Navigon 2200T 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Navigon 2200T 3.5 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So far I am REALLY happy with the Navigon 2200t.I kept going back and forth between the 2200t and the 7200t.Although the 4.2" widescreen on the 7200t is nice I didn't need the bluetooth capability since my car already has it.

The 3.5" screen on the 2200t is plenty large and easy to read and type on.It would be nice if it had a QWERTY keyboard onscreen but the keyboard is intelligent only displaying relevant keys.I had no problem typing my destinations error free.

One of the complaints I read about past Navigon units was slow performance for GPS acquision, routing, and the menu system. That issue has absolutely been resolved with the new Navigon line. The menus are quick and the GPS locks on almost instantly. The traffic features are nice to have especially here in Atlanta. The speaker is surprisingly loud and clear when speaking the directions.

The reality view is a really nice feature when navigating complicated highway junctions and was one of the reasons I went with Navigon.Although I just received the unit I am very pleased with the build quality, performance, and routing so far.Its really a great deal considering similiar features are hundreds of dollars more with TomTom and Garmin units.

My only complaint would be the directions included in the box are pretty poor (just a quick start guide).I had to get on the Navigon website to download the full instructions. Not a big deal though.

Overall I am very happy so far and highly recommend the Navigon 2200t.

TomTom XXL 550M 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Maps Edition) Review

TomTom XXL 550M 5 inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Warning, this unit is riddled with so many problems, I can't even get customer service to reply. The auto reply says they are swamped with complaints, once they did respond, but only to the part of no manual, sent a link, but it was not the correct one, they chose to ignore all the problems with the unit. Addresses are way off, some as much as a mile. Many roads are not on the unit, even with the latest update some neighborhood that are 3-5 years old do not exist. It shows roads that do not exist? Unit consistantly picks much longer, time consuming routes. Many streets are misnamed, many roads have county number on the gps, yet the road has had a name for 15 years. Told me to go straight at a fork in the road? One road, probably 15 miles long, unit said it had no numbers for the road, so you had to ride for miles looking at mail boxes, and yes, it was a old road, places had been there for many years.
Memory is almost full, and there is no memory slot to add more, very poor planning. It is slow updating your actual speed. You have to set the time, but other brands do this for you. Road name only show up a few seconds, leaving no time to plan on turning. Speed limit is useless, only good mainly on interstate, yet other brands have speed limits on secondary roads. Going down the ramp to get on a interstate, it says to turn left? Guess thats why all those slow drivers are in the left lane! Can't delete individual temp go to locations, have to delete all. Has several nice voices, yet only compter voice gives street names. They don't even have a manual for this unit. I could go on, as there are about a dozen other issues with this brand, but save yourdelf the trouble, get something else. These are just a few of the problems found in the first 2 weeks,Ok, its not all bad, 5" screen is nice, volume is better than many, now, only if it could get me there. I had to order a different brand as this one could not get me to most places. My new Garmin gets me there.

TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom ONE 130 3.5 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is the latest in TomTom technology. The TomTom 130.This latest development from TomTom will be perfect for first time GPS buyers who are looking for something simple, compact, and accurate. For previous owners of the TomTom One however, this is no reason to upgrade.

The product itself is as close to perfection as I've seen in a basic GPS device, hence the five star rating, but then again so is the TomTom One 3rd edition that was releasedlate last year. The TomTom 130 model is basically the TomTom One with a few minor upgrades. The most notable would be the new flip and fold mounting capability.Instead of the standard suction cup mount that TomTom owners are used to owning as a separate component (one that slides in and out of the back custom grooves of the TomTom itself) there is now an attached mount that folds into the unit for easy storage. This is convenient but in my opinion and like the other minor upgrades, no reason to toss out your old TomTom One in exchange.

iPod has set the standard for a lot of electronic thresholds, none being more noticeable than the size and depth of its products. To some it up...slim is in and the TomTom 130 is even slimmer than its big brother the TomTom One weighing in at a 6.1 ounces and only 1 inch in depth. Here are the some minor specs:

Unit Size: 3.8"H x 3.2"W x 1"D
Display Size: 3.5" (Diagonal)
Weight: 6.1 oz

Also worth noting is the TomTom 130 now boasts a 3 hour battery charge instead of the paltry 2 hour that left TomTom One owners completely dependent on the cigarette chargers in their cars.3 hours isn't exactly a wealth of time but it is an improvement and a little more realistic.

