TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3 inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

I have this and used side by side with a Garmin 200 W for several weeks before returning the Garmin. Overall this is a good product but a few annoying bugs keep it from being great...here are the pros and cons

Pros

It finds the satellites quickly and keeps the signal. The garmin took 2-3 minutes almost every time from a power up start (this was the deal killer)

The user interface is nicer and has a lot more options than the garmin.

The POI database (such as the POI categories it actually has - it is missing several major US retail chains - see below) is more up to date than the Garmin I bought at same time.

Allows you to set the keyboard to QWERTY mode which the Garmin did not.cons

The graphics are a bit grainy compared to the garmin

The bluetooth is useless, works only for data transmission/reception and that too with very limited number of phones. No, you cannot use it as a handsfree.

If you take a wrong turn or pass by your destination or do anything to pass by your destination on a 2 lane road, it will not tell you to turn around - it will navigate you through the next set of intersections. In rural areas this can mean a 20 mile trip instead of going back 200 yards.

The text to speech works very unpredictably - it pronounces somename very nicely but mangles others horribly such that you can't recogonize it.

Also it announces street names about a quarter mile before and then simply says turn left or right when you are actually at an intersection and want the street name to turn into. This is annoying. Very annoying.

There is an SD card slot. However the unit works either exclusively with the SD card slot or with the internal memory. Which means that you have to reload everything in internal memory onto the SD card which takes about an hour because of the incredibly s-l-o-w data transfer rates.

Also the internal memory is pretty much full so forget about any upgrades unless you spring for at least a 2 GB or more SD card

Strangely, TomTom doesn't know about major US retail chains like Toys R Us, Payless Shoes etc. This even after I updated the unit with the US Retail POI database file

The color schemes available on the unit and online are completely weird. Seems to have been done by people with zero taste and sensiblity.

The internal battery is useless in cold weather (i.e. if you leave the unit in the car in winter). This after a few weeks. It either dies in a few minutes or doesn't fire up at all. Will have to see how it performs in the summer.

The brightness and contrast are so-so in daylight compared to the garmin 200 w

While it does not have the same array of luxury features as TomTom's GO 720 or GO 920 line, the ONE XL-S offers all the features you need in a solid navigation system (see a feature comparison for all of TomTom's GO and ONE devices).
What's New -- Text To Speech
The ONE XL-S has all the features of the ONE XL, but also adds text-to speech, which allows the device to give spoken directions with real street names. MapShare lets you add your own map corrections and POIs, then share them with the entire TomTom user community via the TomTom HOME website

What's New -- Map Share
The ONE XL-S includes TomTom's innovative new Map Share technology. Map Share enables users to make easy changes to the map and to share map corrections with other TomTom customers so that users always have the most up-to-date maps available

Map Coverage
Like TomTom's other navigators, the ONE XL-S comes pre-loaded with complete maps for all fifty of the United States, as well as Canada, based on TeleAtlas map data and all stored on 1 GB of internal memory
See More
But it's not just the broad geographical coverage that makes the TomTom ONE XL-S special. The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 4.3 inches, the TFT display offers an expanded widescreen view of brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics.

The device also features 32 MB RAM and 266 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest. Memory expansion is made possible by an SD card slot.

The ONE XL-S provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are issued at a speed-sensitive volume, so as your vehicle's engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening. And because voice instructions are available in over 30 languages, just about anyone will find the TomTom ONE XL-S to be an invaluable system.

With its touch-sensitive screen, the TomTom ONE XL-S puts programming and operation literally at your fingertips to make sophisticated technology simple. The built-in database offers thousands of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. The ONE XL-S will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the ONE XL-S lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. Other display features include a compass mode to assist you with directional orientation, and an anti-glare screen for optimal viewing even in direct sunlight.

The 4.3-inch (diagonal) 3D driving view offers a clear picture of the road and maneuvers ahead (actual size).
For additional navigational features to assist with trip planning, the built-in Bluetooth connection provides access to TomTom PLUS subscription-based services, so that you can tune in to the latest traffic and weather conditions, as well as download additional city maps, voices, points of interest, and much more. The ONE XL-S adds to these capabilities with FM radio-based RDS-TMC traffic information as an available accessory (not included).

Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 3.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches, the TomTom ONE XL-S can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom ONE XL-S is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle's cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.

TomTom XL 330S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

TomTom XL 330S 4.3 inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit refurbished as indicated.I was worried about the possibility of it not coming with the most recent map updates (see the reviews for the TomTom ONE XL-S refurbished unit), but I went ahead and bought it anyway since I was being frugal. The GPS came packaged nicely and did not have any blemishes or anything on it.I used it for the first time on a several day trip to Phoenix, where I really got to experience the functionality of the device.

