Xantrex 852-1840 XPower Powerpack 300 Plus Portable Backup Power Source Review

I followed the charging instructions for the Power Pack 300 C. After 48 hours of AC charging, the light was still amber instead of green. The manual said, if the light was amber, wait 15 mins and press a button on the unit that would reveal the charging level. I did this and the unit said it was fully charged. The Power Pack ran a 40 watt table lamp for 4 hours as promissed!
However the next time I charged the system the same thing happened. The light was Amber. After waiting 30 mins I pressed the button on the unit but this time it registered "RED". I moved the unit to another outlet and charged it for another 48 hours. Same Result (RED)! I plugged in the 40 watt table lamp and it lasted only 20 mins.
I love the idea Xantrex had for a portable electronic generator, however their execution came up a little short on this one. The unit is going back!

This item works as advertised, but it is a modified sine wave inverter. If you are planning on using it to charge cordless tool batteries---don't.The owners manual contains a caution about using with cordless tool chargers (such as Dewalt).Do a quick Internet search on "cordless tools" and "modified sine wave inverter" to confirm whether your tool is effected. Some other items that may not work well are appliances with clocks, microwaves, etc.Be sure you understand the limitations of a modified sine wave inverter.
For those smaller appliances that will run on modified sine wave, this item works well.

Duracell Powerpack 450 Jumpstarter with Built-In 150 PSI Air Compressor Review

Duracell Powerpack 450 Jumpstarter with Built-In 150 PSI Air Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Works fine. It comes with 1/2 charge. Don't use it. Follow the instructions and give it that first long charge and it will work fine. I am in the country so a low tire can become a real issue. I just went out with the machine and topped off a low tire no problem. I had to try the electric because it goes out here from time to time. I plugged in a lamp and it ran for 6hrs. and 15 mins. And I am guessing it will run heat tape for 10 hrs or more. Important when you lose power at 10 below. And I feel confident if I have a low car battery this will work as advertised. Just to be able to get a car started at 5 in the morning and not be late for work is worth the purchase price. And the real reason I wanted it was for in the spring and during the summer for the lawn tractor. Every year at least one tire is low. And every year I get at least one slow leak 5 mins. before being done. This year I am ready.

Sunforce 11240 1000-Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter with Remote Control Review

Sunforce 11240 1000-Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter with Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this off Amazon a month or two ago. I was looking for an inexpensive pure sine wave inverter to replace my Duracell (Xantrex) modified sine wave inverter. I was expecting to have issues from the get go (due to the cheap price!) but this inverter is working out quite nicely. I have it hooked up to 4 Trojan T-105 batteries which is charged up with an 85 watt Kyocera solar panel and Xantrex C35 charge controller.

Being pure sine wave, I can run anything now that my old modified sine couldn't. No more annoying buzzing sounds from CFL's or TV's. certain appliances that wouldn't power up on the old inverter now work flawlessly. Some things I run on the Sunforce: Samsung 22" LCD TV, CFL's of all sizes, Playstation 2, battery chargers, laptops, electric cooler.

I haven't tripped the over current protection yet at all, not even when using items that typically surge, such as a large power drill.

No fan issues like the other review mentioned.. in fact I haven't heard it come on at all yet; then again it's winter time here in Missouri so I assume it truly is thermal controlled.

The remote keychain that was provided with the unit works great. Since I'm doing the electrical work on our new cabin, I can turn off and on when working on the electrical. Then turn it off when we leave for the week.

The only issue I've had so far is once I came back on the weekend and the inverter turned itself back on sometime during the week. This normally wouldn't be a big issue except we're limited on battery capacity and can be a nuisance if kept happening. This has only happened the one time so no biggie.

The LCD readout on the front of the inverter is a nice feature, more expensive inverters don't have this by default, though I rarely look at it.

I would like to determine how much power the inverter uses when it's powered on and in idle mode. The documentation doesn't mention this anywhere and would expect that would be a major selling point. (or, disadvantage if it's too much of a power draw). I don't have an amp meter to test what it is, if you find out please post a review.

