(More customer reviews)Darn, my riding mower wouldn't start last week, just as the grass was ready for the year's first mow.I am a single 47 year old woman who knows zilch about machinery.Since the mower wasn't making a peep when I turned the key, I went with "battery is dead".Every month over the winter I started the mower up and ran it for 5 minutes, but guess this last April freeze finally zapped it.I researched chargers and this one sounded the best for the money.Paid for it on 4/10, used supersaver shipping and got it on 4/13!My Troy-Bilt manual says to use a 12-volt charger on 6 amps for one hour.The Schumacher manual says to use this on 2 amps for 3-8 hours for riding mowers, but I went ahead and set it for 6 amps.When I plugged it in, the ammeter (never heard of that word before, but the manual told me the meter was called that) read 3 amps, which supposedly meant the battery was fully charged.Doh!!!But I went ahead and charged it for 1 hour and, Eureka, the mower started up just fine.This charger is so easy to use.I ran an extension cord out to my shed, clipped the red clip to the positive terminal, the black clip to the unpainted rear end of tractor, put the power plug in the extension cord and waited one hour.Can't beat that for simplicity.(I finally noticed I could flip the mower seat up out of the way of the top of the battery - that's how much of a novice I am.)

It was a real pain to get the charger out and hook it up (the battery is under the rear seat) every time I wanted to take it out. Those days are over. With one quick disconnect of this little gem I am on my way in minutes rather than hours. Wish I had bought this a long time ago. I highly recommend it if you have similar circumstances.

(More customer reviews)It may or may not have worked.However, it requires you to monitor the battery being charged, and remove it before over charging!For a few bucks more (sometimes less), you can get a trickle charger that can be left attached to the battery indefinitely (all winter) without causing damage.Just hook it up and forget it!Don't waste money on a manual trickle charger.

(More customer reviews)Every time I want to fire up my old 71 Datsun (that's Nissan for those of you younger than 30) 240 Z there's a good chance that the battery has drained down and that I can't start it! Looking around at car forums I read about this nifty little gadget....It's like a battery trickle charger....sort of. Whereas it's not recommended to keep a trickle charger hooked up all the time, this one hascircuitry to limit the current and sense when the battery needs charging. It only charges at 1.25 amps which is easier on the battery.

I've had it on for a month now and it's great. The first couple of days, the red light was on indicating charging. Since then it's been on green and the car starts right up. I live in Houston where the heat and humidity can be just as brutal on batteries as the cold.

I highly recommend this "tender" for those that have cars that stay unused for long periods.

As other reviews have mentioned it comes with a set of adapters that allow you to permanently attach pigtails to the battery posts and then you can quickly connect the tender without having to use the alligator clips (also included).

For the price and free shipping you can't go wrong!

UPDATE after two years of use.
I can now reconfirm that these battery tenders work great - I've had them hooked up continuously on two cars that stay in the garage a lot and I've NEVER had them not start right up. A quick glance at the LED display lets me know that the batteries are either charging or fully charged. It's a real pleasure to be able to go right up and enjoy your wheels without having to worry about whether the battery is dead. I can't say for sure, but I suspect that it lengthens the life of the battery as well.

Battery Tender 021-0123 Battery Tender Junior 12V Battery Charger Review

First, unlike its big brother, the Plus, the Junior is not temperature compensated.To find out more about that, go to batterytender.com, click on the FAQs link on the left and read item #18:"What is Temperature Compensation and how important is it?"

I was concerned about this, as living in the desert as I do, the temperature in my garage is 90 to 130 degrees most of the year and can drop to the 50s in the winter.I inquired about this to Battery Tender support and received this answer:"The Junior is not a temperature compensating unit, however, when the temperature is hotter, the unit will actually charge the battery a bit faster and it will not harm the battery."I don't know what to make of this, especially since compensation is so important according to their FAQ.

The other is to make sure you get the 4-step Junior which replaced the 3-step over a year and a half ago.On the back side of the packaging on the left side look for the reference to "Complete 4-step."

