XtremeMac IPV-APV-10 AirPlay Boost FM Transmitter for iPod Video (Black) Review

XtremeMac IPV-APV-10 AirPlay Boost FM Transmitter for iPod Video
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A good FM transmitter is certainly hard to come by. In general none are actually good; it usually comes down to finding the lesser of too evils. I previously had the original Airplay by XtremeMac. I liked that transmitter a lot although there were some problems. When I got my new 80 gig iPod, i needed to get a new transmitter and --after a lot of research-- decided on this one.
Simply stated, this transmitter is ingenious, the best out there. The signal strength is amazing (and far surpasses the old one), I've actually gotten a clear sound standing over 35 away from the receiver. The Airply Boost actually over-powered my friend's iTrip (when we put them on the same station) and his was closer to the receiver.
The on-screen display with the controls is really easy to use and has some useful features that other transmitters do not (like the mono/stereo option). The fact that it is on the screen means that the Airplay Boost does not waste the battery unnecessarily.
That brings me to another point: portability. The Airplay is very portable. Unlike the Belkin Tunecast(s)there is no extra wire. Rather, the Airplay becomes part of the iPod. In addition, the Airplay is incredibly light (and quite chic in my opinion) so it does not really affect weight. Some FM transmitters attempt to sell themselves on their great car integration. True, some may fit into the cup holders, but with the pass-through dock connector, you can plug in AND take out a power supply whether it is in your house or it is a car charger (which you can't always on the car only ones). I'd like to go back to another point: the battery. The Airplay runs off the iPod's battery, which is great for transportation.
The biggest problem I had with the old one was that it drained the battery a lot. Maybe it's just the new battery, but I find the Airplay Boost to affect the battery a lot less, and with the pass through dock connector, power is rarely an issue.
Just a note on the design, the extra antenna actually rotates (which turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me).
The Airplay Boost, as a matter of fact, only has one issue. That is that the Airplay prevents you from putting most (not all) cases on your iPod. For me, the pros greatly outweighed that con and I don't think about it too much. As a matter of fact, I can't really think of any other cons. So, for all iPod owners, the Airplay Boost is a must-have and far surpasses any other FM transmitters (it has a plethora of unique features and superior power). I've had mine for over a month and I use it more than my headphones. For $31 on Amazon, its a steal.

Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter for MP3 Players (White) Review

Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter for MP3 Players
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This thing has a range of about a foot, with really poor quality sound. It may be as good or better than other transmitters that are available, but it's still pretty lousy. Not really as good as standard FM, probably halfway between AM and FM, and interrupted by the occasional static.I modified it as described in the websites that describe how to do such things, but the sound is so crappy, that it's hardly worth the price. The modified range is about 50 feet.

I realize that it solves a problem of allowing an MP3 player to work in your car, and there aren't any good alternatives, but but this isn't going to make anyone really happy. It's just a barely passable solution. It does what it's supposed to, and if you modify it, it has much better range, but it's really not a great result.

UPDATE: I really wanted a product like this, so I bought the "whole house transmitter" right on Amazon and it works.Near FM quality sound, decent range (about 40 feet). It only broadcasts on one of 6 channels, but at least the quality is acceptable if you can find an open one, and it punches through weak stations so the channel doesn't really have to be completely clear. It's 3X the price, but that seems to be what it takes to get decent quality sound.

Product Description:
With this handy device you can listen to your favorite tunes through any FM stereo receiver with your iPod, PDA, PC, or laptop, even an MP3, CD, or cassette player from up to 30 feet away. The Belkin TuneCast II Mobile FM Transmitter makes it easy to wirelessly connect portable music players to your car or home stereo FM radio. Simply plug the TuneCast II into the headphone jack of your player or connect it to your PC or laptop computer, then tune your car stereo or receiver to any clear FM frequency.
There's also an auto on/off function that lets the device simply power on whenever an audio signal is detected. If there is no signal, the TuneCast II switches off after 60 seconds, helping to preserve battery life. There's also four programmable memory slots that let you save the clearest station wherever you go. The device comes with a DC cable for optional battery-free operation, but it only works with the Belkin Mobile Power Cord for 3G iPod. Batteries are included.

Belkin F8M010 Tunecast III FM Transmitter - Universal Review

I had a lot of optimism for this because my girlfriend has a
Griffin FM transmitter for her ipod and it works great.I liked the awesome display and that it could operate on batteries. The only problem is that it doesn't work.I tried it in both of my cars (a truck and a car) and I held it all over the interior of both cars trying to find the "sweet spot" but I couldn't.I also tried going up the whole FM frequency and couldn't find anything that would work.In frustration I picked up the Sony cassette adapter and it works perfectly and sounds great.Oh well.

