(More customer reviews)We needed a higher power interter to use in our RV when camping without shore power.We needed to power two laptop computers, charge cell phones and PDAs and run a small fan.This Cobra unit reviewed well so I ordered one from Amazon.It was delivered in just a few days (thanks Amazon). It has a solid feel to it, connectors are of good quality, and it is small enough not to be obtrusive in the confines of an RV.I used the cigarette lighter plug and put this on our dining table.The two AC plugs accommodated two AC adapters for laptops.As a bonus, there is a USB port on the Cobra that will supply 5 volts! So, I can charge my Blackberry simultaneously.What a delight!!The unit has an internal fan which only runs as needed.If I'm just charging a cell phone, then the fan does not run - but when I've got a load on - the fan runs and effectively cools the inverter.This is not a pure sine wave inverter but I've had no trouble at all using it with various laptops, pdas, fans, and cell phone chargers.I've not used it to power a TV or Radio (those could be more sensitive to interter noise).After a months use, I'm delighted with the inverter - it meets my needs completely.

(More customer reviews)Just before Hurricane Charley and his 2 sisters rubbed up against the Orlando area a couple years ago, I bought the Coleman 400 Watt Inverter. We lost our power for 5 days at a time.

Clamping this unit directly to the battery and closing the hood, I ran an extension cord into the house and plugged a 3-way into the end.We could run 3 12in. oscillating fans all night and sleep comfortably!

Most fans draw less than 1 amp per hour, so the draw on the battery is minimal.Just fire up the car (sitting in the AC) for a few minutes and the battery is topped off.

I went this route because the generator method has too many negatives for me: Theft or worse, fumes or worse, and the incessant noise. This can make your neighbors more than a little testy, especially if they have no power at all.And as always happens, the more you have the more you want.All we really needed was a way to cool off and cold drinks.The cooling off problem resolved, we turned to cooling food and drinks.This is easy.Freeze clean gallon milk jugs with drinkable water. As it melts, you've got cold water! (Unlike tornadoes, hurricanes let you know they are coming; you have time to prepare.) All of your cold stuff will be cold already so the ice chest and frozen water will work fine for a good many days. 2 ice chests lets you go get more stuff without it thawing or melting before you get back home.We use a Coleman stove outside for cooking and making coffee.The coffee became a huge hit with the neighbors!We use battery operated lights instead of candles.Candles are a no no!Not much light, unwanted heat and a real fire hazard.Candles are for romance. A boom box will run forever on batteries as long as you don't use the cd or cassette player. and lastly, we have a small battery operated TV. We are news junkies.

Here's how to figure how many amps you are drawing off your car battery:
Amps X Volts(120)= Watts.Examples: .5amps X 120volts = 60 Watts.3amps X 120volts = 360 Watts. That's the limit for this 400 Watt Inverter, so forget your big ticket items.

(More customer reviews)Pros: very compact and portable; able to usually power my HP laptop; long'ish power cord; easy to use.
Cons: 1) It has a little cooling fan that is slightly noisy and runs almost continuously. Highway road noise mostly masks the noise. 2) Sometimes the inverter would blink a red light and temporarily suspend power output. Maybe it was too hot powering my HP laptop. According to kill-o-watt, my laptop usually draws only about 25 watts, or about 40 watts when also recharging the battery. 3) It sometimes smells a little bit like burnt plastic.

Overall, I am satisfied with this inverter for the money spent. If I had to buy another, I'd probably get something with a little more power. However, my Honda Civic has a limit of 120 watts for DC accessories. The 175 watt inverter I used to have blew the fuse. Check your auto owner's manual for the power limit before you buy.

(More customer reviews)This is a slick, useful product that does just what it says it will do.I used to work at Radioshack, and we sold a lot of these, and they were hardly ever returned, so I got one for myself.I use it to charge my cellphone (with the house charger) and my laptop while I'm traveling.It is much more quiet than other inverters, has a big, blue indicator light to show when it is working, and is slim enough to slip under a seat, or even between the center console and a seat (where I have mine).It says "100 watts", but that is only the peak output.Continuous output is only 80 watts, so be sure to check that what you are using it for is 80 or less.It is great for battery charging, but don't even think of running a vacuum or a power tool, that isn't what it is intended for.

