(More customer reviews)We needed a higher power interter to use in our RV when camping without shore power.We needed to power two laptop computers, charge cell phones and PDAs and run a small fan.This Cobra unit reviewed well so I ordered one from Amazon.It was delivered in just a few days (thanks Amazon). It has a solid feel to it, connectors are of good quality, and it is small enough not to be obtrusive in the confines of an RV.I used the cigarette lighter plug and put this on our dining table.The two AC plugs accommodated two AC adapters for laptops.As a bonus, there is a USB port on the Cobra that will supply 5 volts! So, I can charge my Blackberry simultaneously.What a delight!!The unit has an internal fan which only runs as needed.If I'm just charging a cell phone, then the fan does not run - but when I've got a load on - the fan runs and effectively cools the inverter.This is not a pure sine wave inverter but I've had no trouble at all using it with various laptops, pdas, fans, and cell phone chargers.I've not used it to power a TV or Radio (those could be more sensitive to interter noise).After a months use, I'm delighted with the inverter - it meets my needs completely.

(More customer reviews)This is a slick, useful product that does just what it says it will do.I used to work at Radioshack, and we sold a lot of these, and they were hardly ever returned, so I got one for myself.I use it to charge my cellphone (with the house charger) and my laptop while I'm traveling.It is much more quiet than other inverters, has a big, blue indicator light to show when it is working, and is slim enough to slip under a seat, or even between the center console and a seat (where I have mine).It says "100 watts", but that is only the peak output.Continuous output is only 80 watts, so be sure to check that what you are using it for is 80 or less.It is great for battery charging, but don't even think of running a vacuum or a power tool, that isn't what it is intended for.

Whistler PI-400W 400 Watt Power Inverter Review

(More customer reviews)I had previously purchased a Xantrex 851-400 inverter to run in conjunction with a marine battery so as to power lights for my jewelry booth at Art Fairs. I was very happy with it but when I decided to expand my use of lights, necessitating a second battery and a second inverter, for whatever reason I decided to try the Whistler PI-400W and save a whopping $7.55. Big mistake. The Xantrex will operate flawlessly for 2 days sucking enough juice out of that marine battery to operate 75 watts of CFL bulbs for 8-10 hours each day. The Whistler worked well for the first day but kick off after 2 hours of the second. The first time that it happened I rationalized that perhaps I hadn't fully charged the second marine battery but after making sure to test it again with both batteries on successive weekends, I got the same result both times. The moral of the story is that Amazon does a great job of refunding your money during the first 30 days and don't get cheap when making your purchase. If you find a product that does the job well that you need it to do, pay the man!

(More customer reviews)Ok, I give it 5 stars although out of four I bought, two would not charge properly, but at 3.99 it was worth the extra effort to get them going.Here is the problem with some of these, the batteries have been sitting a while, so after you charge it for a few minutes, some of these may show they are charged, even though they are not.The batteries need to be cycled in these and all of mine have come back to life.Here is what you can do to help bring them back...

1) Charge unit until LED goes green (with a battery that needs to be cycled, it may show its charged after a few minutes.With battery that is in good shape and being dead, it should take around 4 hours to charge)
2) Unplug charger and turn on unit.It may go dead after a few minutes, thats OK.After it shuts itself off, wait 10 minutes.

Repeat the steps above and it should come back to life.The most I repeated the above steps were 4 times before it accepted a full charge, and all mine work now.Hope this helps someone if theirs does not take a proper charge...

Wagan Smart AC 120 Watt USB Power Inverter Review

(More customer reviews)This is a very small DC > AC inverter than converts 12V DC from your car to 120V AC.The removable power cord is a good idea and it has a handy 5V USB plug on the side for charging small USB devices.

It's smaller than a deck of cards but they've overrated it's power capacity by quite a bit.It doesn't have enough cooling capacity to prevent overheating of it's internal parts with even a small load, so it gets hot and shuts off.

I measured it's output with a quality Fluke TrueRMS voltmeter and the output looks ok at 117V AC which is close to a standard 120V household outlet.This is adequate to run most low power AC devices with no issues.

The 120 Watt load rating is overstated because it heats up to 100`F even before you plug in anything. Then it gets really hot if you connect anything that draws some power such as a laptop computer.I tried a Dell D830 laptop which requires 25 watts to run.The AC Inverter overheated and shutdown within 2 minutes while running a laptop.

I have a variety of test equipment and found that the inverter can handle 15 watts all day but 20 watts is the thermal limit.25 watts overloads it and it overheated to 190`F and shutdown in 2 minutes. It smelled like hot plastic burning.It's possible another inverter of the same model may perform better but that is not likely.

This design has marginal internal cooling capacity so it appears limited to about 20 watts max.The tiny 3/4" built-in fan is quiet at first and it gets louder as the inverter heats up.The fan has a high pitched whine and is really too small.The fan noise may be ok in a moving automobile as it would be drowned out by road noise.

If they changed the design to include a real aluminum heatsink with some mass to it that would increase the power handling a lot.A bigger 2" fan would have worked also.

There is no "off" button.
It has a power LED to indicate that it's on.
The overtemp shutdown feature works.
The fan is thermally regulated, and ends up running all the time.
The low battery feature works and it will shut off if the input voltage gets below 10.3V DC.
It automatically turns back on when the voltage comes back up to 12V.
Tiny high speeed fans typically don't have a long lifespan.