The only other downsides is:

1) this inverter has no permanent mounting brackets. only rubber feet on the bottom. luckily the thick DC cabling keeps it well secured within the battery box.

2) the DC hookups are HAND TIGHTEN only. This can be an issue if you, like me, use the proper gauge wiring. in my case I'm using 6 gauge, which is actually borderline of being too small but the batteries are close by. I ended up using pliers to tighten the hand lugs. With thicker wiring, I imagine this would be a huge pain.

PROS:
inexpensive! I noticed the price just went up though :(
LCD readout on front panel
Keychain remote, I haven't seen any other inverters include this with the inverter itself

CONS:
no mounting brackets? I'm sure you could finagle some aluminum straps around it, instead.
hand tightened DC connections
no mention of idle power usage.

Xantrex Powerpack 600 Watt Jumpstarter, Power Inverter and Backup Power Source Review

Xantrex Powerpack 600 Watt Jumpstarter, Power Inverter and Backup Power Source
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After spending my vacation in Florida during hurricane Wilma, I learned the value of being prepared for a prolonged power outage. This unit would have been just the thing.

This is essentially a big 12 volt battery and an inverter that produces 120v AC from the battery. While this unit won't power a heater or an air conditioner, it can power a small fan overnight so you can sleep. It can also charge your cell phone and laptop. (After all, your laptop's DVD player might be your only entertainment.) The XPower can power a lamp so you can read or play cards, or you can watch a small TV for a few hours. You can plug in just about anything so long as the total number of watts drawn is 480 or less. (The 600 watt rating is a 5 minute rating, you can only draw 480 watts continuously.)Keep in mind, if you do pull 480 watts, you'll only get 15 minutes of run time. It's best to think of the 600HD as a way to keep small essentials going.

There's an emergency light built-in. if you place the unit so the light bounces off a near-by wall, it makes a nice low-level room light. With the backside facing you, you see the built-in clock radio. It's not hi-fi, but it's not horrible, it has good volume and it can wake you in the morning. There's also a 12v outlet and a connector for attaching the supplied jumper cables.

You do have to be mindful of the number of watts you pull from the unit if you want the battery to last. It's easy to know how many watts you're drawing because the unit tells you on it's digital display. It's a good thing you can charge the XPower from a car cigarette lighter. During my adventure in Wilma's wake, I would have used the XPower by night and charged it in the car while driving during the day. The digital display also shows the percentage of charge left in the battery.

The best thing to have during a prolonged power outage is a gas generator. But generators require periodic maintenance. And you have to store fresh gas and remember to change the gas periodically. With the HD600, you just find an out-of-the-way corner, plug in the AC charger and forget all about it until the lights go out.

The XPower has a big 28 amp-hour battery which is good for capacity, but makes the unit heavy, almost 30 pounds, so you won't want to carry it very far. Xantrex makes smaller units, but I think the 600 is the best compromise between capacity and portability. The XPower's construction is robust and it looks like it could take some hard knocks.

Duracell Powersource Mobile 100 Review

Duracell Powersource Mobile 100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some people don't know the details about power supplies like this. This one requires a long answer.

The PowerSource will provide about 45 Watt Hours. It has a limit of 60 watts from the battery and 80 watts from the 12 volt input. It has a 100 Watt surge limit for a short time.

Translation: the run time depends on your computer and the existing charge level when you plug it in to the PowerSource.

If your laptop batteries are run down, the PowerSource probably will NOT operate it.
If you remove the batteries it may work. It may also work to charge with the laptop off.
If you run it with the 12 volt input it may operate your laptop.

The reason for this is; your laptop uses twice as much power to run if it charges the batteries at the same time.

It will work, if you plug the laptop into the PowerSource before you run down the batteries.

I tested my HP dual core laptop watching movies over the WIFI link. It ran 1 hour and 35 minutes on the PowerSource then 2 and a half hour on its own batteries. Same test, next day, same results.

