(More customer reviews)I have the Mio C230 for about a month now. I have to say it was not very easy to use, but after a couple of hours, I was able to find my way around it. This is my third GPS, I have a Garmin C340 for almost two years, and a Nuvi 370 for about eight months; so I can say that I have a bit of experience with the Garmin products which considered to be one of the best GPS in the market. The only reason I got the Mio is the ability to add multiple stops to your final destination (Via Points), and the Mio's ability to optimize the route for you, a feature not available in the Garmin products. My girlfriend is a realtor, and she makes numerous stops to show houses to her clients; with the Garmin, she had to enter one stop at the time, which means that she might be going back and forth or zig zaging around; with the Mio, all she has to do is to input as many addresses as she needs to, and then the Mio will optimize the route and guide her around, cool.
You can enter address either by state / city / street; or you can use zip code / street; very nice feature. Any address you input will be automatically stored in the history and you can retrieve it at any time; you can also copy everything to the SD card and store it in your computer or use the data in another Mio, cool. If you don't have the address but know where your destination is on the map, you can touch that point on the map, and the Mio will take you there.
There is also an icon for "Home" where you can store your home address, by clicking it, the Mio will take you home, a similar one is for "work". You can rename both if needed.
The detailed information available on the screen in "cockpit mode" is impressive, on the upper left corner it shows the next maneuver (an arrow going right or left), below that it shows the distance to that maneuver and the estimated time of arrival to your final destination. Next to that you have four icons to zoom in and out on the map, and to change the view from 2 to 3 dimensions and vise versa. Another nice feature is the pedestrian mode, in that mode; the Mio will take you thru the shortest route ignoring the traffic direction of one way streets. You can customize the Mio for brighter screen or to get louder if you reach a specific speed; routing can be customized to shortest, fastest or economical. You can avoid Toll roads, U turns, unpaved roads, Highways, etc.
The Text to Speech feature is also a definite plus. The only thing that I really don't like in the Mio C230 is the very limited number of POI's (about 900K), you will hardly be able to find anything in there, Mio needs to do smoothing about that limitation. However, you can add you own POI's to the data base if you know the address.
In short, if you don't need the MP3/Photo player, or the blue tooth; then the Mio C230 is the one for you. It is a great basic GPS, loaded with features that may not be available on other big name brands. Impressive signal reception, bright screen, clear TTS voice, nice design, pocket size, at an unbeatable price.

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters Review

(More customer reviews)I received this unit for Christmas primarily for my bike, but once I purchase the car mount adapter it will be used in the car as well.

This is an excellent unit, to say the least.One reviewer mentioned that it's too difficult to turn the unit on- I say "hogwash".The pushbutton is stiff, yes, but that's done to keep the unit from turning on accidentally while in your jacket pocket or carry bag (and with a touch screen, you can well imagine how much mischief one could accidentally create if it turned on without your knowledge).Ditto with the Scala Rider headset- you don't want the thing accidentally turning on, running the battery down, do you?

Another reviewer mentioned that it doesn't have a "speedometer" or trip meter function- it most certainly does have a speedometer, and what I assume is the "trip meter"- but since TomTom set the unit from the factory to eliminate as much extraneous information as possible, you have to activate it in the menus.Once that has been activated, it'll be there until you turn that feature off.In fact, there are a great number of features you can turn on and off in the menus.

I found the documentation to be adequate, and to the point.The printed documentation is to get you up to speed until you charge the units and turn them on- it's easy sailing after that.The unit is very easy to use, and it has tutorials right on the unit, so in my opinion further paper documentation is rather redundant- actually, I think it's pretty smart on TomTom's part to include tutorials on the unit itself rather than supply a printed book- that way I don't have to carry around the book, as all of the information is already on the unit!They really don't say much about the bike power cable, but I can certainly understand why- it's not possible to provide information about every bike out there, and if you aren't familiar enough with your bike, or can't figure out how to install it, it's probably best to get someone who is (like your bike dealer) to do the installation.

I've got a Motorolla Razr phone, and the TomTom easily hooked up to my phone via Bluetooth, and it painlessly downloaded all of my phone numbers I have stored on the phone (thank you for providing this helpful feature!).