Slacker 8 GB Portable Radio with 40 Stations (Black) Review

Slacker 8 GB Portable Radio with 40 Stations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Slacker portables bring a new dimension to music listening.
Without the hassle of ripping your own MP3s, the service allows you to create your own customized radio stations and then, by WiFi or USB, load them onto the player for your enjoyment at any time.

Many reviews have discussed the player in depth, so let me address a couple of issues in regards to the older player, the G1, versus the new player, the G2.

The G1 player is obviously bigger, and while one advantage is an easier to read screen, it is a bigger package to carry around.

The G1 player also has not had any further firmware updates since March '08, while the G2 player has had frequent updates. Therefore, some important features such as improved battery life, and better USB connectivity have not (yet) been updated for the G1. Please check the slacker forums if you're thinking about buying a G1 to see if any updates have occurred since this was posted.

The G1 player lacks an equalizer control setting, while this was incorporated into the G2 player.I can't say that the G2's equalizer is worth much, as they don't have any user adjustable settings.

The G2 player has a setting to manage the WiFi settings, whereas this has not (yet) been implemented in the G1 player. This again reflects the lack of any further apparent support for this first generation player.

As the price of the 8Gb G1 player has not dropped substantially (although for a time it was selling for less than [...] from Amazon), the G2 unit appears to be the primary hardware that is receiving support from the company.

The G1 player has had an annoying habit of occasionally having a break in audio at the beginning of a song. This has not been a problem with the G2 units. It is unknown what creates the problem, but there has not been a fix issued for the G1 unit to address this issue.

Remember, if you use the web based player at [...] ..... not all the songs that can be heard on the web player are licensed to be downloaded onto the portable players. The company says that there are they are continually gaining more licensing rights, but it is unclear what percentage of music that you hear on the webplayer can be transferred to the portable player. Even with this limitation, you can create a wide variety of stations and enjoy them on the units.

However, for your money, you will probably find the G2 unit less buggy, and better supported by the company with updates.

Monster A-IP-FM-CH-PS Wireless FM Transmitter Review

Monster A-IP-FM-CH-PS Wireless FM Transmitter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, people are getting this transmitter confused with the previous Monster FM transmitter. You are NOT limited to only 8 stations. This transmitter allows you to program in ANY station you choose, and it's very easy to do so.

Pros:
You can program in any station! The stations are NOT predetermined so any empty station you find, just program it in and youre set to go, which makes this perfect for road trips.

Charges up your iPod while you go.

You can set three 'favourite' stations so you can switch back and forth between a couple if one goes out.

Very simple and easy to use.Not a lot of cords to get tangled up.

Cons
Every FM transmitter you buy for your iPod is going to have a loss in sound quality. It is NOT going to sound like youre playing a CD.It sounds like the radio.

No dock or anything to set the little station switcher on.I would've like even a double sided sticker mount so I could stick it to the dash or something instead of it hanging there, but I'm really just being picky here.

Finding a station in the surrounding Cleveland area was tough! There are hardly any completely static stations (I never realized how many darn country stations there are here, yeesh.)So far I have found 4 open stations. However, this is NOT the companys fault.Finding a clear open station is soley going to depend on where you live and where you are when you drive.

I found 3 completely open static stations starting at 87.5 and up.OF COURSE, this FM transmitter starts at 88.1.Grrr.But it wasn't a problem because in the end I was able to find 4 open ones throughout the spectrum. However, it would've been nice if it started at 87.5.

Okay this is COMPLETELY an aesthetic complaint but I dislike red LED lights. My car has blue so it doesn't match, but once again, that is completely nitpicking.

All in all, this is worth the money. It really is a must if you want to play your iPod on the road, but don't expect it to sound like your surround sound home theatre system. It is an FM transmitter.

Kensington Universal FM Transmitter for MP3 Players (Black) Review

Kensington Universal FM Transmitter for MP3 Players
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this Kensington FM transmitter for about 2 months and in my hands it has very acceptable sound and not alot of static.

Unfortunately it has one fatal design flaw that makes listening to classical, jazz and any other type of music with any quiet passages VERY FRUSTRATING.During the quiet parts the unit will shut itself off causing my car audio to emit a ear piercing screech when it loses the signal. I haven't measured it but it seems like as little a 10-15 seconds of quiet causes this behavior.

This makes this unit useless for classical music and quite a bit of jazz and other similar styles. If you listen to quiet music, avoid at all costs. If you don't it is the best transmitter I have tried.

