Xantrex 852-1840 XPower Powerpack 300 Plus Portable Backup Power Source Review

Xantrex 852-1840 XPower Powerpack 300 Plus Portable Backup Power Source
Average Reviews:

I followed the charging instructions for the Power Pack 300 C. After 48 hours of AC charging, the light was still amber instead of green. The manual said, if the light was amber, wait 15 mins and press a button on the unit that would reveal the charging level. I did this and the unit said it was fully charged. The Power Pack ran a 40 watt table lamp for 4 hours as promissed!
However the next time I charged the system the same thing happened. The light was Amber. After waiting 30 mins I pressed the button on the unit but this time it registered "RED". I moved the unit to another outlet and charged it for another 48 hours. Same Result (RED)! I plugged in the 40 watt table lamp and it lasted only 20 mins.
I love the idea Xantrex had for a portable electronic generator, however their execution came up a little short on this one. The unit is going back!

I thought this charger was the greatest thing around the first couple of times I used it.Now, less than a year after I purchased it, it won't charge the battery. The battery meter shows that is has about a half charge (12.5 volts) but there isn't enough juice to turn over a VW beetle.I tried to plug it in to recharge it but it is not taking a charge. It looks and feels very durable. The compressor worked fine yesterday but the internal battery in the unit won't charge.Seems like I'm not the first with this problem.

As soon as I used this jump starter to attempt a start of my lawn tractor, it signaled that it needed to be charged despite the fact that this was the first use after it was initially charged until the green light came on.

I recharged it until the green light came back on and tried again to charge the lawn tractor battery-still nothing.

I finally used a plug in battery charger and that did the trick.I don't know how useful this unit would be if I needed it to jump start a car battery.

Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome Jumpstarter with Built-In Air Compressor and LED Utility Light Review

Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome Jumpstarter with Built-In Air Compressor and LED Utility Light
Average Reviews:

Many useful features in this design: compact but capable and rugged.A recommended item for emergency power outages, and for general service where portable power is needed: starts dead car batteries, pumps tires, runs 120V tools, etc.

Two design shortcomings I hoped weren't there, keep it from 5 stars - #1: it charges from either a wall-wart 12V adapter, or from a 12V cigarette lighter plug.I much prefer a direct 120V power cord connection versus the wall adapter variety.#2 shortcoming: it doesn't have a self float-charge cycle - you must limit your charge times manually by unplugging it (battery damage if charged too long).Ach!Still, guess a person could attach his own float-charge unit instead of the supplied 12vdc adapter. But heck, Wagan, design that into it, like the better powerpacks have.

Duracell Powerpack 450 Jumpstarter with Built-In 150 PSI Air Compressor Review

Average Reviews:

Works fine. It comes with 1/2 charge. Don't use it. Follow the instructions and give it that first long charge and it will work fine. I am in the country so a low tire can become a real issue. I just went out with the machine and topped off a low tire no problem. I had to try the electric because it goes out here from time to time. I plugged in a lamp and it ran for 6hrs. and 15 mins. And I am guessing it will run heat tape for 10 hrs or more. Important when you lose power at 10 below. And I feel confident if I have a low car battery this will work as advertised. Just to be able to get a car started at 5 in the morning and not be late for work is worth the purchase price. And the real reason I wanted it was for in the spring and during the summer for the lawn tractor. Every year at least one tire is low. And every year I get at least one slow leak 5 mins. before being done. This year I am ready.

Wagan Smart AC 120 Watt USB Power Inverter Review

Wagan Smart AC 120 Watt USB Power Inverter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very small DC > AC inverter than converts 12V DC from your car to 120V AC.The removable power cord is a good idea and it has a handy 5V USB plug on the side for charging small USB devices.

It's smaller than a deck of cards but they've overrated it's power capacity by quite a bit.It doesn't have enough cooling capacity to prevent overheating of it's internal parts with even a small load, so it gets hot and shuts off.

I measured it's output with a quality Fluke TrueRMS voltmeter and the output looks ok at 117V AC which is close to a standard 120V household outlet. This is adequate to run most low power AC devices with no issues.