I do wish that it gave the street name when it gives you instructions to turn, but I soon got used to how it works- not only does the display give you very clear instructions on where to turn, it also gives you the street name.Once you get used to it, it's easy.But I would like the option of hearing the street name (my PDA does, but the map display isn't as easy to see as the TomTom).While playing with the unit as my father-in-law drove the car, I discovered one potential issue with having the street name spoken to you- what happens when the street name is changed, but your maps haven't been updated?If you rely on the spoken street name, you might miss it- it's best to take a glance at the screen to make sure you're taking the correct turn (I found one such road- the name has recently been changed, but the map showed the old name instead).Still, I'd prefer to have it spoken, and visually double-check the map.

Overall, I give the TomTom an A-.TomTom, if you're reading this, I'll give you an A+ if you guys update the software so that it'll give you the street name by voice- then you'll have the best bike GPS available!However, I'd still buy the unit as is.It would just increase the functionality by including this feature.

TomTom XL 340 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)As soon as I bought it we went from MD to NJ so had no time to connect it to a PC and update it, but out of the box it did everything it was supposed to and was fairly easy to use (this is my first GPS device that I have used).

The instructions that came with it were nothing special and I have since discovered more detailed ones online. I liked that the GPS had the speed we were going and the speed limit of the road you are on in a box at the bottom of the screen which turns red when you are going around 4.5 miles over the limit. One time it stated the limit as 55 when it was really 65 on the NJ turnpike but this was before doing a map update and in any case you can correct it on the device itself and the next time you connect to tomtom online it uploads that information to the general community as you have the option of accepting other people's corrections (you can limit it to when many people submit the same correction instead of trusting a single person's report and by default it will only accept Tomtom's officially confirmed corrections). We also loved the lane assist feature - it comes up nice and clear which lanes you should be in. 2 miles before a turn it already announces what you will be doing and it re-announces it when you get closer and closer. Adjusting the sound level is a 2 touch operation. You press the bottom left part of the screen (can't remember what the image is now) and it brings you straight to the volume level which also has a box checked that allows it to increase the volume with the speed your vehicle is going at which is nice.

The only glitch we had with the unit was that during the first start up we were setting the different options and when it got to where you choose the voice, we began testing out each voice and then went back to the voice we wanted and when I hit the "test" button again I didn't hear anything but ignored that and selected the voice. After a while though it became apparent that we were not getting any voice despite the volume being on and up etc. I went in to the preferences and found the voice selection (the manual in the box was not detailed enough to tell how to do it but it was easy enough to find) and chose another voice which tested okay then reselected the one we wanted which also tested okay and selected it again and all was well.

When I got home I installed the Tomtom Home software from their website (it did not auto install after plugging it in to my PC which was good because it was better to use the latest version anyway - it can be updated after installing so don't worry about that). Whilst doing the maps update I did a little searching around and discovered that some people had a big problem doing the 1st update where there was not enough room on the device for it and it could potentially cause problems on the GPS. Thankfully, it seems to be a problem that was fixed and the map update went well. But in line with some advise online, I went into the device through windows explorer and did a copy and paste of the entire drive which represented the device pasted to my harddrive as a backup (the Tomtom home software can also do this for you, except mine was updating so I couldn't use it yet). My only surprise was that it took over 5 hours to download the update! After that it gave me a screen full of other updates including the software on the GPS itself. I initially deselected the install of the "Dave" voice update that it wanted to download and install, and all the rest went okay. After that though, I decided to update the "Dave" voice too and after downloading it gave me an error that the GPS was too full to install it. I went to the Tomtom site and found the answer to installing it. You load the Tomtom Home software and you can click on "Manage my Device" on page 2 (click the arrow to go to next page of options), from there you can click on on the device and see what is on it and click what you don't want so space is freed up and you can back the files up and then remove them all from there (I removed all the foreign language voices for around an extra 80MB of free space ). After that, installing the latest "Dave" voice went without a hitch. Since I don't use that voice I didn't really have to update it. Apparently the voices marked "computer" (generated) on the device will pronounce all the street names while the natural voices will not. It seems to have a lot of flexibility in being able to add your own list of POI's, voices and many other things. You can also get through the Tomtom Home software many other POI's and stuff other people have provided for free.

So far I am pleased with the purchase and would recommend it to others though probably not at the recommended retail price (at that price you can get a deal on the Garmin 765T - which has many nice features including free traffic reports - not sure how that compares to Tomtom's IQ routes though. We bought ours on Black Friday for a significant price reduction).

Pros:

1.Finds your location within seconds of turning it on.
2.The only time it loses its location is inside a tunnel.
3.Very nice display.Maps and fonts are very clear.
4.Calculates your route in a couple of seconds.
5.Does a nice and logical job of calculating the best route, most of the time.
6.Entering addresses is very easy.