Also included with the product is TomTom's exclusive Map Share feature that allows users to make their own map corrections and share them with other TomTom customers through their online connection using the TomTom Home software on their PC.This service is free of charge.

Thishas been the subject of some confusion among TomTom users and should be pointed out. Some customers mistakenly think the Map Share updates they receive are entire map upgrades. This is not so.Although TomTom does provide its customers with Map Share updates free of charge these only include minor map modifications, such as dead end streets that weren't marked properly or points-of-interest that were marked out of place. These Map Share updates do not include the miles of new roads being built every year across America & Canada. In order to receive these major map updates customers will have to pay for them.

Of course the TomTom 130 will already come included with the latest Tele Atlas which is now version720.1802, and although TomTom has major map upgrades throughout the year most customers (including myself) will be content with just paying for an upgrade once a year. This guarantees that you will always have the latest maps with the newest roads.

Like the TomTom One 3rd Edition the TomTom 130 comes with a "Help Me" button which when pressed opens features such as "Phone For Help" which displays emergency numbers for the current location (such as and typically 911) "Drive To Help" which show you the quickest way to the nearest police station or hospital and a "First Aid Guide" which is provided by the British Red Cross.

Also included in the safety features is an option to sound a custom alarm if any of the following occur:

1. When approaching a school or church
2. When driving faster than a set speed
3. When driving faster than allowed

The 130 still uses the same TomTom touch screen user-interface so prior TomTom users will already be familiar with the controls but with such a user friendly design even new customers will have the hang of it in no time. The screen is a bright 3.5 inch full TFT color LCD with 320 x 240 pixels that supports 64K colors.

For first time GPS buyers this unit is perfect because of its price, portability, latest maps, outstanding user-interface, and simplicity. For someone looking to upgrade to something a little more advanced try the TomTom 130S with text-to-speech capability (verbal pronunciation of street names).

TomTom XXL 550 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom XXL 550 5 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: Tomtom has just released a software update that brings back some of the missing features to EasyMenu. Here are some of the features restored with the 9.150 update:

- Routing preferences (avoid highways, tolls, ferries, etc)
- Avoid part of route (by street)
- View route as text (and Route demo or pictures)
- POI (show on map, custom POIs)
- Volume options
- Brightness controls

However, a few other missing features have not yet been restored:

- Itinerary planning
- Compass options
- Dynamic brightness (dim between instructions when on batteries)
- A few other minor options

If you don't care about those missing items you can ignore the EasyMenu -> Full Menu conversion instructions mentioned in this review. At least we know that Tomtom is listening and are fixing the EasyMenu interface.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Original review:

If you have a choice between the XXL 540 and XXL 550, go with the cheapest. They are virtually the same, save for the inferior EasyMenu on the 550 (which can be remedied, as I'll explain below). In fact, if they are at the same price point, go with XXL 540 and save yourself the trouble of converting the "EasyMenu" to "Full menu".

I would normally use expletives to describe TomTom's new EasyMenu interface on their XL/XXL *50 models, but Amazon probably wouldn't like that very much. ;) Let's just say that EasyMenu is bad. Everyone hates it, and with good reason. It lacks every type of advanced customization you can think of, like proper routing (i.e. lacks toll road or highway avoidance preferences), route planning, itinerary, alternative routes, turn by turn text, the ability to disable IQ Routes, and many many other options that are available in the older XXL 540 and XL 340 versions. Yes, EasyMenu sucks. It's literally a dumbed down version of the original TomTOm menu. It is so limited that only your technologically impaired friend will be able to appreciate it. If you are one such person, I guess EasyMenu will be OK for you. EasyMenu's only pro is that it has sharper graphics, but I don't care much about sharpness when essential routing options are missing.