This would be 4 hours on an airline flight. It will power a Zune or IPod for a long time.
The more powerful the laptop, the shorter the battery life. Your mileage may vary.

It includes a special plug that work on some airlines power jacks.

Many smart phones use a specially wired charger to charge from the wall and will only charge from a computer IF the computer has a data connection to the smart phone. A different USB cable will not help, unless it is wired special. A cheat that works on some Smart Phones is to plug it in then reboot the smart phone.

I recommend it.

This powerpack pretty much works as advertised. The coolest thing is the builtin 400 Watt inverter which allows you plug in almost any AC powered device.Great for emergency power or just portable camping power!Unit charges quickly using the supplied DC adapter or in about a day using the supplied AC adapter.
The only drawback is that the builtin air compressor isn't fan cooled so it can only operate about 10-15 minutes at a time before it over heats and air flow could be higher.Another option would be to plug in a high flow, heavy duty air compressor into the builtin 12V outlet or inverter.

DEWALT DC515K 1/2 Gallon 18-Volt NiCd Cordless Wet/Dry Vac Review

DEWALT DC515K 1/2 Gallon 18-Volt NiCd Cordless Wet/Dry Vac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace a truly crappy Shark rechargeable vacuum. The DeWalt was one of four that I had decided on (the other three being the B&D PHV1800, Eureka 71A, and B&D CHV1500 in descending order of price). I ultimately chose the DeWalt because it uses a standard DeWalt power tool battery, has a washable filter, and was the only wet/dry vacuum of my selections.

The box contains the vacuum itself, rechargeable battery, fast charger (will charge a completely flat battery in about an hour), and a thin but complete owner's manual.

The DeWalt's design is all business. It's about the size of two irons or half a shoe box. The top has a very grippy rubberized handle that's set above a large (but not stiff) responsive power switch. It's very easy to turn the vacuum on and off with one hand and very difficult to do so accidentally. A plastic vacuum hose runs from the back of the unit over the top (the handle) to the vacuum nozzle on the front of the unit. You can easily pull the hose out of the nozzle to get into smaller crevices; put the hose back in and it's a normal hand vacuum. Underneath, in the back you've got a black plastic debris bin that's held in place with a beefy (but, again, not too stiff) latch. In front of that is the standard DeWalt battery pack.

Although it's one of the heavier vacuums out there, the weight is well balanced. You can easily tilt the vacuum in all directions without feeling like you're fighting the weight of the battery and/or the vacuum motor. You can vacuum vertical surfaces just as easily as horizontal ones. You CAN use the vacuum vertically if there's water in the collection bin; the bin seals tightly enough to the base that leakage isn't a problem. However, having too much water in there could make it splash into the motor assembly. So the moral is: If you've got water in the collection bin, empty it out before doing anything vertical (or hold the vacuum horizontal and use the detachable hose).

So, how well does it work? Quite well, in fact. The motor is very powerful and was able to easily pick up all manner of bits that I threw at it including drywall dust, small finishing nails, screw anchors, and cat hair from a wood floor. It also did an excellent job removing cat hair from upholstery despite its lack of a power brush or upholstery comb. In the car, it easily picked up all the sand, dirt, pebbles and occasional penny without any complaints, including bits that were embedded in a damp carpeted floor mat.

Emptying the bin is simplicity itself and takes less than five seconds to complete. The filter seems to be doing an excellent job so far; even with a bin full of drywall dust, there's no "cloud" when you turn the vacuum on again. I haven't yet needed to clean the filter but it's easily removable and is washable. (EDIT 03-24-08: I finally had to wash the filter. It lost about 70% of its suction after pulling up a buttload of spackle dust, so I removed and tapped the filter against the inside of a trash can. A HUGE cloud of dust was released. About a minute at the sink with a small stiff bristled scrub brush and the filter came clean. I let it dry overnight before reinstalling it; meanwhile I rinsed out the collection bin and cleaned up the unit itself. By morning it was back to its old self again, sucking up everything and scaring the cats.)