Cons:

1.Battery life in the spec is 4 hours.I can only really get 2-3 hours out of it.
2.After it calculates your route, you can tell it to avoid a road, and it will recalculate a different way.BUT, you cannot detour a road that you are on.So if you are sitting in traffic on the highway, you cannot tell it to recalculate and completely avoid the road you are on.
3.For some reason, it like to calculate routes by getting you off of the highway as fast as possible and have you take more city streets.So, if it is a little farther to take the highway to your destination, but is quicker due to highway speeds, it will still route you through city streets, because it is shorter even though you would be moving at city speeds.
4.It does not remember the contrast setting.Every time you power it on, it is at full contrast, which doesn't help the already short battery life.
5.The volume of the voice is too low, even at full volume.

This is a very good unit, and you get a lot of useful features for the price.

(More customer reviews)I'm not sure you could do much better than this for the price. I bought it on sale, more than a little anxious about the quality of the resolution, the touch-screen interface, the accuracy of the GPS, etc. I have been VERY impressed with this unit.

One of the things I like best is its built-in rechargeable battery. This precludes the necessity of having cords hanging all over your dashboard, and is a very nice touch. The battery lasts well over 3 hours on a single charge (I drove for 3.5 hours once on a charge and 25% still remained), and both AC and DC/cigarette lighter adapters are included for charging at home or on the go.

The 3.5" screen is large enough -- and resolution clear enough -- to allow easy reading as well as a good bit of detailed information to be displayed at any one time. The touch screen is easily calibrated and remains quite accurate. Even when typing in letters for a street name, I seldom "fat finger" a virtual button. The display is bright and crisp, and easily readable, even in bright (indirect) sunshine. I use this in a SUV with a sunroof, and also in a car with t-tops and even with the tops out on a sunny day, it's easy to read the display -- and that's not even at its fullest brightness! There is an "auto" setting that will dim the display automatically at night... nice touch. Colors on the display are good and saturated and contrasted appropriately (you can change the overall background or color scheme between four different colors). Viewing can be toggled between a regular view and a "3D" angled-type view in one of three different angles. You can also select whether you want the orientation of the map to be "north" (where north is always up) or "heading" (where the map turns as you drive so you're always moving towards the top of the screen). At any point in map mode, you can "pan" by touching and dragging the map. Very cool.

The flexible holding arm attaches to a cradle and terminates in a rock-solid clampable suction cup. Not once -- even going over rough railroad tracks or off-roading in the Jeep -- has this suction ever broken off my windshield in days and days of continuous attachment. An adhesive-backed disc is also included for dash mounting (you would then suction the arm to the disc). One nice touch is that the GPS unit itself is very easily removed from the cradle... good for security when you're out of your car.

The excellent Navteq software is Windows CE-based.

The GPS signal acquisition takes a couple of minutes from a cold start, less from a warm start (if the unit has been turned off, then turned back on in a short while). I'd call the acquisition time slightly better than average of the GPS units I've used. Once acquired, however, this unit is VERY accurate, typically even locking in signals from 5 or more satellites while indoors. Both the maps and the displayed speed are right on the money, and the turn-by-turn navigation instructions (delivered audibly and visually) are accurate as well. The voice used is smooth and reasonably clear (female voice). You can set the unit to provide all kinds of routes... quickest route, shortest route, routes using or avoiding major roads when possible, routes including ferries or toll roads, routes using or excluding HOV lanes... goodness. When navigating, if you miss a turn, the route is recalculated within a few seconds. You can also look at a route list and avoid a specific road on the list, after which the route will be recalculated.

Points of interest are numerous (1.6 million) and highly usable. There are shortcuts to the more common POIs such as restaurants, ATMs, gas stations, etc. By touching any of these buttons, the display will show you the nearest POIs sorted by distance from your current location. You can also store favorite locations and a "home" location for easy retrieval. Navigation to any of these points, once selected, is as easy as touching one button.

There are some pretty neat ancillary features as well. Of course you can display everything in standard or metric measurements. The GPS info screen shows you the signal strength of each satellite from which a signal is being received as well as your exact latitude and longitude (with a minimum of 3 satellites' signals locked in), altitude (minimum of 4), and speed. I wish you could display the altitude on the main mapping screen, but that's not an option.I'd rather see the altitude there than the time.Perhaps that could be addressed in a firmware update? :)You can set a "speed alert" as well, to warn you if you exceed a preselected speed. You can even choose "auto speed," which uses the type of road you're on to determine the most likely speed limit. Not sure how useful this is, but it's a neat option.

