(More customer reviews)We needed a higher power interter to use in our RV when camping without shore power.We needed to power two laptop computers, charge cell phones and PDAs and run a small fan.This Cobra unit reviewed well so I ordered one from Amazon.It was delivered in just a few days (thanks Amazon). It has a solid feel to it, connectors are of good quality, and it is small enough not to be obtrusive in the confines of an RV.I used the cigarette lighter plug and put this on our dining table.The two AC plugs accommodated two AC adapters for laptops.As a bonus, there is a USB port on the Cobra that will supply 5 volts! So, I can charge my Blackberry simultaneously.What a delight!!The unit has an internal fan which only runs as needed.If I'm just charging a cell phone, then the fan does not run - but when I've got a load on - the fan runs and effectively cools the inverter.This is not a pure sine wave inverter but I've had no trouble at all using it with various laptops, pdas, fans, and cell phone chargers.I've not used it to power a TV or Radio (those could be more sensitive to interter noise).After a months use, I'm delighted with the inverter - it meets my needs completely.

(More customer reviews)Just before Hurricane Charley and his 2 sisters rubbed up against the Orlando area a couple years ago, I bought the Coleman 400 Watt Inverter. We lost our power for 5 days at a time.

Clamping this unit directly to the battery and closing the hood, I ran an extension cord into the house and plugged a 3-way into the end.We could run 3 12in. oscillating fans all night and sleep comfortably!

Most fans draw less than 1 amp per hour, so the draw on the battery is minimal.Just fire up the car (sitting in the AC) for a few minutes and the battery is topped off.

I went this route because the generator method has too many negatives for me: Theft or worse, fumes or worse, and the incessant noise. This can make your neighbors more than a little testy, especially if they have no power at all.And as always happens, the more you have the more you want.All we really needed was a way to cool off and cold drinks.The cooling off problem resolved, we turned to cooling food and drinks.This is easy.Freeze clean gallon milk jugs with drinkable water. As it melts, you've got cold water! (Unlike tornadoes, hurricanes let you know they are coming; you have time to prepare.) All of your cold stuff will be cold already so the ice chest and frozen water will work fine for a good many days. 2 ice chests lets you go get more stuff without it thawing or melting before you get back home.We use a Coleman stove outside for cooking and making coffee.The coffee became a huge hit with the neighbors!We use battery operated lights instead of candles.Candles are a no no!Not much light, unwanted heat and a real fire hazard.Candles are for romance. A boom box will run forever on batteries as long as you don't use the cd or cassette player. and lastly, we have a small battery operated TV. We are news junkies.

Here's how to figure how many amps you are drawing off your car battery:
Amps X Volts(120)= Watts.Examples: .5amps X 120volts = 60 Watts.3amps X 120volts = 360 Watts. That's the limit for this 400 Watt Inverter, so forget your big ticket items.

(More customer reviews)I just purchased this jump starter and I am a little disappointed in the quality.First off, the clamps on the jumper cables are made of plastic; I will probably be using this jump starter in cold weather and plastic gets brittle in cold weather.Furthermore, I would like to have seen thicker jumper cables.Secondly, the power inverter can only run very low wattage electronics, i.e. a laptop computer.I tried powering my 20" CRT television, but no go.I doubt it can run any standard tools such as a corded drill, or any garden tools.Thirdly, the storage area for the compressor hose is a very tight squeeze and I am worried the hose will eventually break from being forced in there all the time.Furthermore, there is no place to store the charging adaptors in the unit.If this thing is dead when you want to use it and the adaptors are not with it, it is useless.Lastly, there are no directions that come with the unit, in fact, no literature what so ever.I would have at least liked to have known how long I should have initially charged the battery.

On the other hand, I like the battery status gauge and the air compressor gauge.They both come in handy and this unit is one of the few that offers them both.The work light uses LED's instead of light bulbs, so it should last longer.I like that the case is rubberized and it looks like it can take a bit of abuse.