The battery lasts friggin' forever. Out of the box the battery had a partial charge on it that lasted about 20 minutes. After charging for about half an hour in the included charger I was able to vacuum pretty much every corner and edge in the house, plus my car, without losing any vacuum strength. A big selling point for me was that it uses standard DeWalt power tool batteries so finding replacements will be incredibly easy.

My only real issue with the vacuum is one that has been mentioned before: This vacuum is LOUD and does emit a power tool-like whine which some people can find annoying. I doubt it's any louder than my full-size vacuum cleaner but since it's held in your hand rather than being dragged on the floor, it's closer to your ears and therefore might sound louder. So far as 18v handheld vacuums I compared it against this one is about average in noise, and compared to all handheld vacuums I looked at this is definitely one of the louder ones. I therefore wouldn't consider this to be "bad design" but simply a consequence of a larger and more powerful motor. Even so, since there are other 18v handhelds out there which aren't as loud, I think DeWalt could have done a little something to quiet it down just a little more.

I also would have liked to have a transparent debris bin so that I could see how full it was. This feature exists on at least 2/3 of the handheld vacuums out there today. I recognize DeWalt's "yellow and black" design decision here probably overrode this as a possible feature.

The only other thing I would have liked to see on this vacuum is a few more accessories; namely, a shoulder strap (so you can walk around using the hose to clean things like window sills and such) and a few hose accessories like an upholstery brush or pinhole nozzle. Still, even with these minor shortcomings I'd definitely buy this one again.

I manage a field team and have to have my office in the truck.I used to try to have 12 volt adapters for all my gadgets.12 volt chargers are not usually smart chargers so if you leave your device plugged in beyond the battery's capacity it begins to cook and destroy its ability to hold a charge.Mobile device batteries are expensive, so you don't want to be replacing them unnecessarily. The 110 volt chargers are called smart chargers because they sense when the battery is at peak capacity and dials back to a maintenance level of input. At first I thought a converter would be too bulky but they can rest under a seat nicely or in my case under the drink tray. So there they are, all my adapters all plugged into two power strips with just the device end of the cords sticking up ready for easy access. The printer and laptop plugged into one power strip and everything else plugged into the other power strip. This way I can flip the rocker switch on the power strip not in use disconnecting it and its resident adapters while the other adapters are happily doing their jobs and avoid scuffling around on the floor of the truck trying to plug in the charger I need at the moment.(If you are going to be powering multiple adapters at once, you'll need to pay attention to the total wattage being used.)The added convenience of being able to plug in any transportable household appliance is just icing on the cake. Coffee anyone?(Don't be trying to power a 1000 watt microwave oven. Its an alternative power source for MOBILE battery powered products.)That said, it handles my printer and laptop simultaneously without stressing its capacity. With the Panasonic Toughbook CF29 laptop plugged in alone, the cooling fan doesn't even kick on in the inverter.

Note:The instruction book (yes I actually read them) said you shouldn't leave the converter plugged into your power port unattended as it can drain the car's battery even when the converter is turned off. From experience, I can tell you it only takes about an hour or a little more to deplete my truck's battery if the engine isn't running while this unit is powering my laptop, so...

Black & Decker PS400JRB Electromate 400 Plus Jump-Starter with Built-In Radio Review