The 120 Watt load rating is overstated because it heats up to 100`F even before you plug in anything. Then it gets really hot if you connect anything that draws some power such as a laptop computer.I tried a Dell D830 laptop which requires 25 watts to run.The AC Inverter overheated and shutdown within 2 minutes while running a laptop.

I have a variety of test equipment and found that the inverter can handle 15 watts all day but 20 watts is the thermal limit.25 watts overloads it and it overheated to 190`F and shutdown in 2 minutes. It smelled like hot plastic burning. It's possible another inverter of the same model may perform better but that is not likely.

This design has marginal internal cooling capacity so it appears limited to about 20 watts max.The tiny 3/4" built-in fan is quiet at first and it gets louder as the inverter heats up.The fan has a high pitched whine and is really too small. The fan noise may be ok in a moving automobile as it would be drowned out by road noise.

If they changed the design to include a real aluminum heatsink with some mass to it that would increase the power handling a lot.A bigger 2" fan would have worked also.

There is no "off" button.
It has a power LED to indicate that it's on.
The overtemp shutdown feature works.
The fan is thermally regulated, and ends up running all the time.
The low battery feature works and it will shut off if the input voltage gets below 10.3V DC.
It automatically turns back on when the voltage comes back up to 12V.
Tiny high speeed fans typically don't have a long lifespan.

Technical data:
I measured a 400mA current draw with the unit idling with nothing plugged in.A 25 watt load draws 2 amps on the 12V line which sounds about right. Be aware that if you try to run something that actually draws 120 watts (using an inverter that could handle it) a load that big may blow the fuse in your vehicle 12V outlet since they typically has a 10-15 amps fuse.10 amps X 12V = 120 watts, for example.

Conclusion:
This is a really tiny voltage inverter. If you plan to only run small equipment like a AA battery charger, camera, or MP3 player that needs 5 to 10 watts then it should work ok for you.

I am going to return mine in favor of a physically larger inverter with some mass to keep it cool and one that can really handle 50 watts or more.A quality unit rated for 50 watts would be much better than a tiny, plastic, overrated 120 Watt one.

Xantrex Powerpack 600 Watt Jumpstarter, Power Inverter and Backup Power Source Review

Xantrex Powerpack 600 Watt Jumpstarter, Power Inverter and Backup Power Source
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After spending my vacation in Florida during hurricane Wilma, I learned the value of being prepared for a prolonged power outage. This unit would have been just the thing.

This is essentially a big 12 volt battery and an inverter that produces 120v AC from the battery. While this unit won't power a heater or an air conditioner, it can power a small fan overnight so you can sleep. It can also charge your cell phone and laptop. (After all, your laptop's DVD player might be your only entertainment.) The XPower can power a lamp so you can read or play cards, or you can watch a small TV for a few hours. You can plug in just about anything so long as the total number of watts drawn is 480 or less. (The 600 watt rating is a 5 minute rating, you can only draw 480 watts continuously.)Keep in mind, if you do pull 480 watts, you'll only get 15 minutes of run time. It's best to think of the 600HD as a way to keep small essentials going.

There's an emergency light built-in. if you place the unit so the light bounces off a near-by wall, it makes a nice low-level room light. With the backside facing you, you see the built-in clock radio. It's not hi-fi, but it's not horrible, it has good volume and it can wake you in the morning. There's also a 12v outlet and a connector for attaching the supplied jumper cables.

You do have to be mindful of the number of watts you pull from the unit if you want the battery to last. It's easy to know how many watts you're drawing because the unit tells you on it's digital display. It's a good thing you can charge the XPower from a car cigarette lighter. During my adventure in Wilma's wake, I would have used the XPower by night and charged it in the car while driving during the day. The digital display also shows the percentage of charge left in the battery.

The best thing to have during a prolonged power outage is a gas generator. But generators require periodic maintenance. And you have to store fresh gas and remember to change the gas periodically. With the HD600, you just find an out-of-the-way corner, plug in the AC charger and forget all about it until the lights go out.

