cable doesn't include anything to cover the USB/power connector so if you install the harness and don't have the GPS unit plugged in the end of the power adapter is fully exposed to the elements.)

The second thing you'll notice is the device doesn't come with a wall charger. There is the permanent wiring harness and a car charger but they didn't include a wall charger. With a battery life of almost 8 hours I planned on just charging the unit at night and skipping the wiring harness since nearly all of my rides are under 8 hours. For the cost of the unit I was disappointed that I had to scavenge to find a power charger.

The battery life provided on Garmin's website states "up to 8 hours". I think this is a bit of a stretch. If you turn the volume off, turn the screen brightness down to under 50% (the default), and turn off Bluetooth you can get close to 8 hours. When riding with voice prompts, screen brightness at 80 to 90 (on a sunny day) and Bluetooth enabled I was able to get just over 5 hours of battery life. Still very respectable and more than most motorcyclists need for a single day.

One of the nicest features of the Zumo 220 is the ability to plan your routes on your PC and load them on to the GPS unit using Garmin City Navigator. It's easy to install but the unlock code, which is needed to use the maps, comes on a non descript yellow sheet that looks like something you should simply ignore or throw away. You need this special yellow sheet so be careful or you'll be explaining to your wife why you're digging through the garbage! Once installed and unlocked City Navigator is great. It's easy to use and simple to transfer routes to and from the GPS unit.

The GPS unit itself is a nice size but a little thick. If you're thinking you'll just throw this unit into your back pocket you can but there are two issues. First the unit is thicker than you expect and you will be aware of the bulge in your back pocket - it's not a petite unit. Second there is no power lock and it's very easy to turn the unit on when inserting the unit into your pocket or when moving around. It would have been better to have some sort of power button lock. I've resorted to removing the battery from its waterproof compartment, which is easy and quick to do.

The user interface is very intuitive and most of the data fields presented on main page can be customized, even when in motion. The keyboard is easy to use and has two modes that basically change the size of the buttons on the screen to make it easier to use when wearing gloves.

One nice feature is the fuel tank alert. Just enter the total mileage you expect to get from a tank of fuel and how many miles before empty that you want warnings and the unit keeps track of everything. Interesting note: the unit has multiple modes like driving, motorcycling, scooter etc. The only mode that fuel tank alerts work is when in motorcycle mode.

Another solid feature of the unit is if you do switch between a motorcycle and a car the Zumo 220 remembers your preferences for the route types of each mode. This makes it nice not having to reprogram anything when going between modes.

I have encountered a few issues with custom voices downloaded from the Garmin Garage. On at least one of the custom voices the unit seems to get confused and reboots on occasion. Changing back to the preinstalled voices seems to have fixed this quirky problem.

I have a big v-twin and my bike has a healthy dose of vibrations, especially when accelerating or using engine braking. The Zumo 220 is rugged enough to handle the vibrations with ease and the RAM mounts that came with the unit work great. One note on the u-bar attachment for the handlebar: If you have larger handlebars than 1 inch you're going to need to run out to your local hardware store to get a larger u-bar. If you've got a 7/8" - 1", like most people, you'll be fine.

Overall the Zumo 220 is a high quality unit that's easy to use, rugged and ready to hit the road. Just plan on doing a little extra shopping for things that Garmin should have included, especially given the high price point of this unit.