Unfortunately, TomTom decided to ship all their newest units with this dumbed down menu system. They apparently interviewed a bunch of people, and the interviewees said they don't care about anything other than getting from point A to point B. I guess TomTom took their word literally, and created the freakish EasyMenu.

So far it seems like this device is nothing but a failure, so why not give it 1 star? Well, the internet folk has figured out a way to enable the full menu on these newer EasyMenu-based TomToms, that's why! It's a very simple tweak, and can be done in less than a minute as long as you follow the instructions. I can't post links to the instructions here in the actual review, but you can find them in this review's comments section. Or you can search "easymenu menu options" on Google, and click on the first result.

Yep, you can enable the fully featured menu, if you care about any advanced option. All those features that were missing on the EasyMenu will now be enabled and fully functional. Proper routing, itinerary, advanced planning, road avoidance, advanced POI management, ability to turn off IQ Routes and all other options will be there. All these features are in fact already built in the preinstalled OS software. TomTom in all their wisdom chose to hide them. I don't understand this intentional dumbification, and the lack of a simple option to allow us more advanced users to enable the advanced functionality. But as long as there is a tweak to overcome that, I am happy.

In any case, the tweak is very, very simple. Simply create a text file called TomTom.mnu, copy paste the customized menu structure (follow the links and read the threads!), save the file, create a folder called "SdkRegistry" in your GPS navigator's root directory, and finally copy paste the "TomTom.mnu" file you created in there. If the file is present, EasyMenu is disabled and the full menu is enabled. If the file is not present (or has a different name), the full menu is disabled and EasyMenu is enabled. That simple. Just follow the instructions in the links found in the comments section.

After replacing the "EasyMenu" system with the full menu, this is what I gained:

- Route customization (ability to avoid a specific road)
- Itinerary (planning a route through multiple stops in a specific order)
- Ability to actually see a list of upcoming turns in text form. You can even play a demo of the route.
- Ability to avoid highways, toll roads, and other road types.
- Full Point of Interests management and customizations, including alerts.
- Compass, customization of data that's displayed in the main navigation view
- Backlight and Brightness options (yes, you can't change the brightness on EasyMenu)
- Audio warning customizations

These are all features that are missing from EasyMenu. And now I have them all enabled. The sleek new navigation interface is intact, and you get to use all these advanced options. Seriously, applying the tweak is a must.

Before you do anything though, backup, backup, BACKUP your device. You never know when something might go wrong. However, do NOT use
TomTom Home for that task (the backup feature has issues). Instead, copy-paste everything (including hidden files) manually from your
TomTom to your PC.

So think about it. This tweak literally makes the XXL 550... a XXL 540. But with the ability to switch between EasyMenu and Full Menu at anytime. Because if in the future TomTom wises up and adds those missing features to EasyMenu, you might want to switch back to it. ;)

A few thoughts about the hardware:

- The specs are exactly the same as XXL 540. If you have one of those, you already have the XXL 550.

- It still uses USB 1.1 instead of 2.0. I backed up everything to my computer as soon as I connected the device, and that process took almost 40 minutes (1.82GB of data, with 620KB/s average speeds). It's truly unfortunate to be in 2010 and see this kind of outdated technology still implemented in new devices.

- Audio instructions are VERY loud. Louder than Garmin 1350, in fact (a good thing). I didn't have any trouble hearing them over my car's loud engine and moderate radio volume. Street name pronunciations are also very clear.

- I know some people have issues with the EasyPort mounting system, but I didn't encounter any. It's a very simple "hold and rotate"
process. The unit stays in place even during bumpy rides. I find both the Garmin and TomTom mounts adequate.

UPDATE: After a few uses the EasyPort suction cup stopped holding. The slightest bump causes the unit to fall down. However, it can be fixed by pouring some water over the suction cup just before attaching it to the windshield. It becomes so attached to the window when you do this, that it's actually hard to detach. :p

- Battery life is around 4 hours (3 hours 50 minutes to be precise on Day mode). This was after activating the "Dim screen between instructions" function (automatically lowers the brightness to a minimum when it isn't giving you any new instructions, like in the middle of a long highway stretch, and increases to full brightness for about a minute before and after each instruction). This option is, of course, only possible when using the Full menu. With EasyMenu it stays at full brightness all the time, and that is bound to shorten battery life. Yep, another good reason to switch to Full menu. ;)

Again, read the comments section of this review for instructions on how to enable the Full Menu.