Some good points:
-- the 4.3" screen is nice, and I would recommend this screen size over the 3.5" models.
-- the set-up is relatively easy (which was great since the instruction manual is a joke!).
-- TomTom has a pretty cool website (TomTom HOME) for you to use to get necessary updates your GPS, download accessories, etc. Some bad points"
-- the instruction manual is a joke.Thankfully, I had a vague sense of what to do because I'd used a GPS once before.
-- the car adapter plugs in to the bottom of the unit in a way that is a bit unwieldy and awkward.
-- you can only get the street names spoken with the computer-generated voice. If you chose any of the more human-sounding voices, the street name function will not work.
-- whenever you download a new map or map update, you lose your saved favorites. You have to manually re-enter them or save the file from before you updated.
-- it took forever for me to figure out how to cancel a destination once I was already en-route.Since there is no help in the instruction manual, I just had to start pressing areas of the screen to get the device to take me to the right menu screen!

-- AND VERY IMPORTANTLY:The unit I received came with a map that was 4 quarters (i.e., one year) old. This was a risk based on some other reviews, even though the product description said the device comes with the most updated map or comes with the latest map guarantee. So, I read up on the other TomTom refurb units that Amazon sells, and people were saying that it was relatively easy to get TomTom to give you an updated map.So, I called the customer service line and talked to a rep.He said that I needed the map guarantee certificate that came in the box, but I did not receive one. (FYI: some reviewers of the refurbished TomTom ONE XL-S unit said they got this in the box along with their GPS).Since I didn't have a certificate, the rep said it was unlikely I would get a new map. However, I was determined to get my update, so I pressed a bit further. The rep said maybe I could just send in my proof of purchase (Amazon receipt) and we'll see what happens. (You can fax it or send it as an attachment through a website.) I did that, and lo and behold, I got an email message the NEXT DAY saying that my map update had been uploaded to my TomTom HOME account.I downloaded it the next day without any problems. So, despite the reluctance of the customer service rep, I got my new map!

Overall, the unit works well, though the spoken street names can be bit hard to understand at times. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could.

Important Product Information

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like-new conditions. Some refurbished GPS devices might contain cosmetic blemishes. There is a six-month guarantee on parts and labor on TomTom refurbished products.

QuickGPSfix

Starting up can seem like a slow business, particularly if you're in a hurry, because the GPS receiver needs to know exactly where each GPS satellite is to calculate your location. But satellites only broadcast their positions once every 30 seconds. So if any of their signals are interrupted--for example, by passing high buildings--the whole position-fixing process has to repeat itself again and again until the perfect fix is achieved. QuickGPSfix takes a smarter approach.

QuickGPSfix can speed up the time it takes to fix your GPS position by downloading the latest satellite data via an Internet connection. Just connect your TomTom device to your computer, and TomTom HOME automatically downloads "QuickGPSfix"--a special GPS data file that helps your TomTom fix your position quicker, even when the GPS signal is weak or partially blocked.

This unique, free service--which comes as standard with the GO (920/720/520/910/710/510) and ONE (XL/New Edition)--helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever.

On the road or no access to TomTom HOME?
Get the same "QuickGPSfix" data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection (GO 920/720/520/910/710/510 and ONE XL/3RD EDITION and 2nd Edition). As soon as a connection is established, the "QuickGPSfix" data is automatically updated.

Note: QuickGPSfix data has limited validity. So to keep on getting a faster position-fix, re-connect your device at least once a week.

To minimize the amount of data sent over your wireless data connection, this automatic update is only carried out if the data on your device is over 5 days old. The associated data usage of this service is less than 10 Kb per connection. Please contact your mobile service provider to determine the exact costs. To disable this automatic update, just select ‘Disable Auto QuickGPSfix' on your TomTom device.

Fun Extras to Personalize Your TomTom

New smart and fun extras to personalize users' devices:

    record driving instructions in your own voice;
    buy fun voices from TomTom;
    exchange files (of photos, songs, HTML documents, etc.) between your GO and any other Bluetooth-enabled device (laptop, phone, other TomToms);
    select a favorite car icon on the screen;
    load, store, and preview photos from your digital camera; and
    enjoy music with the built-in MP3 player (earphones connector available via an optional SD card).

TomTom Traffic

With an optional RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver accessory, you can get traffic information from the RDS-TMC Traffic service, which is delivered over unused FM radio channels.
Traffic information is fully integrated into the TomTom navigation experience.
The RDS-TMC receiver is available as an accessory for the GO 930/730/530, 920/720/520, 910/710/510, ONE 3rd edition, ONE XL, ONE (30 series) and XL (30 series).

The RDS-TMC receiver accessory comes with a 1-year free subscription to the TMC traffic service.

With some TomTom models, an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is included in the box. This is indicated by the addition of "T" or "Traffic" to the model name. An example is "ONE Traffic".
.

TomTom ONE USB Battery Charger Review

TomTom ONE USB Battery Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I got my Tom Tom One, there was a quick start guide that was to say the least inadequite. One of the things they left out was the fact that you can charge your Tom Tom using the USB cable connected to your computer.Insted they have a stern warning in their quick start guide suggesting you spend 30 bucks more to buy the Charger. The Charger works fine, but I don't think much of Tom Tom's business ethics in not including detailed information about their product when the consumer purchases it so you don't end up spending money on things you really don't need. For that reason, I wouldn't give Tom Tom any stars.