Whistler PI-400W 400 Watt Power Inverter Review

(More customer reviews)I had previously purchased a Xantrex 851-400 inverter to run in conjunction with a marine battery so as to power lights for my jewelry booth at Art Fairs. I was very happy with it but when I decided to expand my use of lights, necessitating a second battery and a second inverter, for whatever reason I decided to try the Whistler PI-400W and save a whopping $7.55. Big mistake. The Xantrex will operate flawlessly for 2 days sucking enough juice out of that marine battery to operate 75 watts of CFL bulbs for 8-10 hours each day. The Whistler worked well for the first day but kick off after 2 hours of the second. The first time that it happened I rationalized that perhaps I hadn't fully charged the second marine battery but after making sure to test it again with both batteries on successive weekends, I got the same result both times. The moral of the story is that Amazon does a great job of refunding your money during the first 30 days and don't get cheap when making your purchase. If you find a product that does the job well that you need it to do, pay the man!

(More customer reviews)I needed an inverter to charge my laptop and cell phone in the car on road trips, and this one fit the bill nicely.I have tested it out in the car with my computer plugged in, and it works fine.It powered my computer and supplied plenty of current to charge the battery while I was using it.
This thing is smart.If you try to run it off the 12V accessory outlet in your car without running the engine, the inverter lets out a constant beep telling you that you're going to run down your battery if you continue.According to the manual, this beep could also mean that the voltage dropped below 11.0V.I didn't know which it was in my particular case, but as soon as I started the engine, the squeal stopped and it was happy to charge my computer.
The ground fault interruptor, overpower and underpower warnings, battery drain warnings, auto shut-off, the 12V DC pass-through, and the option to hook the inverter directly to your battery are all very very useful features on a solid product.Well worth the reasonable price you pay!

A word of warning: if you need an inverter, make SURE you look at the amperage needed to power whatever it is you want to plug in!This one supplies 1.74 amps, which is more than enough for most laptops, game consoles, cell phones, and portable TVs, but ALWAYS double check and make sure.If you want to plug in a small fridge, for example, check the power requirements to make sure this thing can supply enough current!You'll save yourself a lot of frustration if you are certain of what you are buying.

I highly recommend this inverter!It's worth every penny, and it feels and performs like a much more expensive unit.

(More customer reviews)This item works as advertised, but it is a modified sine wave inverter.If you are planning on using it to charge cordless tool batteries---don't.The owners manual contains a caution about using with cordless tool chargers (such as Dewalt).Do a quick Internet search on "cordless tools" and "modified sine wave inverter" to confirm whether your tool is effected.Some other items that may not work well are appliances with clocks, microwaves, etc.Be sure you understand the limitations of a modified sine wave inverter.
For those smaller appliances that will run on modified sine wave, this item works well.

(More customer reviews)I bought one of these at Walmart for around $15 when I couldn't find my no-name inverters.This one has worked great, I take it on every plane trip I go on.Normally I use this to power my laptop ($15 for an inverter is better than 50-100 for a laptop-specific DC power adapter, if you can even find one).One time when the battery was low, the inverter kept shutting itself off.It would work for a few seconds, then quit until I unplugged + plugged it back in.My theory is that when the laptop battery was extremely low, the power adapter was drawing more wattage than this little inverter could handle.Other than that one time, I've had no problems.Has a little fan noise, normally not noticeable.Definitely recommended, nicer (better built) than the no-name inverters I've tried.

(More customer reviews)I just opened the package and haven't used this thing yet - so I can't comment on functionality - but I wanted to let others know that this unit DOES come with a cigarette lighter plug (as well as a set of alligator clips) that you can attach to the screw posts.

I wasted a couple bucks on a separate cigarette lighter plug when I ordered because the product information says nothing about coming with the cigarette lighter plug.

Oh - There is also a sticker on the cigarette lighter cable warning not to draw more than 150 watts when using it plugged into a lighter socket (use the alligator clips or your own custom wires to connect straight to the battery for full power)

Wagan Smart AC 120 Watt USB Power Inverter Review

(More customer reviews)This is a very small DC > AC inverter than converts 12V DC from your car to 120V AC.The removable power cord is a good idea and it has a handy 5V USB plug on the side for charging small USB devices.

It's smaller than a deck of cards but they've overrated it's power capacity by quite a bit.It doesn't have enough cooling capacity to prevent overheating of it's internal parts with even a small load, so it gets hot and shuts off.

I measured it's output with a quality Fluke TrueRMS voltmeter and the output looks ok at 117V AC which is close to a standard 120V household outlet.This is adequate to run most low power AC devices with no issues.

The 120 Watt load rating is overstated because it heats up to 100`F even before you plug in anything. Then it gets really hot if you connect anything that draws some power such as a laptop computer.I tried a Dell D830 laptop which requires 25 watts to run.The AC Inverter overheated and shutdown within 2 minutes while running a laptop.