I am very happy with the Magellan RoadMate 1440, it's just such a good GPS Navigator with all the bells and whistles!

The 1440 is very accurate at saving you time during trips, you can set it up to give you the fastest route or the shortest distance to your destination, which in many cases, is not the same route.

The highway lane assist is one of those features that you might not think you need until you start dealing with lower end GPS units that don't offer such features. Take it from a guy who used to own a tomtom One 3rd edition! This feature helps you make sure that you are choosing the correct lane to exit during a freeway interchange. You'll be glad you have this feature, trust me!

Just in case you were wondering, this unit is also compatible with the "Magellan Traffic Link" (sold Separately) which gives you FREE real time traffic alerts in exchange for small banner ads such as "AM/PM too much good stuff!" displayed on the top of your screen. a small price to pay for such a great service! In case of a traffic jam, a small timer will appear right next to the traffic warning sign, which tells you how many minutes it estimates you will be stuck in there. Click on the warning sign and it will give you a second route to follow. It will compare both routes for you and give you an estimated arrival time for each one. At this point you can opt to avoid traffic or deal with it. This is one of the best features of this unit and a must have for people who have to deal with hours of traffic on a daily basis! (yes, I live in California and traffic jams are a part of my life)

I purposely "got lost" many times to test how accurate the unit was. I would assign a "point of interest" and make the wrong turns just to see how long it would take it to catch up to me, let me tell you it's fast! in most cases it will have a new route to follow before I even hit the next intersection.

It comes with TTS (text to speech) which means it actually tells you to "turn right on Magnolia" as opposed to "turn right in 30 feet", this is a nice feature to have, but it was a must have feature for me, since my previous unit didn't have it.

One odd thing about the 1440 is that when you save a new address to your address book, it automatically assigns it to "Home" in many cases I was trying to add a place of business and it didn't give me the option to do so, it has the "Business" space but you need to add a home address before it lets you add the business address, so everytime I click on "work" it shows me a little picture of a house as opposed to a picture of a building. Nothing big really, I'm sure they can fix that with a firmware update.1440 vs 1470

I also tested this unit against it's bigger brother, the Magellan RoadMate 1470 displaying a 4.7" screen. If you are like me and are looking at this item, you probably have been switching screens between this one and the 1470!

Looks: The 1440 seems to be a little thicker than the 1470, not a big difference, really. The 1470 feels smoother and it has rounded edges as opposed to the square look on the 1440. The back on the 1470 is silver, the back on the 1440 is black.Display: The 1470 screen has richer colors than the 1440, at their higher settings, the 1470 is just a little brighter than the 1440, still the 1440 screen is just as bright as you need a GPS screen to be.

Response time: I tested them in situations such turning them on/off, missing my turns to see how fast it would relocate, assigning destinations and looking up Points of Interests, The 1440 responded from 1-3 seconds faster than the 1470 model. Might not seem like much of a difference, but when you're on the road, just a few seconds might make you miss your exit!

Features: they both have the exact same features, nothing different here.

Sound: The 1440 has a slight louder speaker than the 1470. Both units are great, differences were very minimal. This choice is mostly determined on how big you want the screen and how much you are willing to pay for the difference.

I hope that this review helps you make a better buying choice!

TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) Review

TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler 5 inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The GPS market has come a long way in the past few years. A decade ago, there were very few after-market GPS units, they were mostly expensive, and they were also mostly mediocre. The best units cost more than a thousand, and while they'd get you from here to there, didn't feature a lot of bells and whistles. Factory installed GPS units--then limited mostly to high end cars--generally cost $2-3k.

A growing number of portable GPS units have come to market in the past 5 or so years. Over time, the hardware has improved, the software has (for the best ones) gotten pretty good, and prices have (especially in the past year or so) dropped tremendously. (That last point--the tremendous drop in price--has forced many manufacturers out of the market. At this point, it is mostly dominated by names like TomTom, Magellan, and Garmin). There is also now competition from high end smart phones, most of which have a GPS unit built in.