There are better quality jump starters out there, but for the price this one is a pretty good buy.In addition, if you go on the sportsman's guide website, it sounds like this unit has a lifetime guarantee.

(More customer reviews)Pros: very compact and portable; able to usually power my HP laptop; long'ish power cord; easy to use.
Cons: 1) It has a little cooling fan that is slightly noisy and runs almost continuously. Highway road noise mostly masks the noise. 2) Sometimes the inverter would blink a red light and temporarily suspend power output. Maybe it was too hot powering my HP laptop. According to kill-o-watt, my laptop usually draws only about 25 watts, or about 40 watts when also recharging the battery. 3) It sometimes smells a little bit like burnt plastic.

Overall, I am satisfied with this inverter for the money spent. If I had to buy another, I'd probably get something with a little more power. However, my Honda Civic has a limit of 120 watts for DC accessories. The 175 watt inverter I used to have blew the fuse. Check your auto owner's manual for the power limit before you buy.

Xantrex 852-1840 XPower Powerpack 300 Plus Portable Backup Power Source Review

(More customer reviews)I followed the charging instructions for the Power Pack 300 C. After 48 hours of AC charging, the light was still amber instead of green. The manual said, if the light was amber, wait 15 mins and press a button on the unit that would reveal the charging level. I did this and the unit said it was fully charged. The Power Pack ran a 40 watt table lamp for 4 hours as promissed!
However the next time I charged the system the same thing happened. The light was Amber. After waiting 30 mins I pressed the button on the unit but this time it registered "RED". I moved the unit to another outlet and charged it for another 48 hours. Same Result (RED)! I plugged in the 40 watt table lamp and it lasted only 20 mins.
I love the idea Xantrex had for a portable electronic generator, however their execution came up a little short on this one. The unit is going back!

(More customer reviews)This is a slick, useful product that does just what it says it will do.I used to work at Radioshack, and we sold a lot of these, and they were hardly ever returned, so I got one for myself.I use it to charge my cellphone (with the house charger) and my laptop while I'm traveling.It is much more quiet than other inverters, has a big, blue indicator light to show when it is working, and is slim enough to slip under a seat, or even between the center console and a seat (where I have mine).It says "100 watts", but that is only the peak output.Continuous output is only 80 watts, so be sure to check that what you are using it for is 80 or less.It is great for battery charging, but don't even think of running a vacuum or a power tool, that isn't what it is intended for.

Whistler PI-400W 400 Watt Power Inverter Review

(More customer reviews)I had previously purchased a Xantrex 851-400 inverter to run in conjunction with a marine battery so as to power lights for my jewelry booth at Art Fairs. I was very happy with it but when I decided to expand my use of lights, necessitating a second battery and a second inverter, for whatever reason I decided to try the Whistler PI-400W and save a whopping $7.55. Big mistake. The Xantrex will operate flawlessly for 2 days sucking enough juice out of that marine battery to operate 75 watts of CFL bulbs for 8-10 hours each day. The Whistler worked well for the first day but kick off after 2 hours of the second. The first time that it happened I rationalized that perhaps I hadn't fully charged the second marine battery but after making sure to test it again with both batteries on successive weekends, I got the same result both times. The moral of the story is that Amazon does a great job of refunding your money during the first 30 days and don't get cheap when making your purchase. If you find a product that does the job well that you need it to do, pay the man!