I have a variety of test equipment and found that the inverter can handle 15 watts all day but 20 watts is the thermal limit.25 watts overloads it and it overheated to 190`F and shutdown in 2 minutes. It smelled like hot plastic burning.It's possible another inverter of the same model may perform better but that is not likely.

This design has marginal internal cooling capacity so it appears limited to about 20 watts max.The tiny 3/4" built-in fan is quiet at first and it gets louder as the inverter heats up.The fan has a high pitched whine and is really too small.The fan noise may be ok in a moving automobile as it would be drowned out by road noise.

If they changed the design to include a real aluminum heatsink with some mass to it that would increase the power handling a lot.A bigger 2" fan would have worked also.

There is no "off" button.
It has a power LED to indicate that it's on.
The overtemp shutdown feature works.
The fan is thermally regulated, and ends up running all the time.
The low battery feature works and it will shut off if the input voltage gets below 10.3V DC.
It automatically turns back on when the voltage comes back up to 12V.
Tiny high speeed fans typically don't have a long lifespan.

Technical data:
I measured a 400mA current draw with the unit idling with nothing plugged in.A 25 watt load draws 2 amps on the 12V line which sounds about right. Be aware that if you try to run something that actually draws 120 watts (using an inverter that could handle it) a load that big may blow the fuse in your vehicle 12V outlet since they typically has a 10-15 amps fuse.10 amps X 12V = 120 watts, for example.

Conclusion:
This is a really tiny voltage inverter. If you plan to only run small equipment like a AA battery charger, camera, or MP3 player that needs 5 to 10 watts then it should work ok for you.

I am going to return mine in favor of a physically larger inverter with some mass to keep it cool and one that can really handle 50 watts or more.A quality unit rated for 50 watts would be much better than a tiny, plastic, overrated 120 Watt one.

The plug tag and inverter label read up to 80 watts while the manual states up to 100 watts for the plug. The heavier gauge alligator clip cables are for higher wattage applications or you may blow your power port fuse. The alligator clips connect directly to the battery. If you permanently hardwire the inverter buy 6 gauge wire with a 50 amp fuse up to 6 feet long or 4 gauge wire over 6 feet.Both included cables are 3 feet (91 cm) long. Remember, Volts x Amps = Watts. The inverter draws 512 watts when output is 400 watts according to the label.Output is a stepped modified sine wave and NOT sinusoidal.

When the inverter fan comes on it is noticeable like a radio between stations at moderate volume (took me some miles before figuring it was the inverter).The housing stayed cool at 85 watts.

The PowerSource will provide about 45 Watt Hours. It has a limit of 60 watts from the battery and 80 watts from the 12 volt input. It has a 100 Watt surge limit for a short time.

Translation: the run time depends on your computer and the existing charge level when you plug it in to the PowerSource.

If your laptop batteries are run down, the PowerSource probably will NOT operate it.
If you remove the batteries it may work. It may also work to charge with the laptop off.
If you run it with the 12 volt input it may operate your laptop.

The reason for this is; your laptop uses twice as much power to run if it charges the batteries at the same time.

It will work, if you plug the laptop into the PowerSource before you run down the batteries.

I tested my HP dual core laptop watching movies over the WIFI link. It ran 1 hour and 35 minutes on the PowerSource then 2 and a half hour on its own batteries. Same test, next day, same results.

This would be 4 hours on an airline flight. It will power a Zune or IPod for a long time.
The more powerful the laptop, the shorter the battery life. Your mileage may vary.

It includes a special plug that work on some airlines power jacks.

Many smart phones use a specially wired charger to charge from the wall and will only charge from a computer IF the computer has a data connection to the smart phone. A different USB cable will not help, unless it is wired special. A cheat that works on some Smart Phones is to plug it in then reboot the smart phone.

Its front is the same size a regular car stereo, so big to fit anywere
Thus, it don't autoconect at all
Even the recording function only records in memory, so if you want to move the recording to computer, you'll have to play on it's own speakers and record with an external recording device
The battery also dont last more than few minutes by itself, probably it's an old stock, with deffective parts
This goes to garbage, and the good thing is it didn't cost much

(More customer reviews)We bought this to power our laptop and cell chargers while on a road trip to the Grand Canyon.This unit was compact and easily packed in with the laptop.It worked flawlessly and saved our sanity by giving the kids power to "entertain" for some of the less senic drive times.The only minor complaint is the cooling fan, it just added a little white noise noticable at less than cruising speeds.On the plus side it also reminded us that it was sucking power when we would shut down the car.Overall we are very pleased with this purchase.