Black & Decker PS400JRB Electromate 400 Plus Jump-Starter with Built-In Radio

I bought this for aux. power on my boat when I'm on the water away from shore power. I have two marine batteries on my boat, but I bought this product for emergency back-up while on the open water. Keep in mind that I only use this product down below in a constant dry area of the sailboat's cabin (away from water) for safety reasons.I really didn't buy it for the jump starter or the USB Port, but if needed, I will be glad to have them. Since I didn't buy it primarily for the jump starter, I was glad to see that the jumper cables were detachable when not in use. I selected this product based on three factors: price, power and options. I saw this same product at Wal-mart for a more expensive pricetag (plus tax). Also, the free shipping from Amazon was fantastic: it is rather heavy, so to get free shipping on such a heavy product was a plus . The features are great. I get two AC and two DC power outlets. Having the two power options (AC or DC) is awesome. When I'm out on my boat, I can plug in a portable DVD player, charge/power up my phone and portable VHF in emergencies, and listen to the radio or weatherband all at the same time! I've used the radio (which gets good reception) and the light (more of a narrow spotlight for finding close objects). It seems to hold a charge for day and overnight sailing trips (for my light uses). Oh, a small blower kicks on when the 120V AC switch is turned on and the 12V DC outlets are rated for 5A max. each. Overall, I am quitehappy with this product. I can also see it useful for road trips and camping trips too! Oh, I almost forgot...you will need to buy a grounded extension cord to charge it, or you can use the included 12V charger (but that seems like it may take a long time to get a full charge from a drained battery).

UPDATE: Now that Amazon.com does not ship this item from its' warehouse, you as a consumer ARE NOT eligible for free shipping. It may now be cheaper buying it at your local Wal-mart. Do your research before buying!

Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack 600 Jump Starter & Emergency Power Source with Radio Review

Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack 600 Jump Starter & Emergency Power Source with Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this for extended camping trips. We frequently find ourselves at events that require camping out, and with limited or no electrical.I wanted something that could supply power to our wide variety of gadgets that we typically need as a modern family.

Put the Powerpack to the test on a full week trip recently.Through the whole week, it was used for a number of purposes.Including, recharging cell phones, camera batteries, various media devices. It also was used to power a compressor to air up 3 different air mattress (including a queen), and refill them as needed. It also ran a hair straightener and blow dryer a few times. And it was used to run a breathing treatment machine for a friends asthma at least once a day.Might have been used for other things.

The results. The Powerpack lasted through day 5 of a 7 day trip, but we had brought along a lawn battery to attach as a backup. It was simple to setup, and the provided the power we needed for the last 2 days. The main battery lasted about as long as I thought it would, so I was satisified throughout.

The reasons why it didn't get 5 stars. Two reasons, and both kinda minor. One, no way to turn off the clock.I know its not much of a drain on a battery this size, but I would prefer to maximize my usuage. And two, the power meter is no super accurate. It showed 90% power on Day 4, 70% power on day 5, only to be out of power come the morning of day 6.

To be fair though, a few things where plugged into it overnight from day 5 to 6.Those items where low power or turned off.So its hard to say if they caused the drain.Maybe if they hadn't been plugged in, the main battery would have lasted all week.

Overall, very happy with the purchase.

Black & Decker StormStation All-In-One Rechargeable Power Source/Radio/Light #SS925 Review

Black & Decker StormStation All-In-One Rechargeable Power Source/Radio/Light #SS925
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the previous reviewers misunderstood the directions for the Storm Station. The Storm Station is designed to be left plugged in.

The confusion comes from the directions themselves. Here is what they say: NOTE: AFTER THE MAIN BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED, SWITCH THE MAIN POWER SWITCH TO THE OFF POSITION AND REMOVE THE AC ADAPTOR IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO USE THE STORM STATION RIGHT AWAY.ALWAYS REMOVE THE AC ADAPTOR DURING STORAGE, TRANSPORTATION OR DURING PERIODS WHEN IT IS NOT BEING USED.

Apparently, though, that means that you should only unplug it if you don't want to use it as a backup power source (i.e. if you are simply storing it or transporting it).

A better clarification comes from the Black and Decker Web Page itself: To be prepared for a power outage, keep the Storm Station plugged into an electrical outlet to maintain 100 percent of its charge. That way when the power goes out the Storm Station will have all of its battery power to help you during a power outage.

So leave it plugged in!I got mine on Christmas Eve and we had a power outage on Christmas at 10pm.The kids were scared, and I simply grabbed the Storm Station (the Find Me Light had already activated), turned on the High Powered Room Light, lit a kerosene lantern, turned off the High Powered Room Light, and charged my cell phone. We used the rechargeable flashlight as well (the other flashlight by our bed died within 5 minutes).I then called the power company to report the outage. After the power came on an hour later, I plugged the Storm Station back in.I'm going to keep it plugged in and rely on it again!