(More customer reviews)This model is a recent purchase and I also have one 12V only model (3600) that I purchased two years ago.I own two farms and several vehicles and various farm equipment. Both units are very rugged and perform very well. I have used them both to start farm tractors, cars, trucks, mowers, a generator, and my Bobcat in winter. The cables and clamps are heavy commercial quality items that store nicely when not in use.The built-in charger works well to quickly charge and maintain the internal batteries. It will jump-start several vehicles between charges. These have really proved invaluable and save me the hassle of getting a truck close in while trying to get the battery side close enough so I can wrestle around with a cold set of jumper cables - what a pain.. I carry one of these on trips, when towing or in bad weather so in an emergency I don't have to rely on the kindness of strangers for a jump-start although I have rescued two damsels in distress and one city guy with a Neon so far. You don't have to worry about smoking the alternator on your truck when jumping an unfamiliar vehicle either. The accessory 12V cigarette lighter-type outlet has actually proven to be a handy "never thought I would use it" feature. The switches are commercial quality and are not flimsy junk like many others.The LED readout actually provides useful information concerning internal battery or vehicle voltage levels or percentage of charge.If you are in the market for a no-nonsense unit, then I can tell you I have been very pleased with both of mine. You can rest assured that you will get what you pay for. Ladies, these would make a great gift for your busy guy. Just make sure it's big enough for his equipment. The 12V only is fine unless he has really big trucks, tractors or airplanes. I had to buy both of mine myself. I was able to take advantage of an Amazon gift card to help out on the second one. I was very surprised how quickly this one arrived.

Two design shortcomings I hoped weren't there, keep it from 5 stars - #1: it charges from either a wall-wart 12V adapter, or from a 12V cigarette lighter plug.I much prefer a direct 120V power cord connection versus the wall adapter variety.#2 shortcoming: it doesn't have a self float-charge cycle - you must limit your charge times manually by unplugging it (battery damage if charged too long).Ach!Still, guess a person could attach his own float-charge unit instead of the supplied 12vdc adapter.But heck, Wagan, design that into it, like the better powerpacks have.

(More customer reviews)I needed an inverter to charge my laptop and cell phone in the car on road trips, and this one fit the bill nicely.I have tested it out in the car with my computer plugged in, and it works fine.It powered my computer and supplied plenty of current to charge the battery while I was using it.
This thing is smart.If you try to run it off the 12V accessory outlet in your car without running the engine, the inverter lets out a constant beep telling you that you're going to run down your battery if you continue.According to the manual, this beep could also mean that the voltage dropped below 11.0V.I didn't know which it was in my particular case, but as soon as I started the engine, the squeal stopped and it was happy to charge my computer.
The ground fault interruptor, overpower and underpower warnings, battery drain warnings, auto shut-off, the 12V DC pass-through, and the option to hook the inverter directly to your battery are all very very useful features on a solid product.Well worth the reasonable price you pay!

(More customer reviews)This item works as advertised, but it is a modified sine wave inverter.If you are planning on using it to charge cordless tool batteries---don't.The owners manual contains a caution about using with cordless tool chargers (such as Dewalt).Do a quick Internet search on "cordless tools" and "modified sine wave inverter" to confirm whether your tool is effected.Some other items that may not work well are appliances with clocks, microwaves, etc.Be sure you understand the limitations of a modified sine wave inverter.
For those smaller appliances that will run on modified sine wave, this item works well.

(More customer reviews)I just opened the package and haven't used this thing yet - so I can't comment on functionality - but I wanted to let others know that this unit DOES come with a cigarette lighter plug (as well as a set of alligator clips) that you can attach to the screw posts.

I wasted a couple bucks on a separate cigarette lighter plug when I ordered because the product information says nothing about coming with the cigarette lighter plug.

Oh - There is also a sticker on the cigarette lighter cable warning not to draw more than 150 watts when using it plugged into a lighter socket (use the alligator clips or your own custom wires to connect straight to the battery for full power)

(More customer reviews)I thought I was taking a chance on this product when I found it at a Black and Decker Outlet store in Michigan. I figured mine is getting old and I should get a spare.
However, I soon found that I had gotten very lucky for $40. This tool seems fool-proof (I should know) and does seem to be pretty automatic as stated. As soon as the battery is charged it will reduce the charging amperage on its own. I have not even used all the options yet, but the battery reconditioning function is pretty cool--I've saved one so far that I would have otherwise replaced. Also, the cable storage makes it nice and tidy on the shelf. Remember that to perform a jump-start a car, though, it will only perform the task a few times, then needs four or five minutes to 'recharge' in order to do the jump-start again.