Included in the box are the GPS unit itself (mine came ready-to-go with about a 30% charge), an AC power adapter, a DC car adapter, the windshield suction-mount bracket, a mounting cradle, the dashboard mounting disc, a touch-screen stylus (slides into the upper rear of the GPS unit; I doubt I'll use it much, but there it is), a USB cable, a nice storage pouch, and two owner's guides -- one for the software and one for the hardware. To my surprise (since I didn't read the original description carefully enough), there is also a very nice remote control (with battery) included that duplicates virtually every function of the menu and touch screen on the main unit. It has seven buttons and a four-way circular rocker switch with the typical "OK" button in the middle.I virtually never use the remote, but I suppose it's nice to have, all the same.

A stereo headphone jack is on the right side and allows connection to anything with a 1/8" input jack. I plan on testing this out with my car stereo as it has an auxiliary input jack on the face. I can store hundreds of MP3s on an SD card and away I go! Any navigation audio prompts are played through the car stereo in this set-up, as well.

The user interface is very, very good. The printed user guide isn't necessary at all for basic operation and navigation; however, for some of the more advanced features, the guide is helpful. The MP3 player's interface is wonderful... very intuitive. Loading songs into the playlist is a bit cumbersome, but not overly so, and I didn't buy this to be used as an MP3 player anyway.

The GPS antenna on the rear of the unit swings back and forth, so you can adjust it to improve reception. It also has a jack for an optional external GPS antenna. They thought of everything! Future firmware and mapping updates can be done via either the USB connection (and a computer) or maybe even downloaded onto an SD card.

I can't recommend this unit highly enough. Even at full price ($200) it would be worth it. When it's on sale, though, it becomes an astounding bargain. No buyer's remorse on this product whatsoever!

(More customer reviews)I've owned Garmin's for more than 5 years and I currently own a NUVI 760. I've heard the great news about the TOMTOM 930 with IQROUTES, lane guidance, and the HOME feature so I decided to buy the 930 so I can give it a spin and compare it to the NUVI 760 with MSN DIRECT.

TOMTOM Pluses:
Arrival time -
The arrival time with IQROUTES are MORE accurate than Garmin's. The NUVI keeps updating the arrival time during the trip. I compared the arrival time from the start and the TOMTOM was more accurate. TOMTOM is constantly collecting the travel times and updating their database. When you sign in to the HOME program the IQroutes from your trips are uploaded to the TOMTOM server.

Routes:
If anyone writes a review about a GPS and states that routes are 100% accurate then they are lieing, I have not found the perfect GPS with perfect routes.
The routes on both the 930 and the NUVI 760 have been identical. With the 930 I see minutes left on the trip, time left, and arrival time. I can even tell the 930 what time I would like to arrive at my destination.I can AVOID any of the roads on my trip. You CANNOT avoid roads on the NUVI 760.

TRAFFIC:

I'm using traffic on the 930 through my ATT Tilt phone and it seems to work and it is accurate. It uses my Tilt to access the traffic on the TOMTOM server through the Internet. If you have cell coverage you should have traffic data.
MSN Traffic on the 760 is not accurate and the avoidance feature does not work that well. The bad thing about the MSN Direct feature is that it does not have good range. I live in Chicago and the service does not work in many of the outlying suburbs.

PLUSES:
Iqroutes are more accurate than the NUVI.
Lane guidance works in my area.
Avoiding roads on your trip.
Being able to correct street names, closed streets, one ways, and many other errors is a big plus.
Traffic works well.
The GPS chip has not lost reception. I've lost the signal numerous times on the NUVI.
More information on the 930 screen than on the 760.

TOMTOM minuses:
The screen is hard to see in sunlight.
The maps are not bad since I loaded the Garmin map look on the 930. I even have the magenta route line on my 930.
The battery does not last more than 1 hour.
The Text to speech does not work all the time. The street names are not pronounced as good as the NUVI.
You don't get the constant reminders that the NUVI 760 provides. Sometimes I don't think that I drive the 930 with my eyes close. With the 760 you can close your eyes and not miss a turn.
I cannot locate an address by ANY city like the NUVI. Sometimes the 930 cannot locate an address if it thinks it's in a different city. You have to input the surrounding city names to get the correct address and route.

TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using my TomTom ONE for a week and a half or so and overall, I'm quite happy with it.Out of the box or after having been moved a significant distance while off, the unit takes about a minute or so at most to determine its position.From a warm start, it's usually a matter of seconds.

Route calculations are generally finished quickly, as are recalculations when you fail to follow the route.Since the shortest rout distance-wise isn't always the fastest, I've diverted from the TomTom's original route and it usually recalculated a new route within moments of me going 'off course.'

I've only run across a couple downsides to the TomTom ONE, neither of which is too serious.First, the maps (at least in the DC/MD/VA metro area) are a few years out of date.There are a number of roads which just aren't in the unit's database.Some streets 'lose' their name for some reason.For example, one section of a street on the map may be labeled as 'Main Street' and another part of the same street may be "Unnamed Road."City names can be kind of iffy as well.When trying to input a specific address, I've often had to resort to entering the address by zip code since the TomTom's map database considers my home to be in a neighboring city name-wise and it won't find my street name in the city in which I actually live.

The second thing that kept me from giving the device 5 stars is the client interface on the computer.The client is supposed to allow the user to access the ONE and perform certain functions on-screen, but apparently is missing some component to actually emulate the unit.I've not gotten a response from TomTom regarding the problem, but have read elsewhere online that they know there's an issue with the client.

Overall, the TomTom ONE is a very nice, basic navigation system.Updated maps and a fixed version of the PC client software will hopefully be forthcoming and would make it a 5 star product.

(More customer reviews)Warning, this unit is riddled with so many problems, I can't even get customer service to reply. The auto reply says they are swamped with complaints, once they did respond, but only to the part of no manual, sent a link, but it was not the correct one, they chose to ignore all the problems with the unit. Addresses are way off, some as much as a mile. Many roads are not on the unit, even with the latest update some neighborhood that are 3-5 years old do not exist. It shows roads that do not exist? Unit consistantly picks much longer, time consuming routes. Many streets are misnamed, many roads have county number on the gps, yet the road has had a name for 15 years. Told me to go straight at a fork in the road? One road, probably 15 miles long, unit said it had no numbers for the road, so you had to ride for miles looking at mail boxes, and yes, it was a old road, places had been there for many years.
Memory is almost full, and there is no memory slot to add more, very poor planning. It is slow updating your actual speed. You have to set the time, but other brands do this for you. Road name only show up a few seconds, leaving no time to plan on turning. Speed limit is useless, only good mainly on interstate, yet other brands have speed limits on secondary roads. Going down the ramp to get on a interstate, it says to turn left? Guess thats why all those slow drivers are in the left lane! Can't delete individual temp go to locations, have to delete all. Has several nice voices, yet only compter voice gives street names. They don't even have a manual for this unit. I could go on, as there are about a dozen other issues with this brand, but save yourdelf the trouble, get something else. These are just a few of the problems found in the first 2 weeks,Ok, its not all bad, 5" screen is nice, volume is better than many, now, only if it could get me there. I had to order a different brand as this one could not get me to most places.My new Garmin gets me there.

First off, the Bluetooth connectivity makes this product a winner in itself.The phone calls are crystal-clear with my Ericsson T637.Callers also say they can hear me perfectly.The connectivity is awesome, plus with web access on your mobile, you can collect current weather and traffic data from TomTom.The voices are loud and clear, and the 3D navigation outperforms the Garmin.

Navigation-wise, the product is also awesome.Route planning is easy and intuitive.If you don't like a certain route, you can select alternate routes on-the-fly.You can select from a large number of route views (text only, map, both, etc.), and route demos can be sped up or slowed down (unlike c330).

Other awesome features include tips and tutorials for learning the intracacies of the product.You can also download new voices to the device (such as John Cleese) for added customizability.This is so much fun!The features go on and on....

All in all, this is a significant improvement over the Garmin c330.It adds all the functions I wished were available on the Garmin.This is so greatly customizable and easy-to-use.I consider it the Mac version of GPS car navigation.

One week later...

After owning the product for a week, I decided to return it.I had a few issues with the unit powering up; I needed to reset it several times.I also found a few annoyances with looking up points of interest.Unlike the Garmin, you must first select a category before searching for a POI.This made it impossible to search for Dry Cleaners, Banks, and many other very necessary locations!