(Amazingly--or perhaps not--the cost of factory installed car GPS systems has stubbornly remained around $2,000!)

While there has been substantial brand attrition in the GPS market, there is no shortage of choices. That's because each manufacturer now offers an almost ridiculous number of models, many of which are only modestly different.

GPS units can basically be differentiated as follows

1) Screen size (usually 3-5" diagonally)
2) Ability to acquire a GPS signal
3) The GUI (graphical user interface) presented to the user
4) Quality of the maps (how often updated, what geographical regions they cover)
5) Does the unit incorporate traffic data?
6) Quality of routing (how good are the driving instructions generated)
7) Does the unit offer text to speech? (Does it tell you the names of streets, or just say "next left"?)
8) Does the unit offer voice recognition
9) Does the unit incorporate blue tooth to communicate with your phone and/or FM transmission to play over your car radio?
10) Does the unit have expandable memory; play mp3s; etc?
11) How good is the included mounting hardware?

Let's take these features one at a time for this particular GPS, the TomTom XXL540TM

1) The screen size of this unit is 5". This is at the high end of current offerings by the major GPS manufacturers. This doesn't really buy you any additional "real estate", i.e. the resolution isn't higher than the small GPS units. It's just a little bigger. That IS useful, to be honest, and is also helpful as it makes it easier to maneuver the touchscreen menus.

2) This unit, like all the current TomTom line, does a great job of acquiring a GPS signal. It can take far less than a minute with clear lines of sight, and my unit was even able to pull up 5 satellites inside my home with the blinds drawn. I also have GPS units from Sony and Garmin, as well as a built in unit in my car. The TomTom is better than the Sony at getting a signal, as good as the Garmin, and slower than the built in in my car (not a fair comparison, since the built in gets a much larger antenna).

3) This TomTom has a very good GUI. The touch screen is reasonably responsive and most everything appears where one would, intuitively, expect it to be. My biggest complaint is that there are a LOT of options and option screens you can drill through--way too many to deal with while driving. The upside, is there is a "simple menus" options that will present only the most significant option screens. It should be noted that some of the recent TomTom models (e.g. the 550) have eliminated a lot of the options/option screens, leaving ONLY the "simple" menus. That is a big negative, since some of these deep menus are quite useful. Bottom line: Good GUI and stick to a model like this that at least gives you the option of the deep menus.

4) The map data is good, and this particular GPS comes with lifetime map updates. TomTom also has a "map share" facility, which allows users to upload/download map changes. That means if a bunch of users discovery that a street is closed, they can note this information on their GPS and that info will get transmitted back to TomTom, who then shares it with everyone else. In this way, maps get corrected very quickly. This unit includes maps for both North America (US/Mexico/Canada) and much of Europe. The inclusion of European maps will be considered a major bonus for some, and irrelevant for those who don't plan to take this outside this continent.

5) This unit includes lifetime traffic data. The value of this data will depend on where you live. Major cities have great coverage. Smaller cities frequently get poorer coverage. The traffic data is also sometimes incorrect. But on the whole, the traffic data is good, and reasonably reliable (where you can get it). It is transmitted over the FM frequency, and an antenna is built into the auto power adapter cord that comes with this unit. The REAL value of the traffic data is that the unit incorporates the data when calculating routing information. I was skeptical at first, but have been VERY surprised at how well the unit picks the "right" route (not just the route that is shortest in land miles, or shortest based on posted speed limits). This is an A++ feature.

6) The quality of the routing with this unit is OUTSTANDING. Everything else aside, this is, in my opinion, where this unit really shines. They use what they call "IQ Technology" for routing. This is just putting a brand name on the following process: Incorporating frequently updated information on the real speed of various roads (and current traffic information) when generating routing information. It works beautifully. I tried several routes I frequently drive, where the real-world best route would NEVER be predicted on the basis of land miles or on the basis of posted road speeds. No other GPS I have used has ever predicted the real-world best routes--that includes a last generation Magellan unit, a last generation Sony unit (updated with their most recent firmware), and the unit installed in my car (also updated). In one case, the TomTom came up with a very good route, but not quite the best one. I went to the menus and indicated I wanted to avoid a certain road. The TomTom recalculated and subsequently came up with the correct (and not obvious) route. On the basis of their routing, I am a TomTom believer.