Monster Cable RadioPlay Car Stereo Wireless FM Transmitter (MBL-FM XMTR) Review

Monster Cable RadioPlay Car Stereo Wireless FM Transmitter
Average Reviews:

Now that my faithful old car cassette receiver won't stop reversing tape direction, I haven't been able to use a cassette adapter for my mp3 player. So I tried this Monster FM Transmitter, and I'm sorry to say the sound is nowhere near as good as the cassette adapter. The frequency response is good, but unfortunately there's beaucoup de noise and harmonic distortion as well.Loud rock music doesn't suffer too badly, but if you're a lover of classical music or acoustic jazz, I doubt you'll find this rig very listenable. For a company known for its high-end cable products, Monster also seems to have very poor customer support, if my experience is any indication.I am still awaiting a reply to my email asking how to improve the unit's reception to minimize distortion.Does any company make a car CD receiver with a stereo miniplug input for mp3 players? That would be ideal!Otherwise, if you have a cassette receiver, get a cassette adapter; if you have a CD receiver... well, the Monster won't make you very happy...

Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter for MP3 Players (Black) Review

Belkin TuneCast II FM Transmitter for MP3 Players
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, all FM transmitters cause noise on the receiving end, if you turn volume up enough. And don't expect the sound quality to be better than your FM radio itself. It will be worse. If possible, use a wired option such as a "cassette connector" for car. That said, wireless transmitters do offer convenience, and some are better, while others are worse, depend mostly on unit's output power, range, and station selections. After trying out 4 of them personally, I found station selections to be the most important in getting good quality sound on your radio.Hence, the Belkin TuneCast II is the best out there. As far as I know (in the price range I search), it is the only one on the market that offers full frequency digital tuning (Arkon offers transmitters with full frequency analog tuning - SoundFeeder 150x).

Here is a summary of my review on the four transmitters I tried.

Belkin TuneCast II:
+ full frequency digital tuning with 0.05 stepping
+ 4-station memory
+ dual power (battery and DC)
+ auto on/off
+ good output and range
+ LCD display
+ cord storage on unit
- USB power will be nicer, as I have my own USB2DC adapter
- LCD not lighted

iRock 400FM
+ dual power (battery and DC)
+ good output and range
- only 4 preset stations
- dangling cord
- kind of ugly

Arkon SoundFeeder 250
+ good output and range
+ cord storage on unit
- only 8 preset stations
- battery power only (spec claimes 60hr, but I seriously doubt it as others with similar battery could only last 10-13hr)

SIIG Music Adapter Pro
+ dual power (battery and USB, could be tripple if you have your own USB2DC adapter)
+ ok output and range (volume is kind of low)
+ lighted LCD
+ cord storage on unit
- claimed to have 9 preset stations with autoscan, but it was so hard to operate that I could only verify 5 stations through manual stepping, and autoscan does NOT pick up the best station
- battery compartment very hard to open
- DO NOT BUY THIS, even though it looks good, and has good spec

Here are some personal tips on any FM transmitter setup:
1) If your radio and transmitter allows 0.1 stepping, choose an even frequency station such as 88.40, since very very few stations broadcast on even frequecies.
2) Make sure your MP3 files have loud enough volume, so you don't have to boost your MP3 unit or radio's volume too much.High volume magnifies noise. There are many software out there that fine tunes MP3, including volume.
3) If you have to boost volume, boost MP3 unit's volume instead of radio's.High radio volume causes more noise.
4) Always make sure you have new battery or are using DC adapter.Low power forces you to turn up volume, and it in turn causes noise.
5) In general, songs fair better with these transmitters than solo instruments, as noise could become more obvious on the later.

Griffin Technology iTrip FM Transmitter for iPod (White) Review

Griffin Technology iTrip FM Transmitter for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review applies to the following products:
Griffin 9781-TRP30BK iTrip FM Transmitter with Dock Connector for iPod (Black)
Griffin Technology 9500-TRIPDA iTrip LCD/FM Transmitter with Dock Connector for iPod

This transmitter works quite well if you understand its limitations.

First of all, it broadcasts on the FM band so don't expect the sound to be better than your FM radio.Secondly, it's designed to be small and portable, so it's not going to have a very powerful transmitter built in, not to mention there are probably FCC rules regarding how few watts a personal device like this is allowed to transmit (in order to prevent interference with other electronics).

If your car doesn't have an alternate method of connecting an iPod (such as via a cassette adapter, line-in jack, etc.), and you don't want to spend the money to upgrade your stereo, this is a good, cheap solution to listen to your iPod in your car.

The product description (on Griffin's web page, the product packaging, and Amazon) mistakenly states that the iTrip works with frequencies ranging from 88.1 to 107.9MHz.It's actually designed to broadcast from 87.9 to 107.9MHz.I was happy to discover that my unit was tuned to 87.9MHz out of the package, which is a barely used fringe frequency in my area, making it ideal for FM transmitters.I just had to change it from DX (mono) to LX (stereo) mode and I was in business.