Technical data:
I measured a 400mA current draw with the unit idling with nothing plugged in.A 25 watt load draws 2 amps on the 12V line which sounds about right. Be aware that if you try to run something that actually draws 120 watts (using an inverter that could handle it) a load that big may blow the fuse in your vehicle 12V outlet since they typically has a 10-15 amps fuse.10 amps X 12V = 120 watts, for example.

Conclusion:
This is a really tiny voltage inverter. If you plan to only run small equipment like a AA battery charger, camera, or MP3 player that needs 5 to 10 watts then it should work ok for you.

I am going to return mine in favor of a physically larger inverter with some mass to keep it cool and one that can really handle 50 watts or more.A quality unit rated for 50 watts would be much better than a tiny, plastic, overrated 120 Watt one.

Targus PAPWR005U Mobile Power Inverter Review

(More customer reviews)I successfully used the Targus PAPWR005U power inverter on a 400+ mile trip to power my Mac PowerBook G4 (to watch DVDs) with the kids. Unfortunately it only made the one trip. The next week, on another 400+ mi car ride, the inverter started beeping constantly and then went into shutdown mode, I'm assuming because it was drawing too much power and was overheating. At 90 Watts, the power output matched the power draw from the Mac PowerBook, but didn't have enough umph to spare. I'd caution everyone to check the power rating on their laptop power bricks first before using it with a power inverter. Get an inverter that is at least 1.5-2x the power rating of the device you want to use.

This design fits great in one of the center cup holders and plugs in the lighter socket nearby. Has a USB plug to charge your Iphone or Ipod, TWO AC outlets, and a built-in lighter plug so you can still use another 12volt device without having to unplug the inverter. It isn't completely silent, but at 200 watts the fan is necessary. I was a little disappointed in how the fan was attached inside the vent opening - it pushed into the housing with very little pressure - had to take the housing apart to re-attach it with some superglue.

(More customer reviews)This Belkin inverter is much louder than the 140 watt inverter (which is difficult to hear at all).You can easily drowned out the noise with your radio but the pitch was a little too high for me.
The 300 watt unit is only a little bigger with a second outlet than the 140 watt inverter.It comes with an automotive type fuse (30 amp) which does seem to be very useful if your car lighter fuse is 10 or 15 amp.

Cobra CPI-150 Micro Port 150 Watt Power Inverter (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great product.It is perfect in (almost) every way.Smallest 150 watt inverter around.Very quiet.Works both in the car and on a plane.Has both a 3-prong AC and USB powerpoints.It shines particularly well verses the 'big-black' inverters for traveling for 3 reasons.1) Again, it is so quiet that more often than not you can't even hear it; 2) when you re-start the ignition on your car it properly resets itself and keeps providing power (unlike the 'big-black' units which are universally dumb and unpower themselves); 3) if your car's battery voltage drops (because it is cold...older battery...or you are not running the engine) this unit tends to keep working whereas most others sense the voltage drop and quit working.The only minor quirk with it is that the silver-tipped spring that you insert into the lighter socket is overly sprung and in some cars you need to occasionally re-push it into the lighter.An annoyance but not a deal breaker.Overall I cannot recommend this enough.The only other unit that comes close is the Xantrex 175 watt unit (#813-0291).It has all of the above qualities except that the airline portion of the adapter would not seperate correctly from the cigarette portion of its cord.This resulted in the unit's tip being slightly loose at the plastic seem of the cigarette portion of the adapter.

(More customer reviews)I thought this power supply did better than I expected.Running a Dell D610 under normal use, I got about 50 minutes with.Given that it has 4Mah of storage, that is better than I could have hoped for.I would caution anyone that thinks they should get 9 hours of computer battery life to read the specs and understand what the power requirements of a computer are. There isn't an easily portable product on the market that can do that. A gas generator would but they don't allow those on airplane for some reason???All kidding aside, one issue that anyone using this with a laptop should realize is that it won't automatically kick the computer into an energy saving mode like it does when you switch to your internal battery so the power draw will be higher and the battery won't last as long even though it is rated pretty close to the same capacity as a normal laptop battery.Anyway, it does well charging my gadgets which is the real reason I bought it anyway.It is worth spending the extra money on this instead of the smaller one because it will give a full charge to the palm, camera battery and the cell phone at the same time.

(More customer reviews)Bought this for extended camping trips.We frequently find ourselves at events that require camping out, and with limited or no electrical.I wanted something that could supply power to our wide variety of gadgets that we typically need as a modern family.

Put the Powerpack to the test on a full week trip recently.Through the whole week, it was used for a number of purposes.Including, recharging cell phones, camera batteries, various media devices.It also was used to power a compressor to air up 3 different air mattress (including a queen), and refill them as needed.It also ran a hair straightener and blow dryer a few times.And it was used to run a breathing treatment machine for a friends asthma at least once a day.Might have been used for other things.

The results.The Powerpack lasted through day 5 of a 7 day trip,but we had brought along a lawn battery to attach as a backup.It was simple to setup, and the provided the power we needed for the last 2 days. The main battery lasted about as long as I thought it would, so I was satisified throughout.

The reasons why it didn't get 5 stars.Two reasons, and both kinda minor.One, no way to turn off the clock.I know its not much of a drain on a battery this size, but I would prefer to maximize my usuage.And two, the power meter is no super accurate.It showed 90% power on Day 4, 70% power on day 5, only to be out of power come the morning of day 6.

To be fair though, a few things where plugged into it overnight from day 5 to 6.Those items where low power or turned off.So its hard to say if they caused the drain.Maybe if they hadn't been plugged in, the main battery would have lasted all week.

Overall, very happy with the purchase.