Map data is also a bit outdated.Entering my office address didn't work on the unit.It only registered a certain range of "house" numbers, with mine not being one of them.TomTom also uses TeleAtlas maps, which (in my opinion) are not as nice as Garmin's NAVTEQ ones.They both work, but I find usability easier and more efficient on the Garmin.

Also, reading cell phone text messages via the unit was practically useless.Messages were encoded with a string of strange text before the actual body of the message.

Many fun features (such as Traffic & new POI's) are not yet available in the US, either.This product is a little bit of everything rolled into one.It's a really cool unit, with tons of features, but I think it's a bit flawed.I hope TomTom continues to support many of the features it advertses (Weather, Traffic, Voices, etc.).

(More customer reviews)First of all the good news.The display and automatic panning on the Tom Tom 910 are second to none.It is MUCH more visible than the Garmin Nuvi 350 and the automatic panning works much better.The actual mapping algorithms seemed to be approximately the same in both units neither, insofar as I was able to determine, having much of an advantage over the other.Mapping details on both units are excellent.Bright light visibility is outstanding - much better than the Nuvi.

The unit, compared to the Nuvi 350 and 360 is considerably larger and more cumbersome.Additionally, the mounting solution on the Nuvi is slightly better than that on the 910 - more compact.The voice prompts are loud, clear and timely. The ease of use is just great (with the exception of the POI implementation) and the visibility and quality of the display are great.

The bad news:POI access is cumbersome and poorly implemented.Hopefully a firmware upgrade will fix this problem in the near future.As it stands now, you cannot enter the name of the POI that you wish to go to without going through an intervening category screen made even more cumbersome by the fact that you may guess the category wrong!Then, the POIs only come up in alphabetical order or by distance.For me, this particular deficiency was the deal breaker.Selecting a POI must be as simple as possible in a AIO (all in one) GPS navigation solution.There are so many capabilities that you give up in these simplified AIO solutions that they should perform their designated functions easily and efficiently.The Nuvi does this, the 910 does not.The nuvi allows you to search POIs by name. The TomTom 910 does not.

This device is intended as an extremely simple point to point navigating AIO GPS navigation solution and is not intended to enable the use of way points or easily changing the course selected by the unit. You have essentially two options: the shortest route and the fastest route. Fortunately, the mapping program selects routs that are very acceptable. Personally, I like to look at the overall route and fiddle with it. This unit is not designed for such use. Microsoft Streets and Trips is ideal for this kind of tinkering, but terrible for point to point navigation while on the go.

Make sure and get the most recent firmware updates on the Tom Tom website which will fix the known bugs and further improve the functionality.

I give this unit a 3 star on form (compared to the elegant Nuvi), a 4 star on the functionality for which it was designed, and a 5 star on the beautiful bright display. You will not be disappointed in the beautiful display, the automatic panning, the actual map functionality or the bright light performance.But the POI solution is cumbersome and frustrating.

(More customer reviews)I bought this unit after shopping around for an entry-level GPS. I had seen this particular item in the UK (where it is extremely popular) and knew ViaMichelin were finally about to release a US version. For those who didn't know, this product is from Michelin (yup, the tire company). It's a great unit, and the price is unbeatable for what you get. First and foremost, this is a GPS unit - not an MP3 player, audio book player, storage hard-drive or picture viewer. It has been made to do exactly what it should do - give directions. I appreciate the other little 'bonuses' but is it really worth the extra cost?

This unit has the usual 3.5" screen which is very clear and anti-glare. The supplied windshield and dash mounts are very handy and well-designed, but I haven't really needed to use them just yet - I usually just place it in a small storage area I have right below my console.

What is really nice about this unit is its size and weight. It is unbelieveably light and extremely portable. You can just slip it in your pocket and take it with you. I found this one of the nicest features since I wanted the option of taking it with me if I choose to - a great feature is being able to switch between vehicle and pedestrian modes.

There are four buttons on the side that let you choose options, and the volume button is the left. The software is simple and very easy to use, with just three main items on the home screen - no complicated menus here. Entry is via touchscreen and you can either use your finger or the provided stylus that conveniently stores behind the unit. If you have large fingers, it might be hard to input details without making mistakes.

Since the unit has an integrated antenna and uses the SiRF Star III technology, satellite access is extremely quick. Route calculation and re-calculation is quick and the voice direction is clear and loud. Plenty of information is displayed on screen, without being overwhelming, and you can choose 2D or 3D views. The unit DOES display street names (or street direction), you just have to turn them on in the 'settings' area (mind you this is only on the 2D display map, not on the actual directions map). POI's are great too, doesn't seem to be missing anything major so far. I had no problems with the maps being that out of date in my area (despite extensive roadwork), but I did run into one area where roads had changed - the unit re-routes very quickly though.

