(More customer reviews)I thought I was taking a chance on this product when I found it at a Black and Decker Outlet store in Michigan. I figured mine is getting old and I should get a spare.
However, I soon found that I had gotten very lucky for $40. This tool seems fool-proof (I should know) and does seem to be pretty automatic as stated. As soon as the battery is charged it will reduce the charging amperage on its own. I have not even used all the options yet, but the battery reconditioning function is pretty cool--I've saved one so far that I would have otherwise replaced. Also, the cable storage makes it nice and tidy on the shelf. Remember that to perform a jump-start a car, though, it will only perform the task a few times, then needs four or five minutes to 'recharge' in order to do the jump-start again.

(More customer reviews)I've owned this charger for 5 years.It has a "manual" function, meaning that you can charge a battery past the normal 80% that the automatic chargers will.It means you can also charge one more quickly because the automatic function (also on this unit) of most chargers tapers off the amperage sent to the charger as it reaches 80% of charge.(15 amps also goes faster than ten.)Manual means you can also "condition" a battery to get the sulfites off of the plates, by carefully charging and watching to the point where the battery plates begin to gas off.Means a battery will take and maintain a better charge and last longer.I use it on the RV cabin battery for this, but also use it regularly just for car stuff.

All this and it does what other chargers do.2 amp trickle charge, high powered capacitor starting function.

I DROVE OVER THIS CHARGER WITH A 5000 POUND 1986 LTD CROWN VICTORIA TODAY!FLAT as a pancake.Ahem, well.First plugged it in and promptly blew the garage circuit breaker.Immediately started hunting for other Schumacher chargers on the net.After spending two hours and seeing this particular unit is now over $100 new, thought "Well, let's see if I somehow tear it apart and look."No sooner got the mangled housing off, and (uuuhhh!!) bent the back upright (which had a circuit board on it), plugged it in, and it works!!And, in the course of bending back the heavy steel housing, NO paint flaked off.Must be baked-on enamel.These babies are built tough.As another reviewer for Schumacher chargers said, "No repackaged imported junk".

I take my hat off to this company: features, durability (!), quality........ wow.

Schumacher SC-8000A Speedcharge Charger/Maintainer Review

(More customer reviews)The meter accuracy on the SC-800A was within 0.05 volts, and the charging algorithms appear to work well, although they are not described in the instructions.

I observed that the voltage was generally limited to 15.5 for regular, 16.0 for deep cycle, and 14.7 for AGM batteries.The 30 amp capability is in the form of a long timed pulse of about 2 minutes followed by 12 amps for a similar time period, then repeating until the voltage has risen enough that it isn't required.The amperage isn't constant, it tapers down to limit the voltage in typical CC/CV fashion, although the algorithm appears to actually be more complex.For instance, on a particular AGM battery it went to 15.5 volts near the end of the charge (95%) with current at about 1.5 amps for about 30 minutes and then stopped (completed).I suspect that this was an automatic attempt to condition the battery.A DieHard 71227 charger (Schumacher makes the DieHard 71227 charger) did the same thing.After three discharge cycles, it stoped doing the "high-voltage treatment".Also, in AGM mode it went to 15.5 volts briefly during one of the 40 amp cycles.Although the instructions for DieHard Platinum and Odyssey batteries say to choose a charger with <14.8 volts, this charger was obviously designed with these batteries in mind.

Two small negative notes.If a battery has voltage close to zero, the safety features won't let it operate.Also, if the AC power cycles, it will come back on as a charger set for 2 amps in regular battery mode after 15minutes.I wouldn't recommend leaving an AGM battery connected in maintenance mode.It's odd that the charger doesn't store the last used settings in the microprocessor's eeprom, or just use battery power to keep the processor running.

Overall, it's a nice charger.I hope some of the tech info above helps.