It's worth adding that this unit also includes "lane guidance", which is extra information about what lane in a multi-lane road/highway you should be in to prepare for your next road change. This feature is included in the higher end units in pretty much all the manufacturer's lines, and as with the others, it works very well here. I find this to be a very useful feature and would gladly pay to move up in a product line to get it.

7) This TomTom unit features text to speech. I find this a good feature, though obviously you can glance at the LCD screen to get the same info on a unit that does feature this feature. The TomTom is very good at pronouncing names that you might expect would present a problem (e.g. names derived from Spanish, or those derived from the names of Native American Indian tribes).

8) This unit does NOT include voice recognition. Although I would consider good quality voice recognition to be a MAJOR advantage, my experience is that the voice recognition on most portable GPS units is poor/worthless. Some of the high end Garmin units feature reasonable voice recognition, but they are expensive and the feature is still, to some extent, a work in progress.

9) This unit does not offer blue tooth connectivity to your cell phone, nor FM transmission through your radio system. To be honest, while these features sound good on paper, the ONLY blue tooth systems I have used that have ever been worth consideration are those factory installed into a car (at a cost of...$2000, or so...) When blue tooth is available on these portable units, it's mostly bad, and frequently horrible. So the lack of blue tooth on this GPS is no loss.

10) This unit does not have an external memory slot, and the memory cannot be expanded. Full loaded with both North American and European maps, this device uses about 3.7Gb of the 4Gb that are built in. But you can easily remove the maps for either North America or Europe in standard use, if you need more space in the future. The lack of external memory means you also won't be using this unit for playing music or videos or whatever. Again, this is no loss in my opinion. Few people use these features even when they are included.

11) The included mounting hardware is, sorry to say, very poor. The design--where the mounting bracket folds to nearly flush with the unit when not in use--is quite cute. Unfortunately, A) the suction device doesn't work very well and loses suction fairly quickly, even when applied to a good, clear, level surface. (When that happens, your GPS comes crashing to the floor!); B) the quick release bracket that allows the GPS to be removed from the mounting bracket is poor, and if you try to adjust the direction of the GPS, it comes off too easily; and C) even if A & B were not true, the included bracket allows only a very limited amount of motion--not enough to really adjust the GPS to the angle and direction you'd want (and certainly not enough to be usable with the increasingly popular "beanbag" dash mounts...) I would STRONGLY recommend that you buy a high quality after-market mount system made for this device, specifically this one: ARKON TTEP115 TomTom EasyPort Windshield / Dash Mount. At the time of writing this review, it's about thirteen dollars from Amazon, and worth every penny. It works great with this...Read more›

TomTom XXL 540TM 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) Review

TomTom XXL 540TM 5 inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
History with GPS Navigation:
I've used built-in Honda (Alpine), standalone Garmin, and Ford 'Sync' audio GPS navigation devices.
I loved the Honda navi for its size, and I hated it because updates were sparse and expensive.
I loved the Garmin for being up-to-date but I hated it because it always seemed to change its mind a lot, or direct me into strange areas.
I didn't really care for the Ford Sync navigation, as it wasn't a visual navi.Included for free with the car, but I choose not to use it. Maybe only good as a 'back-up' in case the TomTom fails-- though I don't think it ever will.

I sold my Honda and needed a new navigation system.

I bought the XXL 540TM for...
1) Screen size
2) Frequent map updates (4x a year + Map Share)
3) Ability to customize it (lots of settings to play with)
4) Well Known & Quality (I've always heard 'Garmin' is the best, but when I've tried Garmin, I didn't like it!)
5) Lane Guidance
6) IQ Routes (figuring out which roads were best to use)

By the way, in case you were wondering the "TM" stands for "Traffic" and "Maps", indicating there are free traffic and map updates. I had NO problems entering the "Lifetime Maps & Traffic" code provided.