The controls are extremely simple and user friendly.Changing the broadcast frequency is easy as moving the toggle switch on the side of the unit up and down.Changing it from DX to LX involves pressing the toggle switch for about 3 seconds, then toggling between the two modes, and pressing the switch again to save the setting.

The built-in mini-USB charging port is a very smart feature. It allows you to use the same charger for many popular cell phones (MOTORAZR, Blackberry, etc.) and GPS devices, reducing the need to carry around a proprietary charger just for your iPod.And unlike the iTrip Auto, you only charge when you want to, instead of letting it charge all the time (and possibly using up unnecessary charge cycles). Also, some people have reported interference when using car powered transmitters, especially if they don't have a noise suppressor installed in their stereo, so allowing the iTrip Dock to use the power from the iPod gives additional flexibility in that regard.

My iTrip Dock works pretty well if I leave it in the cup holder of my car, which is about a foot away from the stereo.I may hear a little interference if I shift it around, but for the most part it provides a satisfactory performance, and I can't really complain considering the price and convenience.

By the way, Griffin has a web-based station finder application called SmartScan that tells you the clearest frequencies in your area.Just google "griffin smartscan" and give it a try if you have problems finding usable frequencies.Good luck!

UPDATE: Be aware that the iTrip does not work well in cold temperatures.I left mine in a car overnight during a cold spell, and it did not work well (low volume and increased susceptible to interference) until the ambient air temperature warmed up.So try not to leave it in your car if you park outside in the cold.

This little FM modulator actually works well, even in an area with crowded radio spectrum such as San Francisco. Unlike some other modulators by Monster, Belkin, and Griffin, the AFT 100 lets you select ANY frequency, not one of a few factory presets. I simply found an empty frequency on my radio, adjusted the AFT 100 to match, and it sounds great, with no discernable noise or interference. Auto power-off is a nice feature, since I tuck my unit out-of-sight in the armrest.

I don't usually write reviews, but I was so pleased with this product that I had to do it. I have owned several FM transmitters (Griffin, Belkin) and always found them to be very annoying with having to change channels constantly. With this one I drove all the way across New York State and never changed the channel once. There was very little hissing and interference. Moreover, the holder is very handy and adjusts to many different sized ipods. I have a Touch, I didn't try it on other kinds. Great product! Its front is the same size a regular car stereo, so big to fit anywere
Thus, it don't autoconect at all
Even the recording function only records in memory, so if you want to move the recording to computer, you'll have to play on it's own speakers and record with an external recording device
The battery also dont last more than few minutes by itself, probably it's an old stock, with deffective parts

The transmission is terrible, you can barely hear the music over the static. The scanning function doesn't even pick the best of the static stations, when you are lucky it is only .1 or .2 off from a decent station, but about half the time there is no transmission at all. Also the dial, which initially looks fancy and fun, is very awkward to manipulate while driving. So essentially this is a very expensive ipod charger for when you are on the go.

As someone else already noted, there are better methods of listening to your MP3 player in your car, such as through the tape transmitter. For those of us who don't have it, though, this is a sufficiently apt substitute.

First, whoever said that there are 8 presets must be thinking of some other device. You only have 3 presets here, but you define them yourself from the whole FM range, an you can always deviate from them. Hence, this thing has an advantage over, say, the iTrip because you can easily surf between three stations if the one you're listening to now starts getting static.

Second, I find it powerful enough in most situations. I live in Boston, and drive around it often enough. Downtown, most stations will give you a small amount of interference, and that is probably the best you will get. Drive around the suburbs, though, and you can easily find around 3 stations that will play almost as well as your CD player in terms of quality.

The secret to this is to set your iPod volume somewhere around the middle to upper two-thirds of its capacity. If you set it to the maximum, all bass lines will be completely distorted. Set it to the middle, though, and you'll have rather crisp audio, although you will have to compensate for the lost volume by turning up the car radio. Hardly anything to complain about, though.

My two complaints with this device are these:

First, the marked price is far too high. You can find a much cheaper device on eBay, or even in the Amazon marketplace. I paid around $20 for it, plus delivery.

Second, some types of music sound distorted even at medium volumes on a lot of the stations. I have in mind the Waltz of the Snowflakes from the Nutcracker when I write this. Beside it, just about every song I played sounded clean, although sometimes a given station would encounter pockets of interference.

Given that a more powerful transmitter would probably end up messing up the radio reception of neighboring cars, I'm prone to think that this is an inherent problem to all FM transmitters. I think this is one of the better ones, though, because of its preset options, its ability to scan the whole FM range, the fact that it doesn't drain your iPod's battery, and the fact that you can manipulate your iPod volume on it for better performance. The iTrip can't do three of these. You will, of course, have to sit down in your car and look for usable stations manually, .2 by .2, but ultimately, and if you have no other option available, I think you will find this device to do a good job. Just do yourself a favor, and find a cheaper source.