The XPower has a big 28 amp-hour battery which is good for capacity, but makes the unit heavy, almost 30 pounds, so you won't want to carry it very far. Xantrex makes smaller units, but I think the 600 is the best compromise between capacity and portability. The XPower's construction is robust and it looks like it could take some hard knocks.

Duracell Powersource Mobile 100 Review

Duracell Powersource Mobile 100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some people don't know the details about power supplies like this. This one requires a long answer.

The PowerSource will provide about 45 Watt Hours. It has a limit of 60 watts from the battery and 80 watts from the 12 volt input. It has a 100 Watt surge limit for a short time.

Translation: the run time depends on your computer and the existing charge level when you plug it in to the PowerSource.

If your laptop batteries are run down, the PowerSource probably will NOT operate it.
If you remove the batteries it may work. It may also work to charge with the laptop off.
If you run it with the 12 volt input it may operate your laptop.

The reason for this is; your laptop uses twice as much power to run if it charges the batteries at the same time.

It will work, if you plug the laptop into the PowerSource before you run down the batteries.

I tested my HP dual core laptop watching movies over the WIFI link. It ran 1 hour and 35 minutes on the PowerSource then 2 and a half hour on its own batteries. Same test, next day, same results.

This would be 4 hours on an airline flight. It will power a Zune or IPod for a long time.
The more powerful the laptop, the shorter the battery life. Your mileage may vary.

It includes a special plug that work on some airlines power jacks.

Many smart phones use a specially wired charger to charge from the wall and will only charge from a computer IF the computer has a data connection to the smart phone. A different USB cable will not help, unless it is wired special. A cheat that works on some Smart Phones is to plug it in then reboot the smart phone.

I recommend it.

This powerpack pretty much works as advertised. The coolest thing is the builtin 400 Watt inverter which allows you plug in almost any AC powered device.Great for emergency power or just portable camping power!Unit charges quickly using the supplied DC adapter or in about a day using the supplied AC adapter.
The only drawback is that the builtin air compressor isn't fan cooled so it can only operate about 10-15 minutes at a time before it over heats and air flow could be higher.Another option would be to plug in a high flow, heavy duty air compressor into the builtin 12V outlet or inverter.

Sunforce 50044 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit Review

Sunforce 50044 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
*Update* 6-2010, while my original panels are still running strong so long as I hose them down once a month, I've noticed that the PVC pipe provided to hold them in place has become brittle with sun exposure, hence I would now in 20/20 hindsight recommend a coat of Krylon Fusion Dover White Plastic Satin Spray Paint on the PVC parts to prevent UV cracking later in life.I do not think the Krylon Fusion product was available when I first setup my first panels but UV cracking of the support structure could cause panel damage in years 2 and 3.

Meanwhile Amazon got their hands on some obsolete & discontinued Sharp panels (12.5% efficiency vs the new 13.1% efficiency) - if you are serious about needing lots of solar power in a small space, this is a big kit - you can view it here: Sunforce 39126 246-Watt High-Efficiency Polycrystalline Solar Power Kit

My only concern about the kit is that due to the new panels being higher efficiency means it will be difficult to match panels if you find you still need more power later on.The other con on that system is it's price -- $1300+ but you get the wattage, along with a cheap charge controller and inverter, both of which could be upgraded for better system performance. It's just another solar system to consider in the $5/watt or less pricepoint for DIYers.

Update 9-18-2008 - Still going strong.I am very pleased with the summer power output of these panels.I wash them with a hose 1x/mo to keep the output current up.Measured before washing and after washing the panel efficiency is clearly a factor of how much dirt is on them.No problems long term on a roof though!

Update 2-20-2008 - goes with graph "photograph" #3 above - pink line is power and blue line is amps from the panel x 10 to share the graph. The X axis is panel voltage.Data was acquired using an Agilent dummy load with programmable voltage in 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) on a partially cloudy day in winter sun.Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in summer sun provided the panels don't get too hot. These are on my house roof laying flat on a 3/12 pitch facing due south which is suboptimal but easy for me to do.Be sure to read the photo notes.Sorry about the colors excel defaulted to!