The 1GB SD card that is included is all you need to get started since it has detailed maps of all 50 states (Alaska & Hawaii ARE included - to correct the Amazon review. To change to Alaska or Hawaii, you just select 'change map' under the 'map' icon under 'settings'), and the supplied DVD-ROM for Canada is useful if you end up heading that way. If I ever do that, I'll probably buy another 1GB SD card and load the data from the DVD-ROM.

I agree with the Amazon review that the main con is the lack of being able to backup and correct after entering a mistake, but it's not that big of a deal. The keyboard not being in QWERTY format actually made it easier for me. I only find that format handy on something you can use both hands to type. So, since that is really the ONLY negative thing I've noticed with this item, it deserves the five-star rating.

Overall, this item is an amazing little unit for the price. It has most of the features of more expensive units, for a fraction of the moolah. For anyone wanting to try out a solid GPS unit and do not mind not having (or paying for) the ability to play MP3's, etc., then this is the perfect unit for you!

I've had a chance to use the 920 for about 6 months of heavy use and here's an update to my prior review:

1) Mapshare really works.It's great to get updates from users all over the country.What a great idea.
2) Map updates have refined the product over time.I got the 920 when it came with the original 920 maps.Mine had the 1 year map guarantee, so I have now gotten about 3-4 map upgrades (I forget the exact #) and with each update the maps have improved.The application has also improved.The latest 920 app and maps include Lane Assist and Intelligent Routing which come standard on the 930.

Lane assist is like Reality View on Navigons. You get a very nice highway view with clearly delineated flashing lanes that tell you which lanes to stay in.So, if you are on a 5 lane highway and you should stay in any of the 3 left lanes, Lane Assist will clearly show you that.

I have not had a chance to compare the IQ Routes to non-IQ routes as I just figured out how to turn IQ routes off in order to do the comparison yesterday; but the new routes have served me very well in terms of minimizing time. IQ Routes take traffic data from different times and days that are accumulated in a data base and use that to predict the best route.This isn't very intuitive to me, since I would think that the Traffic function would do that better; but maybe this works best for situations where there are no traffic sensors or you can't access the Traffic features.
3) Cell Phone Traffic.Let's you connect the TT920 to your cell phone (mine is Sprint) and downloads traffic in near realtime.I have noticed lately, with the latest mapset, that it is predicting delays, when in fact there aren't any; but don't know if that's because the traffic conditions are changing and there were delays.It is certainly possible because I find that this occurs in construction zones.It might also be a function of IQ routes.I need to investigate this further now that I can turn IQ routes off.

Biggest complaints:

Because of the primitive data entry interface described below, I have found the need to use my cellphone's GPS function to locate POI's and addresses, and then use the TT for routing on many occassions.This is so absolutely ridiculous for such an expensive and premium device in other ways. It's really a shame that TT can't / won't address these issues.

1) You need to know the something about your POI before you can search for it, so you need to enter the city, or the route first.You can't just search for Grand Canyon; you need to know it's in Arizona.

2) Brain dead address entry. This is where Magellan and Garmin are worlds ahead of TomTom.There are millions of address of the form ##A### such as 12W234 and these can't be entered into a TomTom. You won't be able to navigate to these locations; you'll need to know a cross street, perhaps, but how would you know that? Why can't they fix this?

3) Need to know a City to enter an address.Again, an absolutely dumb idea.In suburban areas, a street can pass through multiple communities.Needing to know the City to enter an address makes no sense.Both Magellan and Garmin figured that out years ago.

So, while TT has evolved in many positive ways, it is still very primitive in the way it handles some basic navigation data entry.

Edited 2/14/2008 TT Home reported a new European Map available for the TT920.So, in the process of downloading this I have some interesting observations.

1) A distinct TT advantage, and one I really hadn't thought much about since my 920 is only a few months old, is that Map Updates are downloadable.With Garmin you have to order a DVD.For my i5 it took weeks for the DVD to arrive.

2) But even more interesting than that is that the new Euro maps would not fit on my TT920.It said I needed to delete 110MB to free up enough space, but I didn't have 110MB of stuff to delete. So, now I thought I had a real problem.What I found out is that there is a feature in the TT920 that neither my Garmin 360 or Magellan 4250 have.