(More customer reviews)As my title states, this charger handles all four main types of large batteries: Lead Acid Auto Starter batteries, Deep Cycle Marine, AGM and Gel Cell.You select battery type and size and it takes care of the rest.When you first hook up the clips to the battery and plug in the charger, selecting battery type, it tests the battery and gives you the volts available as well as the percentage that battery is currently charged!Many times I've wanted to know that.You then select battery size and it starts charging.If you select 15 or 10 amps, when the battery is fully charged it goes into a maintenance mode automatically!You can leave the charger running forever - and it won't over charge the battery.Also - if your battery is damaged by sulfide build up, it detects that and runs a cycle to clean the battery and give it life again if it can.Wow.I wonder how many batteries I've replaced that could have been revived or kept alive by this charger?!This is going to save me a lot of money.

I purchased a new 850 cc amp deep cycle battery to use as an emergency power source for my amateur radio equipment (I'm a net control storm spotter for the National Weather Service Skywarn network).This brand new battery tested at 95% charged - so I fully charged it (while using the radio) and it worked fine.Charged up to 100% and went into maintenance mode automatically.Took the charger to the farm and connected it to a dead tractor battery.Showed 11% charged and began building the charge immediately.Was up to 15% in about 7 minutes when I had to leave.I'll have to update this review later to let you know if it was able to salvage that poor battery.

I know of no other chargers that test the battery, charge all types of batteries and can safely be left on to maintain them as well.Go check out the cost of Gel Cell battery chargers - and you'll find this is a deal.

BTW, if you forget to turn it from 'test' to 'charge', after 10 minutes or so this charger will automatically charge up the battery and keep it maintained for you!How easy is that?

(More customer reviews)This jewel is very light to pack a 50Amp punch.I connected it to a battery insufficient to turn over the starter.The guy working on the house left his light on in the truck bed.I connected the charger to the battery while in the 2Amp mode, then plugged the battery charger into the 120VAC receptacle.I then switched it to the 50Amp selection and allowed to charge the battery for 4-5 minutes.While the charger was still connected to the battery, the guy was able to start his truck.Man was I blown away.Following the instructions, I changed the charging selection switch to the 2Amp mode, disconnected the charger from the 120VAC receptacle, and then disconnected it from the battery.How sweet - no arcing, no sparking.This is a must have!!!Excellent value and quality.

(More customer reviews)Purchased this charger but when I removed it from the box I was very skeptical about its quality, it seemed too lightweight. Once I hooked the device to a battery I had in an old Mustang that had been sitting around forever and had absolutely no charge in it the device went into its repair mode. Its built in micro-chip recognized that my battery had such a low charge that the plates inside of battery had become sulfated so it automatically switched from my setting of a regular 10 amp charge to its desulfation mode and proceeded to repair my battery. It took close to six hours for the device to repair the battery but once again, with no input from me it changed back to its normal 10 amp charge mode that I had initially selected. I left the charger on overnight and in the morning it was fully charged (A green LED starts to shine), sometime during the night, after the charger recognized the battery was fully charged, it switched again this time to its maintain mode. When the charger charges the battery to its full capacity it shuts itself off but continues to monitor the batteries voltage, if battery voltage starts to slip under 14 volts charger turns back on and sends the battery short pulses of energy to maintain the battery at full capacity, this is its maintain mode. The reason for the short pulses of energy instead of its normal straight charging mode is to prevent the water in the battery from bubbling up and evaporating away which would happen if a normal charger was left charging a battery for more than a couple of days. This feature is fantastic, it makes sure that if somehow a mistake is made and charger is left on for to long that it will never overcharge the battery, in fact by leaving the charger on the battery after it has been fully charged it will actually keep your battery at its peak performance level. This was the easiest and most efficient charger I have ever had or seen. I charged another battery I had that was only discharged about 30% and it charged it to full capacity in less than an hour, amazing.

(More customer reviews)First, let me say that this charger performs flawlessly and deserves five stars when it is in charging mode. I have used it for three years and hundreds of successful charging cycles on a dozen different batteries of various sizes and types.

However, on two different occasions and with two different batteries (both brand new when hooked to the charger) I left them in "trickle charge" mode. The batteries were part of an emergency communications station that must to be ready at any time with full batteries. This charger burned up both batteries after three months of trickle charging. This mode is supposed to allow a battery to be hooked up indefinitely and maintain it at peak performance. Not destroy it. Other folks in the emergency communications service use other chargers and leave them in trickle mode for years. DO NOT use this charger for that kind of operation.