This is a MPPT chart (maximum power point tracking) - you can see that the panels are optimized for charging a 12V wet cell right out of the box.Charge current turns on when battery voltage drops down to 13.0 VDC and turns off at 14.2 VDC with the supplied charge controller in the kit.

The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with bright sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current went up to 7.0 A maximum right after the rainstorm.Below is the original review - these panels have been running constant for 2 months now into 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the prosine inverter below to drain the energy made.

When reading the power/current chart you should keep in mind the amps have been multiplied by 10 so they use the same Y axis (so 20A on the chart corresponds to 2.0 A panel current) Watts are actual volts*amps. This was taken in the winter with partial clouds - expectations are for a X3 improvement during summertime but its still february and I'm in the northern hemisphere so we'll have to wait and see.Basically an MPPT charger won't gain but a few watts with this panel so it's not a good investment unless you already have one laying around.

(Begin original review after buying panels)

I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this one seems to show some promise and shows signs of good cost engineering and a complete design that can be set up quickly by one person with very little effort.I'd give it 5 stars if it were well packed, but my purchase turned into a shipping fiasco.

Most ALL solar installations are rated in $/watt much like new homes are rated in $/sq ft.We'll get to the sq ft bit later. Here you are getting 60W for 320 dollars or about 5.33 $/watt.Compared to a similar wattage panel, the BP solar 365U rated at 65W and priced (street) at 399 or 6.13 $/watt the amazon package seems to be a good deal when you consider it comes complete less battery (we'll hit that one later too)

In fact, the amazon package deal includes a xantrex 175 watt inverter with a .15A "idle" current designed for solar systems where current consumption must be minimized. It even includes a simple diode/switch "charge regulator" with 2 leds to indicate panel voltage and battery is full but lacks the ability to tell it what type of battery you are using (full is defined at 14.2 volts give or take so it's for wet/flooded cells).Neither of these are big buck items, but they do set you up for a complete small scale solar kit minus the battery out of the box, which is impressive.

Oh yes, the battery.I also ordered the duracell 480W inverter+28AH battery with this panel so I'd have a battery. Also made by Xantrex, it's a nice piece to complete the system.I made the mistake of ordering it with the solar panels (read on)

So how does China produce a complete kit for a lower $/watt price than professional solar companies like BP solar, GE, Kyocera, etc?Well - it's the sq ft part we forgot about for a while. This uses 4 panels @ 15W each to get up to 60 watts with a simple parallel adapter included in the kit.The BP solar is one panel about the size of 1 of these 15W panels, or put another way, is 1/4 the sq footage. So if you are planning on covering your roof with these, think again because you'd need a really big house and have lots of 7A charge diodes and 175W inverters kicking around when you are done. The reason for the 4:1 size difference is the China panels are made using a silicon deposition on glass technique with a very thin film and correspondingly thin output, while other manufacturers use a silicon wafer production method that is roughly 4x more efficient in area, and somewhat more expensive as a result.

Ok - now onto packaging. We need to get this from China to Amazon and finally to the consumer. On the first attempt FEDX carefully placed my fragile glass solar panels on the concrete then put 2ea 60lb batteries on top of them, cracking the glass on all 4 panels. After returning that to amazon, we tried again, this time without the batteries and shipping the system by itself.FEDX again noted shipment damage which wrecked 1 of the 4 panels, but running on 3/4 panels it does work, just not with full output.Amazon has given up because they will only ship and ruin something twice instead of making fedx pay up for piling 120 lbs of batteries on top of the glass panels and poking through the box & styrofoam the second time so I am still in negotiation with them about the shipment, however the product does deserve mention while I have it.