That being said, I've been using a Junior for almost 6 months on my motorcycle so I can't post up my experience as well as others here.I'm hoping it will provide my batteries with more service than the 14-16 months I'm used to.

By popular acclaim and editorial content, the Junior and the Plus have garnered untarnished reputations and withstood the test of time.For maintaining your battery, there really isn't anything else out there.

(More customer reviews)As my title states, this charger handles all four main types of large batteries: Lead Acid Auto Starter batteries, Deep Cycle Marine, AGM and Gel Cell.You select battery type and size and it takes care of the rest.When you first hook up the clips to the battery and plug in the charger, selecting battery type, it tests the battery and gives you the volts available as well as the percentage that battery is currently charged!Many times I've wanted to know that.You then select battery size and it starts charging.If you select 15 or 10 amps, when the battery is fully charged it goes into a maintenance mode automatically!You can leave the charger running forever - and it won't over charge the battery.Also - if your battery is damaged by sulfide build up, it detects that and runs a cycle to clean the battery and give it life again if it can.Wow.I wonder how many batteries I've replaced that could have been revived or kept alive by this charger?!This is going to save me a lot of money.

I purchased a new 850 cc amp deep cycle battery to use as an emergency power source for my amateur radio equipment (I'm a net control storm spotter for the National Weather Service Skywarn network).This brand new battery tested at 95% charged - so I fully charged it (while using the radio) and it worked fine.Charged up to 100% and went into maintenance mode automatically.Took the charger to the farm and connected it to a dead tractor battery.Showed 11% charged and began building the charge immediately.Was up to 15% in about 7 minutes when I had to leave.I'll have to update this review later to let you know if it was able to salvage that poor battery.

I know of no other chargers that test the battery, charge all types of batteries and can safely be left on to maintain them as well.Go check out the cost of Gel Cell battery chargers - and you'll find this is a deal.

BTW, if you forget to turn it from 'test' to 'charge', after 10 minutes or so this charger will automatically charge up the battery and keep it maintained for you!How easy is that?

I have a classic British sports car that I rarely drive, and until I started using this charger I would return to my car to a dead battery. This charger/maintainer comes with everything you need to quickly connect and disconnect this item, in 3 different ways: eye hole connectors to permanently attach the quick connector to your battery for very easy use, large alligator type clips for temporary use on a car that you want to just charge the battery on, and for super easy use there is a plug for use in the 12volt power outlet or cigar lighter. It has power sensing, so you cant over charge, and it will maintain the proper voltage for as long as it is connected. The wires are long enough from the charger itself to stretch across any car, and the power cable is about 8 feet long. Great little charger/maintainer. I would recommend this to anyone.

(More customer reviews)I am fortunate enough to maintain two houses - one in the mid-West for the summer and a second one in the Palm Springs area for the winter. Rather than drive 1500 miles each way I have a couple of cars in each location so each set will sit idle for six months of the year which means I usually have two dead batteries when I arrive for the season. I tried a cheaper brand of trickle charger in the desert last year and it worked but I was afraid that if it burned out I would still return to dead batteries. I really like the quality of the Schumacher products having two of their multifunction battery chargers that have worked well for over 10 years. When I saw that they offered high quality trickle chargers I bought two of them to make the switch to worry free charging. The chargers are well built and heavy for their size and the build quality is typical Schumacher. The chargers are intended to be installed in the engine compartment with battery connections that are permanently connected to the charger and for power a short plug comes out of the side of the unit and is easily connected to a grounded extension cord. I really didn't want to install these under the hood even though they supply the mounting brackets and screws required but I did like the idea of the permanent connection to the battery as opposed to a clamp which could fall off in the middle of the season and leave me with a dead battery. Remembering how the chargers connected in the Power Wheels toys my sons had several years ago, I was able to find polarity keyed plug connectors in the trailer wiring section of the local auto parts store and now have a shortpigtail permanently connected to the battery and the ability to plug and unplug it into the charger when I want. Now I have the best of all worlds, the security of a solid connection to the battery and the flexibility of being able to plug and unplug the charger with ease. I like this a lot.