What's in the box:
-> GPS device itself
-> Window mount (with suction cup)
-> Dashboard 'sticky' pad
-> USB cable (to connect to PC)
-> Car Power adapter
-> Set Up Guide
-> Slip of paper with 1 code, valid for Lifetime Map/Traffic updates

The first thing I did was hook it up to my PC and run all the updates. (A newer map was available + GPSFix + Map Share.)It took about 1.5 hours to update all of it. After it was done, it took up about 96% of the 2GB built-in memory. (I didn't check how much it used before updating.)Not a lot of 'wiggle room' to add more features. No built-in SD slot to add memory, either.

One major downside is that I don't like how easily the device 'pops off' the windshield mount. (See further explanation under "The BAD" below.) I am considering getting a (non-adhesive) weighted/padded mount to put on the dashboard.

The GOOD:
+ Screen size met my expectations. Easy to see everything on the screen

+ Startup time (including time to lock onto satellites) seemed fairly quick

+ Roads were up-to-date and labeled properly. Didn't find any errors

+ Allowed me to customize just about everything I wanted to.

+ It functioned perfectly as a Navigation device. This is where I felt Garmin was lacking. With all the features a Garmin has, it never seemed to 'navigate' the way I liked. Of all the features, the 'Navigation' is the most important, and TomTom does it well from what I've seen.

+ It pronounced some 'hard to say' roads perfectly! I'm sure I'll find some that are not right, but Garmin/Sync had a hard time saying road names.

The "OK":
+- Traffic is only updated by RDS (sent by local FM radio stations). This is what I paid for. RDS updated only major roadways (Interstates) and marked some accidents / road construction / road closures. It only worked when the power cord was plugged into the accessory power port on the car (as the cord functions as the antenna.)I would have preferred TomTom's GO/Live line of products which has a built-in 'cell phone' to grab more detailed and current traffic information. But, these were out of my price range. The XXL 740TM does "just enough" traffic to make it useful.

+- It takes some time to calculate a long distance route. But, I also know that it is using IQ Routes to choose the best roads. It seemed 1 or 2 seconds longer than it needed to be, but certainly not a huge problem.

The BAD:
- Internal memory not expandable. 96% used up without any 'extras' installed? Hope I don't need more...

- When browsing maps (dragging my finger) it is a bit 'laggy'. I don't expect perfection, but it seemed sluggish.Fortunately, I don't plan to browse maps often, so I'll deal with it.I tried turning off Points Of Interest (POIs), and turning off 3D maps (using 2D maps instead), and it really didn't seem to make a difference.I'm impressed with the detail it showed, but wasn't thrilled about waiting 10 seconds for the entire screen to finish 'drawing'.

- Windshield mount seemed to 'pop off' too easily. When suctioned to the windshield, I have to use 2 hands to 'hold' the GPS and keep it attached to the mount while I adjust.I suppose it is useful for people who leave the mount stuck on the windshield.I prefer to remove the device AND the mount and hide them when not in use. (I figure a thief will know that the mount is for a GPS, and that the GPS is hidden in the car somewhere.)I have yet to try this out on a LONG or COMPLEX road trip, but I have no doubts from what I've seen so far that it will be just fine.

OVERALL, I'm happy with the device.Happier than I was with Sync, Alpine, or Garmin. I consider myself an 'Average' navigation user (not a beginner, not an expert) and will update the review after using it more.

Sidenote: I ordered through Amazon, using "Beach Camera" seller. It was delivered ONE (1) business day after I ordered it! I used 'Standard' shipping, and FedEx (Home service) had it delivered fast. Very pleased with Beach Camera's shipping emails and speed!

TomTom XXL 540M 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Maps Edition) Review

TomTom XXL 540M 5 inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I just got this unit, I am very impressed! It's very quick starting up, very quick in determining my location and seems to be very accurate in terms of exits, roads, etc.My only disappointment is that the "lifetime" map feature is based on the "useful lifetime" of the device and TomTom reserves the right to determine what the useful life is and can withdraw support for it whenever they choose to.That significantly reduces the value of the "lifetime" map offer, but for an extra $30, it's probably still worth it, assuming they don't stop supporting it within a year!