PERFORMANCE:

The design is actually quite well done. You can make (with 4 panels) a 12V (actually 15V) x 4A system, or a 30V x 2A or a 60V x 1A configuration depending on your power inverter and battery collection. For me, this will always be tied into a 12VDC bus so it is fine as shipped, but the flexibility is there if you have other voltages in use. There is no skimping on wire with 16 foot cords on each panel which helps to minimize power lost in the wire since each panel has its own cordset going to the combiner, after which runs are kept short. On a cloudy day I was able to get 2 amps from 3 panels (30 W) - in full sun it peaked at 5.91A with 3 panels, so the Chinese manufacturing has under-rated their output as 90W from a 1/4 dead 60W panel in winter sun is doing very good - I'd like to know how it performs in the summer!

As for mounting, a very clever system was designed to support the panels out of 1" PVC tubing with elbows and T's - all of this is assembled with a singular bolt/wingnut style and the pipes have slots milled into them to ensure that the panels will line up one way or another without breaking after you get them.It has a prop-up leg system for use on the ground or can lay flat if placed on a roof that is already angled towards the sun. There isn't a provision for connecting multiple systems together, however you could make one out of sprinkler pipes you probably have.

All this really needs to be a well designed solar kit is 1) better packaging and 2) a battery.Even with 25% of my panels broken and removed from the system, it still managed to charge a car battery in under 1 cloudy winter day.

I'm impressed with the product, however disappointed with the shipper.I've also run up against Amazon's policy of two strikes and they are out meaning they won't negotiate for repair or replacement as the shipper on my behalf.I can return it alltogether or pay 100% for 75% of a system so it's probably going back tomorrow (monday) - but my testing this weekend has shown that the product warrants consideration for people who

A)Need to keep their starting batteries charged year round (2nd cars, generators, etc) outside where AC power is not convenient.
B)People lacking A/C power somewhere and would like to run a small refrigerator (purchase aXantrex Technologies Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter #1000 TRUE SINEWAVE power inverter to run any motor load without damage) - for 12V refrigeration needs its best to AVOID both inverters and peltier...Read more›

VECTOR VEC012C Jump-Start System with Compressor Review

VECTOR VEC012C Jump-Start System with Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Jump-starter works fine, but the air compressor is cheaply constructed with plastic gearing. Inflating a tire that is completely flat causes the pump to get very hot, the hot metal part melted the plastic gears in my pump. The pump will stop working when it overheats, but the damage will be done. The jump-starter and light will be the only thing that will function afterward.

Schumacher PSJ2212 12 V 22 Amp DSR Jump Starter Review

Schumacher PSJ2212 12 V 22 Amp DSR Jump Starter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These units exceeded my expectations. They are dead easy to charge as you just plug an extension cord into the side of the unit (why didn't anyone else think of that). A clear digital indicator tells you the status of the charge. It even has a small cooling fan that runs during charging. We use these units for operating 12 VDC instruments in the field so we want a unit that will, at least, last all day. The jury is still out on this since few have been used yet but expectations are high.

Duracell DPP-300EP Powerpack 300 with Built-in 300-watt Inverter and 250 PSI Air Compressor Review

Duracell DPP-300EP Powerpack 300 with Built-in 300-watt Inverter and 250 PSI Air Compressor
Average Reviews:

I'd purchased a Black & DEcker Starter earlier this year from Amazon and it was a piece of junk. It NEVER worked; left my 16-yr old daughter stranded twice. This Duracell, however, lived up to its reputation: the air compressor is a very nice added bonus. If there is a downside, it is it takes a very long time to recharge (often overnight). It will recharge from the car's cigarette lighter outlet while the car's running, so this is a minor quibble.

Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome EX Jumpstarter with Built-In Air Compressor Review

Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome EX Jumpstarter with Built-In Air Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fantastic unit and the price is on par with other brand units.