Specifically, I put in a blank 8GB SDHC card into the TT.I selected removable drive from TThome. I then downloaded the update to the TT DOWNLOAD folder on the HDD of my PC.

I then formatted the 8GB card to 4GB while it was inside the TT.I then went to Files on My Computer and ADDED the new Euro Map to the 4GB SD card.I copied the contents of the 4GB SD card to my HDD.I then removed the SD card from the TT and reformatted it to 8GB on my PC.I then copied the the contents on my HDD that I copied from the 4GB card to the 8GB card and inserted the 8GB card into the TT

3) At this point, TT920 recognizes Guam, North America and Western and Central Europe.

4) The real impact here is that I can hold 10GB of maps between the internal and removable flash.This is great news.On my Garmin 360, for example, if the North America maps exceed 2 GB, then you have to split the installation of Upper Canada and Lower 48 US.You can't just switch between them, you have to reload the maps.On the i5, I can drag and drop upper and lower maps, but again, can't have both on at the same time.

5) So, the SD cards on the two Garmins I have really serve no purpose for mapping and navigation, whereas on TT the SD card can be an extension of the internal memory.What a great design.

As you are probably aware, with the release of the 2008 maps, Many Garmin units ran short of internal memory to handle the larger maps, requiring the splitting of Upper and Lower north america.This is far less likely to happen on TT920's.SD cards on the Magellan are for backup only and custom POI's.

Well, there is a serious problem with the TTx20's.This may be enough to take them off of your short list.I am debating what to do here.The situation has to do with address numbers.TT does fine with an address in the form of, say, nnn street address.Like 414 Janes Street.What it can't handle is any street number that has something OTHER THAN A NUMBER in it, like 55N123 Anystreet, Anytown, CO.There is no way to enter 55N123, because all you can enter are NUMBERS, not the letter "N".Now this might not be so bad, but I'd guess there are millions of addresses that either have a special character, like a hyphen "-" or a letter N, S, E, W, embedded in the street number.

Both the Garmins and Magellans referenced above, can handle the forms of address numbers that have alpha+numeric combinations.Others who have reported this to TomTom say that the problem is known, but there is no indication as to when or even if TT plans on fixing it.

So, if the TT920 didn't have that nifty Bluetooth Traffic feature, I would go with the Garmin i3... or the Magellan 4250. I can buy 4 i3's or 1.6 4250's for the price of 1 TT920.I should note that the TT720 has the same feature, but I got the TT920 for just about the same price as a TT720.The price has now gone up $90 on the 920 in the last 30 days.=======================================================================

During a recent illness I think I read nearly every review of the most popular GPS's on the market.I also have had the chance to use

Garmin i5, 200, 360, 550, 680.
Magellan 4050, 4250
TomTom 720, 920
Navigon 2100t

I bought the i5 for my daughter, the 200 for my mother, and the 920 for me.Different markets, different needs.

After reading all reviews and using these products I have concluded that there is a cult-like following for GPS's.There's the Garmin, TOMTOM and Magellan Cults. Probably the Mio, Sony, HP and other cults that I am not following as well.They will banter and chatter on the relative merits and demerits of the various technologies.In the end, the following summarizes my analysis of the comments and products.Note that for the most part when you look at the distribution of Positive and Negative comments, there is almost always a plurality of positive comments for all units.I attribute some of this to the Cult-Status of GPS's

1) They **all** produce goofy routes at times, but overall work about the same.If you had the choice of either having any one of these or not having anything, I'd take any of them.One needs to acquaint ones self with the manual in order to get all of the value out of the products.They all do some things in arcane ways, at times, so it may not be obvious how to make it do what you want it to do.Even the easy to learn Nuvi's have some cryptic functionality.

2) None of the maps are 100% accurate, but all are pretty good. I don't see a big difference between products based on Navteq and TeleAtlas maps, considering all the chatter that is written about Navteq being better than TeleAtlas. There are probably differences in maps, algorithms, routing engines, etc. that all play a part in determining the optimal route, but they all do pretty good on average and badly at times.

3) The best value for a basic GPS is the GARMIN i3 which can be had for $100 refurbed with 1 yr Garmin warranty. The i5 is about $130, also a great deal. If you have expensive nails (ladies) it's nice because it has a touch wheel instead of touch screen. It also runs on 2-AA batteries... slick.