I'm very happy with the Black and Decker Power Station. Thanks to my girls for giving it to me!

Black & Decker VEC026BD Electromate 400 Jump-Starter with Built-In Air Compressor Review

Black & Decker VEC026BD Electromate 400 Jump-Starter with Built-In Air Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just wanted to clear up some common misconceptions regarding these jump-start/inverter/inflator products. I personally own 3 different types from 400 watts to 1500 watts and have done tons of research on them. I guess you could call it an unusual hobby I have. I blame the manufacturers for over hyping these units or just choosing not to inform consumers of their limitations.

THESE UNITS ARE NOT AS POWERFUL AS YOU THINK! Most people seem to be very disappointed by the amount of "juice" these put out.

--FRESHLY CHARGED this item will probably run a small TV/DVD combo continuously for around 2.5 hours. That's it. Also, you can't run a coffee maker, hair drier, microwave, refrigerator or heavy duty power tool off this. It's just not designed for that kind of use. Buy this to run a small TV, fan or laptop for a few hours, or to charge your cell phone. That's all it's designed for.

--You probably won't be able to jump start an 8 cylinder engine with this especially if it's an older car or has a totally dead battery. These units are mostly for 4 and 6 cylinder engines. They just don't have large enough batteries in them to turn over a big V-8.

--The air compressor is little more than a toy. All of these units have tiny, noisy compressors in them that will take 20 to 30 minutes to inflate a single full size 16" tire that is totally flat. And you will completely kill the battery just doing one tire like that. Plus you may damage the compressor by running it that long continuously because they heat up so much during use. You're better off taking your tire to a gas station!

THE UNIT WILL SELF-DISCHARGE JUST BY SITTING IN YOUR CAR! It will lose about 10 - 20% of it's charge PER MONTH. The hotter it is outside the faster it will self-discharge. PLUS YOU WILL EVENTUALLY DESTROY THE INTERNAL BATTERY BY LEAVING IT IN A PROLONGED DISCHARGED STATE! You can easily kill this device permanently by a process known as sulfation, in as little as one year, if you don't keep it charged. (This is what happened to my first unit, a Xantrex Power-Plus 400. It cost me about 1/2 the original cost of the unit to replace the battery!)

- To prevent this you need to either bring it in the house and recharge it about once a month (who's going to remember to do this?), or keep it plugged into the cigarette lighter at all times. Some people claim this can overcharge the battery, but I disagree. Your cars built-in voltage regulator should keep the unit topped off without doing any damage to it. Plus you know you always have a freshly 100% charged unit ready to go.

-You should immediately recharge it after each use. If you use it for a jumpstart or even to recharge your cellphone you should recharge the unit within a day or two. This practice will prevent harmful sulfation and prolong the life of the unit.

-These don't last forever. Just like your car battery eventually needs to be replaced so will the battery in this device. Expect about 100 full charge/discharge uses or 5 - 7 years, whichever comes first, before the battery in this will need to be replaced. Some of these jump-starters/inverters don't have user replaceable batteries so you may have to replace the whole unit anyway. You can usually find a reasonably priced replacement battery on e-Bay if you're handy enough to disassemble the unit and find out what size battery is inside. Based on the weight and size I would say the VEC026BD has a 20 Amp Hr battery inside it, but that is only a guess on my part and should be verified by disassembly.

For the money I'm not super-impressed with this unit. I just bought the Xantrex PowerPack 600 on sale from Amazon for $100 delivered. The 600 has a more powerful battery and can run larger appliances longer than the B&D. It usually goes for $130 but even at that price it's worth the premium over the B&D.

I hope this guide has been helpful to you to maximize the usefulness and life of your jump-start inverter, and to give you an idea of what to expect when you purchase one.