Pros:
It has a charge indicator, FM/AM radio with aux. audio input jack as well as a USB power supply port for those suckers who own an IPOD, the LED light is bright enough, the presence of an air compressor is a plus and the hose is a decent length but doesn't appear so at first glance, 2 AC outlets as well as 1 DC outlet should provide ample space to plug in anything, and of course the jump cables for car starting which, like the air hose, is longer than it appears in the picture (about 2.5 feet)

The reason I gave it only 4 stars:
the power switch for the AC outlets on mine is a 2 stage switch, meaning it has off, 1, and 2 settings. The 1 does nothing and the 2 powers the outlets. Based upon the pictures, it is clear that a simple ON/OFF switch was meant to be there and probably is in most units but for whatever reason, mine has a different one (no biggie). The air compressor works fine but I have a problem with the fact the dial goes to 260psi. Who is pumping that much air into something? Because of that, I need to look closely when I am filling tires because the distance from 0-35/40 is very small. The tips for the air hose come loose so they will get tossed or lost easily. Lastly, the speaker for the radio is not the greatest, it would have been nice to have a built-in amp and an audio out but i guess this thing can only do so much.

Overall, it is a great buy and should do the job well for most people.

Black & Decker PS400JRB Electromate 400 Plus Jump-Starter with Built-In Radio Review

Black & Decker PS400JRB Electromate 400 Plus Jump-Starter with Built-In Radio
Average Reviews:

I bought this for aux. power on my boat when I'm on the water away from shore power. I have two marine batteries on my boat, but I bought this product for emergency back-up while on the open water. Keep in mind that I only use this product down below in a constant dry area of the sailboat's cabin (away from water) for safety reasons.I really didn't buy it for the jump starter or the USB Port, but if needed, I will be glad to have them. Since I didn't buy it primarily for the jump starter, I was glad to see that the jumper cables were detachable when not in use. I selected this product based on three factors: price, power and options. I saw this same product at Wal-mart for a more expensive pricetag (plus tax). Also, the free shipping from Amazon was fantastic: it is rather heavy, so to get free shipping on such a heavy product was a plus . The features are great. I get two AC and two DC power outlets. Having the two power options (AC or DC) is awesome. When I'm out on my boat, I can plug in a portable DVD player, charge/power up my phone and portable VHF in emergencies, and listen to the radio or weatherband all at the same time! I've used the radio (which gets good reception) and the light (more of a narrow spotlight for finding close objects). It seems to hold a charge for day and overnight sailing trips (for my light uses). Oh, a small blower kicks on when the 120V AC switch is turned on and the 12V DC outlets are rated for 5A max. each. Overall, I am quitehappy with this product. I can also see it useful for road trips and camping trips too! Oh, I almost forgot...you will need to buy a grounded extension cord to charge it, or you can use the included 12V charger (but that seems like it may take a long time to get a full charge from a drained battery).

UPDATE: Now that Amazon.com does not ship this item from its' warehouse, you as a consumer ARE NOT eligible for free shipping. It may now be cheaper buying it at your local Wal-mart. Do your research before buying!

Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack 600 Jump Starter & Emergency Power Source with Radio Review

Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack 600 Jump Starter & Emergency Power Source with Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this for extended camping trips. We frequently find ourselves at events that require camping out, and with limited or no electrical.I wanted something that could supply power to our wide variety of gadgets that we typically need as a modern family.

Put the Powerpack to the test on a full week trip recently.Through the whole week, it was used for a number of purposes.Including, recharging cell phones, camera batteries, various media devices. It also was used to power a compressor to air up 3 different air mattress (including a queen), and refill them as needed. It also ran a hair straightener and blow dryer a few times. And it was used to run a breathing treatment machine for a friends asthma at least once a day.Might have been used for other things.

The results. The Powerpack lasted through day 5 of a 7 day trip, but we had brought along a lawn battery to attach as a backup. It was simple to setup, and the provided the power we needed for the last 2 days. The main battery lasted about as long as I thought it would, so I was satisified throughout.

The reasons why it didn't get 5 stars. Two reasons, and both kinda minor. One, no way to turn off the clock.I know its not much of a drain on a battery this size, but I would prefer to maximize my usuage. And two, the power meter is no super accurate. It showed 90% power on Day 4, 70% power on day 5, only to be out of power come the morning of day 6.

To be fair though, a few things where plugged into it overnight from day 5 to 6.Those items where low power or turned off.So its hard to say if they caused the drain.Maybe if they hadn't been plugged in, the main battery would have lasted all week.

Overall, very happy with the purchase.
